This video shows you how to add rusty and dry dusty patches to your modelling subjects. The effects shown in this video enhance the look and detail of the Hornby Railroad Class 08 Diesel.

I was doing this on Scalextric slot racing cars back in the 70’s using matt varnish and brown paint!

You could you DW40 to free up your wheels. Are the pickups clean and free of powder?

Thanks, but how do you do this if you painted your kit model in humbrol acrylics first? I don't think you can paint enamels over the top???

This depends on the finish you wish to achieve. you can apply Weathering Powders using Humbrol Enamel Thinners, however this wont give you the same effect.

I'll do this on a metal gauge-measuring item and a signal as soon as I get the varnishes and powders, and see if that works first, then I'll try my 8F loco. :)

I used Hobby Spray Varnish by Humbrol for Acrylic Paint and Hobby Spray, can this be used as well because i either spray it too close and it gets rid of the powders or slightly further away and it doesn't stick, no matter how close or far it doesn't work. Do i need different spray?

How did you stop the wheels from sticking when you run your loco's? I have used the spray on my bachmann class 08 and wheels are sticking causing the loco to stutter and stop completely

Unfortunately Hornby are unable to weather their locos for production in this way due to the processes involved.

1 - 2 hours in total. But take your time and ensure all of the running gear is kept clean.

We would advise to mask the windows before applying any varnish.

But then you would still need to apply the sealer at the end on the connecting rods. So it ends up being quicker and eaisier to leave the body on.

But this way is more fun and also more of an experience to do, and in some casses cheaper or suits the needs for some people better than an air brush. Although airbrushing can look better, i personally prefer this method of weathering. Plus i am 12 and accessing and using weathering powders would be much easier for me, than if i were to use an air brush. (Especially when i live only a 5 minute walk away from a model store that sells these weathering powders.
