Will it ever run again? Today I'm attempting to repair an old Hornby Class 47!

If you saw last weeks video where I took a look at some vintage and retro model railway locos, you'll know that most of them performed very well aside from the Class 47 which was a non runner. As the old Hornby locos are fairly simple I figured I'd have a go at repairing the Class 47 myself... can I get it to run again? You'll have to watch to the end to find out!
Chapters:

08:16 - Reassembling The Class 47

That was great, it goes to show you that a good clean and a service on a loco really does help, well done for getting the 47 running again 😀

I really love the simplicity and ease of servicing ringfield motors. Certainly don't make it as easy to service locomotives these days. One thing I'd recommend when servicing ringfields, take out the wheels that connect to the gears on the motor and spray some contact cleaner down the holes the axles go through and give them a clean with a pipe cleaner or something similar. Cheers

Cool, that’s good to knows I’ll keep that in mind for the future if I service anymore of these motors. Thanks for watching 😃

Now aged 52 I serviced all of my Hornby trains from my childhood last year.All of them are now running perfectly after replacing motors and brushes.As you said the key is clean contacts and that Is what you don't know about when your a child.I remember trying to fix them ! Good video , keep them all coming.RRD

Enjoyable video. Thanks! I'm guessing a cross-connected wire from the pick-ups on the non powered bogie causing a short circuit was the key issue preventing running. Disconnecting those wires and applying power direct to the connections on the motor is the best way to tell, if you don't have a meter.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 8 ай бұрын
No it literally just needed a really good clean all over. It was showing brief signs of life initially but just not enough to get it running. If it had been a short circuit the controller would have cut out and in some ways it would have been an easier problem to diagnose. Thanks for watching 😃

Repair videos are very much of interest, the problem with some of them is the way things are described/spoken one in particular puts my little boy to sleep but yours was very different and the way you present your videos is better than most too

I wonder if those rear pick ups were crossed wired or perhaps they were just very dirty. Lovely to see an old loco brought back to life. 🙂
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

I don’t think so otherwise it would have shorted out the controller. I think it was all just really dirty having been sat in a box for several years. Thanks for watching 😃

It’s a beauty for nothing more than the Colour which simply Hornby can not come close to recreating. What I did and briefly mentioned on my channel was TUT TUT nabbed the headhsell and slipped it onto a new chassis. Mmm yes captain Dremmel had to make a few modifications but on a 70’s series Hornby we can be safe in thinking the warranty may have expired. I’m not a big one on weathering the locos I love seeing them straight out of the Hornby 1980 catalogue as I frequently keep cross referencing in my vids. Always well produced content keep it going.

Cool, yeah I think one of the good things about these older models is that they are great for projects where you want to do something drastic. Cutting up a brand new super detail mode on the other hand takes a bit more nerve 😆 Thanks for watching 👍

Well, that proved to be a worthwhile exercise! 😎 I did wonder if maybe the intermittent twitching was something to do with the magnets not being full strength but twitching tends to be where a connection is momentarily lost rather than a consistent under powering 🤔 Might be worth just testing the motor directly with power just to make sure it’s not a family with the flow of electricity between the wire and the brush 🤷🏻‍♂️ Lovely old model though. Glad to see it running 🤓👍🍀🍻

It's amazing how much of a difference giving everything a very quick clean and service can make and in this instance it's got a non-working loco running again. I'm sure if I wanted to go really in-depth with it there's all sorts of things I could do to get it working even better but I figured giving it a quick service was nice and simple. Thanks for watching 😃

I have allways wondered if i should use oil on the axles or not, my thinking is the oil would be a insulator and stop the engine from running.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s what I thought too. It’s tempting to do because you want the wheels to turn freely but I think you’re right in that the oil would act as an insulator. It may well be that’s why this loco wasn’t working in the first place because it had been over oiled. Thanks for watching 😃
