Agreed, but what about convergent civilizations? Is it possible for civilizations to convert to somewhat of the same path? I mean they to have to obey the same laws of physics, and in away have to event almost the same technology as us if they want to survive, or become space fairing species. Like we about to become next year, or 2021-2030, or 2021-2100.( Being 2030, and 2100 years that we have solar system colonies, and possibly by 2200-2400 we could be considered as a galactic species.) And surviving for a intelligent species is in a way to tame your own species, as you tame the world. Then you have building fires for the winter, man made caves ( if you think about it a house, or a hut is a cave), weapons for defending, and attacking. Then you have farming to sustain a growing population, ways to deal with diseases, and ways to contact, and control all of your territories. So I believe convergent civilizations could exist out there. Don't you?

@@igkslife C.S. Lewis wrote a story about a man who was kidnapped and taken to another planet (which later turned out to be Mars). When he first sees a native, he is stricken by the fact that the boat looks so much like an Earth-boat. Only later does he realize there are only a few ways to make a boat, and most of them have probably been built on earth.

Looking up these moths (which is surprisingly hard) they are apparently fairly closely related to the hummingbird Moths of the Americas within the larger clade Sphingidae which all share the same hovering capability, build and feeding habits so the moths aren't an instance of convergent evolution but it is remarkable how birds and moths could converge on the same adaptations regardless of that.

tomato hornworm is hawkmoth larvae - tomato hornworm covered in little silk pellets are under attack from parasites - killing both on tomato plants only saves your tomatoes for a short time but adversely affects the insects' populations for much longer - and thus affects the animals that feed on them. Solution - grow more tomato plants than you need and move hawkmoth larvae off your desired plants to the extras you've grown.

In my school days 50 years ago, I believed that butterflies went about in daytime while moths flew in the night. So, I was fascinated when I found these moths flying among the flowers along with butterflies & bees, behaving like tiny little green, blue & yellow-grey hummingbirds. They had the agility of dragonflies but looked like "little flying fish". So with much difficulty I managed to kill 2 or 3 and inspected them, just to make sure that they were not birds or fish, but really moths! It was fascinating. At that time I thought that they were some unknown species peculiar to south India. That was long long ago. Now thanks to this video, I know what they really are and where they come from.

@@thefloridamanofytcomments5264 Yes but Florida is known for being if not the most invasive species state in the US. They got everything living down their! Lol

@@thefloridamanofytcomments5264 That is for a particular kind of hummingbird moths. There are many other hummingbird moths throughout the world. The adults of many plant pest caterpillars compete in hummingbird niche.

What you saw is not an invasive species. There are difference species of these guys around the world. We do have hummingbird moths that are native to the US. I live in Ohio, and in my pollinator garden I'll sometimes see the hummingbird clearwing moth, which goes by the scientific name "hemaris thysbe." It's a really pretty insect. I have mistaken it for a hummingbird.

I just filmed one of these while picking out flowers from the store. I uploaded the video on my channel. I had never heard of them until I saw it. The wings are even triangle shaped like a hummingbird. Fun fact, the moth on the face for Silence Of The Lambs is a Hawk moth.

I saw a hummingbird moth for the first time in the US about a year ago. It was incredible moment for me, I didn’t know such cheaters existed until that moment. They even fly and hover exactly like hummingbirds do. It would be like learning that the “fish” in an aquarium are actually fully aquatic lizards or something. It really filled me with wonder like I was a little kid again.

Technically mimicry is probably secondary as it seems possible perhaps even probable that the moths might have come first,or at the very least evolved isolated from hummingbirds for millions of years only recently arriving in the Americas. Since hummingbirds are only found in the Americas while these Moths are on every continent except Antarctica with their genetic diversity centered on the old world. As such it appears the linage as a whole likely originated in the old world so Hummingbirds couldn't have been a driving source of mimicry since their isn't any similar animal to mimic there.... The American migrants certainly do mimic hummingbirds but it might have just been a coincidence initially...

Seen one when I was fishing one day. Thought it was a hummingbird at first but upon closer inspection it was in fact an insect. It made the trip awesome! It was the western bee moth variant though.

There were many of these in Northern Ontario, Canada from 2007 to about 2009 and we never saw them since then. I initally thought they were hummingbirds, but then on closer inspection, it was clear that they were some sort of insect.

Had one of these show up to suckle on one of my flower bushes. It also had black and yellow coloration so it was like it was trying to mimic two things at once. It was surprisingly docile during feeding, enough for me to put my hand under it and just like humming birds, it's amazing how much these guys can distort the air around them. I could have probably used the little guy to dry my hands somewhat lol.

I couldn't help but notice that the map you showed doesn't show any hawk moths in the US. Twice in my life I have visited a high desert zone in the mountains of CA. I believe it was called Grant's Pass, at that time I was on the road every summer and went a lot of places in the US but mostly within CA. This area is a mountain pass, the desert area about 2 miles long and about a 300 yards across. It is typical desert, hot, dry, sand, cactus. I saw birds, black widow spiders, insects of all kinds and what I took at first to be hummingbirds. Then I realized they were moths. It was a gorgeous place.
