The study of animal communication challenges our ideas of intelligence and informs our search for life in the universe. Among the most fascinating of vocalizations are the songs and sounds of humpback whales.
By studying these loquacious creatures, Laurance Doyle of the SETI Institute aims to uncover the vast wellsprings of communications that exist throughout Planet Earth-and beyond.
This project is part of the Diverse Intelligences initiative and Templeton World Charity Foundation's Stories of Impact. Learn more at diverseintelligences.com

I have often thought that ocean mammals intelligence is so much superior to that of humans and that indeed, they can and do communicate a native knowing of galactical sounds; complex life forms, movements existing in the universe. I totally respect and love them.

Elaborate measuring of shannon entropy is old news for bottlenose dolphins and humpback whale songs with mixed results (dolphins may have a language, but it has to be far simpler than ours, and those male-only songs are whistled tunes, not ballads). The truth is that those other social vocalisations (other than their feeding calls) always looked far more promising than those earlier cases. It's about this obvious test was put to a large such dataset. Good luck, and I would love to hear more of this particular study.

How can I contact these? I am planning on shooting a documentary about freediving with humpbacks at Tonga next summer. Maybe we could help one another?

Guilherme Topper Are you sure? I’m asking, because as far as I know, Mr. Nestor is engaged in spermwhale vocalization research. We exchanged a couple of emails last year. The whales in the video are humpbacks.

so theyre trying to understand whales... how sad will it be when they find a whale that is slowly drowning and sending out its last calls. As it floats down, drowning, do its family/pod listen from above? One can only imagine, but one can be sure these beings know loss and family.

To be honest, I would tell them to stay away because humans are dangerous, believe me. Aliens would be shot on sight by the government or they would be tortured and taken an advantage of.
