Key insights 💰 Starting a Roth IRA early is crucial for maximizing potential contributions and building a larger stock portfolio. 💰 The Roth IRA allows for more aggressive investing to capture as much upside as possible, since gains within the account are tax-free. 💭 The lesson learned is that blindly following online methods for investment decisions may not always be the best approach, and it's important to tailor investment choices to one's specific circumstances and goals. 💰 "I'd rather take a shot at the most possible gains especially in a Roth IRA because all the gains that you're going to capture within that account are going to be tax-free at the end of the day." 💼 Understanding your own investing style and risk tolerance is crucial for building a personalized stock portfolio that aligns with your goals and preferences. 📚 Researching and understanding the different types of investment accounts available, such as custodial accounts for kids and self-employed plans, is crucial in determining the best option for individual needs. 💡 "If I could do it all over, I would probably aim to increase my saving and contribution rate to closer to 10 to 15 percent of my gross." 💰 Starting early and investing in a low-cost S&P 500 Index Fund can lead to better financial outcomes compared to the average in the United States.

Thanks for the great videos. I understand that it's important as one gets older to move their portfolio allocation gradually from more aggressive investments like stocks to more conservative investments like bonds. What is the strategy for doing such a gradual transition? Would it be just by contributing more to the conservative investments gradually or would it be selling off the more aggressive holdings and using the earnings to purchase more conservative holdings? Would love to get a video about this!

In my opinion, making a smart investment is not only a technique for earning passive income, but also a profitable way of saving for future expenses. People who fail to make the proper judgments early in life often come to regret it later in life. Nonetheless, investing alone can be difficult and risky. As a result, I recommend obtaining an expert’s assistance. The challenge is not just watching videos and reading investing books; it is about implementing information effectively.

I wholeheartedly concur, which is why I opt to entrust the day-to-day decision-making to an investing coach. With their specialized knowledge and extensive research, it is highly unlikely for them to underperform. Their expertise is centered around harnessing the asymmetrical potential of risks while also employing measures to safeguard against unfavorable outcomes. I have been collaborating with an investment coach for more than two years

Saving is great but investing puts you on a pedestal where you wouldnt have to worry about savings as you do now. Thanks to my FA, my portolio is doing really great and im proud of the decisions i made last year.

Nice. People often underestimate financial advisors' importance. Over 50 years of data reveal that those who work with advisors typically earn more than those who go it alone. @@jimshoesjust looked at the etf performance and it’s not always the same companies that carry the s&p 500 value. Trying to guess which sector inside voo is going to perform the best is the equivalent of individual stock picking, which statistically yields lower returns. Also buying into the stocks that have dropped in price is essentially “buying on discount” so if McDonald’s or coke saw a loss in one year, doesn’t mean they won’t regain that value long term, whereas value investors would say the already high priced stocks that yielded past returns are now intrinsically overpriced and will most likely face market corrections according to the “efficient market theory”

You will need a strong FA to help you through the current market turmoil. I've been talking to a coach named Dawn Maureen Humphrey for long now, mostly because I lack the knowledge and energy to deal with these ongoing market circumstances. I made more than $220K during this slump, demonstrating that there are more aspects of the market than the average individual is aware of. My mistake was investing in a Target Date fund in my 401k instead of just going Large Cap. Especially after the expense ratio for the TDF increased. They always say diversify but when you're young and have decades left to retire you should be as aggressive as you can. Also, not contributing enough to my companies after-tax option and later Roth 401k.

I still don't agree with retail investors holding individual stocks in retirement accounts even though you made some very fair points. It's all good if you have some money to play around with and you want to roll the dice but I feel like a Roth account should be a more tried and true portfolio like the 3 fund.

Hi Humphrey. Great video. I'm 27 years old and just like you, started investing right around age 26. I plan on maxing my Roth IRA every year (explicitly tracking FXAIX) My Roth 401k is currently a 2060 Target Date Fund. It's done great for me so far but judging how the other TDF's do the closer you get to retirement, I'm contemplating switching to a Large Cap Total Stock Index or US Stock Index (401k Doesn't offer FXAIX). The switch wouldn't happen for 8-10 years which is when I'm guessing the account will start to become a little more conservative for my liking. The new RMD laws make it seem even less risky to buy and hold index funds. Thoughts??!

The order of contribution I would suggest is: Maximize 401k match Maximize Roth IRA Maximize HSA The max your 401k if it’s Roth. Then your brokerage or traditional 401k if your company has great low cost funds. funds.
@ryebread447
@ryebread447 6 ай бұрын
Why hsa before 401?
@lizardmilk
@lizardmilk 5 ай бұрын
@@ryebread447 because you want to maximize your matching first. And most HSAs come with company matching. So that’s free money. Also, HSA is triple tax advantaged, unlike a 401k. So maximize your 401k match first to get that free money. Then maximize your Roth IRA. Roth IRA will not have the fees of a 401k. Then your HSA to get the HSA match. Then everything you can back into 401k Roth. All that above maximizes your tax advantages. Anything else you can afford then goes into brokerage or whatever other investment you prefer.

A Roth 401k is a Roth savings acct thru an employer retirement plan and it bypasses the wage income limits that a normal Roth would hold you to. But you could have/start/fund a normal Roth for many years and then get a job that has a Roth 401k plan and if you make more than the income limits you could do the Roth 401k instead of the regular one. But the federal limit you can contribute each year I believe is the same limit as the other one.

Hey Humphrey. Love your wonderfully informative videos. I'm starting my new job in 2 weeks. But I'm NOT that far away from "retirement" and I'm starting my first ROTH IRA. Is that fund protected, in case I get hit with huge health care bills in the next few years? Do I have to classify it as "retirement" fund and not touch it? Even after retirement age? Afraid if I get sick and health care costs demand I raid the account? I'm starting my ROTH IRA VERY late in life but I do NOT want to touch it! Thank you Humphrey.

Doesn't young and aggressive buying ETFs go against what Warren Buffet is saying? With ETFs, you are owning a lot of stocks. I'd say young and aggressive should be mostly individual companies?

I have a bit of a unique demand for my portfolio - I will be allocating a certain percentage to a fund for a bankroll for counting cards in blackjack. I travel all the time for my job and don't actually work that many hours (performance-based pay), so plenty of time to spend in casinos and then move if/when I get too much attention. Counting cards is not cheating, completely legal, and guarantees an edge over the house given the right rules, so with enough hours and a big enough bankroll, you can mathematically lock in some pretty crazy returns

Do people in the US get money from the government when they retire? In Finland we get a monthly pension that is proportional to how much money you made during your working life. Just wondering if all the talk about saving for retirement is about extra spending money or money you actually need to live.

We have social security that we pay into by way of taxes from wages. You can start drawing from it at age 62 but they penalize you if you draw at that age so you might only get around $1000 a month give or take a few hundred. If you wait until age 70 you get the full benefits. But the way our government spends money, there probably won't be any social security in 20-40 years.
@yia01
@yia01 Жыл бұрын
yea we pay into social security, 7.8% from us, and employer pay the other half, it usually come out to be about $1300 or more depend on much u put in. some employer will also have matching contribution 401k as well. so as a retire couple, u can get anywhere form $3000 or more monthly form social security, another $1000-$2000 montly from 401k ontop of ur other personal retirement account such as ira/rothira, taxable investment account and personal saving banking account.

@humphrey
@humphrey Жыл бұрын
Yeah I really like that. The traditional 3 fund portfolio is still good but it just has too much bond exposure for younger people (especially when bonds were not paying anything), but these days its a bit better and the modern 3 fund seems way better IMO (for certain younger people)

@sagesends

SCHD currently pays ~3.5% dividends and basically trades sideways. Most money markets/CDs/high yield savings pay 1-1.5% more than that. SCHD is not a great investment.

@@josephsaeteurn9158 judging from last too dividend should be about 3.5% by year end for dividend. for short term trade, tech is great at the moment cause of ai hype but unless u sell and take profit, it kind of pointless since all those gain will be gone once market correct again.
