Yay Green Peter! I was told this one when I was little. In the version my grandma told me, his sister was to be beheaded too if he failed. If he didn't fail, she was meant to marry the prince, princess' brother. The Rose is always a symbol of the Mother (virgin Mary) that's why the roses were brighter than the sun, holy light.
