Maybe the translation wasn't perfect like the title. The original title is 'A rókaszemű menyecske' (the bride is menyasszony in Hungarian) and in English: 'The fox-eyed little bride' (we have a tale about a star-eyed shepherd too). The fox part was right. The Fox Princess in Hungarian: 'A róka hercegnő'.

The Philippines also have similar folk tale called "Ibong Adarna". Ibon which means bird. It is so similar so here's a short summary: Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named, Berbania. It was ruled by King Fernando and Queen Valeriana who had three sons - Don Pedro (first born), Don Diego (second) and Don Juan (the youngest). One night, King Fernando had a bad dream. He saw that his youngest Prince and his favorite, Don Juan was thrown away in a creepy deep well. The King started to get weak for some unknown reasons. It seemed that nothing could bring back his healthy condition. His medical advisors told him that the only cure to his unexplained sickness is a lullaby sung by the Adarna bird. So King Fernando tasked his three sons to hunt the magical bird. Don Pedro went first but he wasn’t successful. He may have reached Mount Tabor and the tree of Piedras Platas where the Adarna bird nested but the prince fell asleep after hearing the bird’s song. Worse he turned into a stone when the lovely bird pooped on him. The second prince, Don Diego went to hunt next. Unfortunately, he had the same bitter chance like his older brother. The kingdom was counting on Don Juan, so he went next. The youngest prince has climbed through Mount Tabor. He met a very old sick man who gave him tips about the magical tree of Piedras Platas and catching the Adarna bird. Don Juan successfully caught the bird and helped his two brothers to be human again. Because of envy and greed of power, the two joined forces to beat Don Juan to death and throw him in a deep well. The two then returned home with the Adarna. However, the king’s illness went worse because the bird never sang a single song. Luckily, Don Juan’s strength returned. He has been healed by the poor old man he helped in the mountain. He came back to the Kingdom of Berbania. King Fernando has known the truth when the bird started singing after seeing Don Juan. The King went well and stronger than ever. He wanted to punish his two sons but Don Juan asked his father to just forgive them. The King granted his request and asked the three princes to guard the Adarna bird. Because of Don Pedro, the bird flew away and escaped. Don Juan went away from the kingdom so the king won’t punish his brother. King Fernando asked the two princes to look for Don Juan. They found him in the kingdom of Armenia. They decided to live there. One day they found an interesting well. Only Don Juan went down inside successfully. He found two lovely princesses, Donya Juana and Donya Leonora captive by a giant serpent. Because of his skills in fighting, the mighty prince has killed the serpent and saved the two princesses. Don Pedro envied the young prince. He cut the rope when the prince went down inside the well to get the ring Donya Leonora has forgotten. Anyway, it was easy for Don Diego to make Donya Juana to fall in love with him. So when they came back to Berbania, they married. On the other hand, Don Pedro did everything to pursue Donya Leonora but he failed. An enchanted fox helped Don Juan and he was quickly healed. The Adarna bird appeared suddenly and told him about the princess of Reyno delos Cristales, his love destiny. He immediately searched for the princess and found out about the cruel King Salermo. In spite of the obstacles the cruel king has given him, he faced them all and succeeded with the help of Maria Blanca, daughter of King Salermo. Because of the selfish king, the two tried to escape. Maria Blanca was cursed to be crawling like a snail and be forgotten by the prince Don Juan. Don Juan has returned to Berbania where he was welcomed by his mother, Queen Valeriana and Princess Leonora. He has forgotten about Maria Blanca because of Princess Leonora. Don Juan and Princess Leonora were scheduled to wed. At the day of the wedding, Maria Blanca visited wearing the emperatris. She tried to bring back all the memories and remind Don Juan about their love. Finally, Don Juan and Princess Maria Blanca got married while Princess Leonora married Don Pedro. In the end, Don Pedro became the new king of Berbania while Don Juan became the king of Reyno delos Cristales.

This story reminded me of a Filipino epic poem called "Ibong Adarna" or "The Adarna Bird". It has the same story beats (brothers turning to stone in their quest to find the bird, the youngest prince being virtuous of the 3 brothers except for that one time he abandoned his fiancee, youngest son killed because of his bride, etc) except without the fox and some major differences and additions. The story of the poem is also far longer. From what I remember, the poet's identity was not confirmed, though it is generally believed that they took inspiration from European stories and adapted them into a poem that would appeal to the Filipinos. However, some historians suggested that the story beats and concepts found in the epic poem predated Spanish occupation and that the poem was adapted to suit the tropes in European romances. Sorry for the rambling. I just find it interesting how it reminded me of the mandatory reading I did for junior high 😅

Interesting, in the version I heard as a kid the fox asked the prince for a favour in return for his help, the prince agreed and the fox asked him to cut off his head and chop off his paws and throw his body in the river. The prince said he couldn't hurt his friend but the fox reminded him he had promised. So the prince did it and the foxes body turned into a prince who was the brother of the princess that had been cursed.

The life restoring leaves are connected to another old story. A man steals a snakes leaves when he’s buried alive with his wife/princess when she dies (he promised when they married). But he uses the leaves so she’s revived and he gets out of being buried. Then the princess had her husband killed so that she could remarry. But his mates uses the leaves he treasures to bring him back and the princess meets a grim judicial fate when her father the king finds out. That could be the same snake that got his leaves stolen.

I think my favorite part about this story is the youngest brother's sheer lack of surprise at anything that happens. Fox can talk? Cool. Fox can shapeshift? Neat. Fox knows the exact bird you're speaking of, and where to find it? Convenient. Fox lets slip that he met his now missing brothers in the forest, and might know what happened to them? Ah well. Fox can teleport? That's handy. Fox straight up admits he cursed his brothers? Well, he fixed it now. 10/10 best protag

I heard a version of this tale where the “Prince” kept messing up on what the Fox told him to do. And yet the fox kept helping him. At the end of the story; after the princes had married him and all the trades had been made (there were a LOT more than just the Princess for the Prince’s life.) the Fox asked the prince to kill him. The prince wouldn’t do this for three days, until finally he gave in and killed the Fox. Then she turned into a beautiful maiden, saying she had been cursed and thanking the Prince for his help.

Clearly the fox is best Waifu. Pretty princess is happy with handsome kidnapper. Meanwhile Fox is the best og for staying with him, dedicated journeying for what may seem months to a foregin land, with a man he barely knew, to assist in a quest that did not involve him in the slightest, stayed patient with him as he accidently did an "Ooopsie", TRAVLED WITH HIM FURTHER to a whole NEW lsland/country to participate in kidnapping, just to wingman him into a relationship, did a big sacrifice by getting married to a dude, and then FINALLY, after all that, performed what would be a serious high ranking Necromancy spell to bring back this guy from the land of the dead.... ......all because he showed kindness and shared food with him. But you know, the boyfriend/male consort of the baselius is still a super important guy just because of that, and baseliuses were encouraged to have romantic encounters with boys their age growing up for the prestige of it, and to groom Male consorts for when they were adults, because the prestige of it. There may have been many stories of homosexuality from ancient Greek and Roman times, as bisexuality was considered part of the nature of the divine. I distinctly remember a story about a discus thrower who had a gay relationship with the spirit of the western wind, I believe. Historically, Emperor Nero married a transvestite named Sporus after his wife died and sporus carried a striking similarity in appearance, albeit slightly more masculine. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest written hero story in human history, the bromance between Gilgamesh and his best friend Enkidu is quite literally the stuff of legend It seems back then, there just wasn't the social divisions around the idea that exist today, as long as one did sire heirs with women(who were seen as inferior to men in many cultures), the lines between close friends and casual lovers seemed to break down based on the pair in question Ofcourse this changed due to Abrahamic religions taking a hard stance against the practice and then spreading across Eurasia and to North America with colonists. Funnily enough, the practice was seen as normal in china, where it was not uncommon to see male prostitutes and consorts, and this was a specific critique of several muslim chroniclers who made the journey to the middle kingdom.

There’s a similar story in Germany. I don’t remember all of it, but here fox isn’t that magical, he just gives advice. When trying to retrieve the golden bird, the older princes are lost in a fancy tavern where everyone parties while the youngest prince follows the fox‘s advice and stays at the humble tavern. He however disregards his advice when trying to retrieve the bird because he always used a fancy cage instead of the humble one which caused it to scream much like the tree here. He was caught and ordered to retrieve a golden horse which he failed in the same way and was ordered to retrieve a golden princess(probably in terms of hair and dress) which he also failed, but was given a different task. The fox helps him out all the way and lets him get away with the retrieved things, but before parting ways, he warns the prince to not buy „gallows meat“ or to sit near a well. Long story short, the prince ends up doing just that has he buys the lives of his brothers who messed up in the meantime and were sentenced to death and when they take a break, they push him down the well. But when they arrive back home, the bird doesn’t sing, the horse doesn’t eat and the princess won’t stop crying. The prince at the bottom of the well sees the fox again who scolds him for disregarding his advice and how he should let him die in the well, but feels sorry for him and pulls him out using his tail(I think there was some magic involved at this part, but I‘m not sure). When the prince returns to the castle in disguise, the bird starts singing, the horse starts eating and the princess stops crying and claims that her true love has returned. The prince reveals himself, he marries the princess and his brothers are punished. When he goes into the forest to hunt, he meets the fox again and asks him how he can repay him to which the fox responds that he should chop his head off and skin him. The prince doesn’t want to, but the fox begs him to do it anyway. The prince complies and after he‘s done, the fox turns into a prince because his curse to be a fox was broken. Strange ending, I know.

That's The Golden Bird from Grimm fairy tales. There's a lot of similar tales to that one from different cultures involving three princes and a search for a rare and magical bird.

There is a similar Russian fairytale called "Prince Ivan and the Gray Wolf." Only, as the title says, it features a wolf instead of a fox. Also, the wolf never really gets anything from his trouble, and his mystery is never resolved. Whenever I finished reading that fairytale, I would always think, "That's all nice and fine, but what's up with the wolf?" :)

Daryck Reese The reference here is the Fox is a Trickster, a type of demigod who is often malevolent towards those it doesn’t like but exceptionally generous and benevolent towards those it dose. The key to winning a Trickster over isn’t so much kindness, a trickster might actually take that for weakness and exploit it in a mean manner just for laughs. To win a tricksters respect you need a good sense of humor and be able to take a joke no matter how mean. It’s sort of like punching back at a bully and winning their respect for showing you’re tough.
