The king was not satisfied with the result of the competition announced for his marriageable daughter’s hand because the winner was a poor vagrant lad. The king decided to submit him to such a trial by what the king would get rid of him: the king made him hare-herder.
With the help of an old woman, who came from “stars” and gave him a “magic pipe”, the lad stood this trial as well. Indeed, through his wiles the lad outwitted the king and his daughter. Finally he gained the princess and the kingdom too.

The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

Some of the story is lost in the translation, though not much, but what's a shame is that the narrator's original folk wording is pretty much impossible to convey through translation.

@@Cindy99765 Not "MIStranslated" as such, it's just presented in very much modern english compared to the old-timey, folky hungarian of the original, and thus it's missing the delivery that made these tales feel like they've been told by your grandfather, which was a very deliberate characteristic of the series, and that sadly doesn't come through the english dub. The narrator of most of the episodes was Gyula Szabó, who was also the voice actor dubbing Peter Falk's movies.

The rabbits are so cute! I also love how the princess keeps twitching her nose like a bunny when the lad asks her for a kiss in exchange for one of the rabbits.

What we don't know is that multiple very powerful noble houses were vying to marry the daughter, and put their house on the throne instead of his -- and the king was actually complicit in making sure that the land would be ruled by a king who was wise cunning, and favored by the Gods, and who wasn't caught up in the factionalism, so he engineered the whole thing to ensure the independence of the royal house after he was gone.

Marriage back then was heavily political and extremely important in settling matters of state with other powerful families. As a lot of these stories play out, the only other way for a common born to marry into a royal family was through either heroic deeds or acts of great accomplishments. This of course is purely a peasant catch-22 to inspire hope and a satisfying ending for a common born rising to the ranks of royalty. Realistically however, the person would granted a lower status rank of Baron, Knight or Noble. This would grant them an middle/upper class social status and rights to own great areas of territory/land, also allow them to marry others within their social rank. However, royalty was exceptionally unlikely but suffice to say it made it easier having a Nobleman status then a peasant. For example, if the nobleman was very wealthy and/or controlled some other means that’s benefiting to the royal house then special exceptions come into play.

The peasant king's movements remind me of Prince Florian, my favorite character from "Walt" Disney. I just love all of these peculiar tales!

When I was little, I had heard a similar story, called “The Swineherd”. In this tale the prince disguised as the commoner came to the palace of the emperor and began the Swineherd. He had a magic pot with bells, which played a tune of “Ah, du lieber Augustin”, and he sold this pot to the Princess in exchange for ten kisses. The next time the princess had to kiss him 100 times in exchange for the magic rattle. But the emperor saw it and chased his daughter away, while the prince said that now he despises her, cause the princess more liked mechanic toys than living things.

The way they do get Rich or get married to Royalty by Blackmail I guess the moral of the story are you 🤔 Even though the girl protagonist did his job fair and square but yet resort to this kind of tactic order to get what he wants
