6 жыл бұрынI can't believe it's been 20 years of success for "Tanz der Vampire." Kudos to Jim Steinman, Michael Kunze, and all associated with the creation of that popular German rock musical.
As some of you may know, it's also been 10 years (last month) since I was first engaged on a project very close to my heart: a solicited English bid on that show. Rest assured, "Tanz" fans, this wasn't going to be a retread of "Dance of the Vampires." My team (and I, as the exec producer) worked very long and very hard on a new translation/adaptation that was true to the German material, similar in form, meaning, and spirit, while also having our own unique sense of poetry, language, etc., geared to the sensibilities of an English-speaking audience.
For a variety of reasons, this project has not yet moved forward. A planned reading in the summer of 2010 with Broadway caliber talent didn't happen, and it's been in limbo ever since (I mean, I personally have never quite let it go, but the level of activity has varied over the past seven years or so). I still have my memories. And the script, which is fantastic (but, due to confidentiality, unable to be shared). And... a handful of demos. They're rough, but they're good; the vocalists have a gorgeous quality, and they show how well the lyrics fit the melody (accurate to the German recordings, with a few of our accents thrown in). As the demos are available at our discretion, I decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Tanz" my way, by shedding a little light on the 10th anniversary of the version that never came to be.
This selection, known as "Gott ist tot" to German-speaking fans, is called "Hungry for Love." Vocals are by a young talent we were developing at the time named Evan Ryan. In this midnight serenade, the young, beautiful Sarah hears the voice of an aristocratic, charismatic vampire, the Count von Krolock, telling her of another world. The lure of the night is strong, as is the promised deliverance from the mundane world she knows.

Hi there, and thanks for the kind words! It's a bit of a complicated process; the rights holders are based in Vienna and England, and we would have to establish firmer contact with them. As Jim Steinman's manager once told us, "I don't mean to be pessimistic but it will be an uphill battle. But what else is new in the theater?"

You're welcome! Tanz is one of my favorite musicals, so it's wonderful and makes me happy to hear something from a good English adaptation. :) I can tell you all put a lot of love into it.

He does sound a lot like the guy who did the Carpe Noctem demo with Jim's lyrics, doesn't he? Good call! We'll see what transpires.

Shame this didn’t go anywhere because although I don’t hate the Broadway version, I’m liking the lyrics here far better

Thank you! We appreciate it. When our input was solicited, we discovered, much to our (lack of) surprise, that the German text had pretty much been roundly ignored in terms of lyrical content when it came to developing the Broadway version. So, we hunkered down and looked at the original German version closely, and tried to use similar imagery and convey the same -- or similar -- ideas through an English lens. In the case of this song, Krolock may not have been hungry for "love," per se, but the ideas conveyed in our lyric hew _very_ closely to the German lyric.

Unfortunately, we never recorded a take of "Total Eclipse of the Heart." As for the young man who sings on this demo, he has since moved on to his own projects. You can find his work on KZfaq if you search for "We Don't Win."

Thank you so much for the lovely compliment! I'm quite the fan of Jim Steinman as a lyricist, but (though I'm admittedly biased) I'd be lying if I said I didn't agree with you.
