On healthcare and politics: measles cases are being reported in Oregon (again), Clackamas County - due to people's exposure to unvaccinated carriers. We go through this in a cycle in Oregon; measles never seems to go away and smallpox even came back for a second, and this is in the Portland Metropolitan Area, not some isolated ranch community deep in the desert. I'm an asymptomatic carrier (haven't had a single symptom even with two people in my house coming down with it), but this is the *exact* reason why I'm triple shot at this point - I care about the people around me, even if I don't know them and even if they're assholes, they don't deserve to die in sometimes horrible ways just because "I didn't feel like it".

SAF-T (Simple And Fair Tax) 1) Eliminate ALL current taxes. 2) Tax Net Worth of ALL entities at same rate. 3) Rate calculated by dividing 105% previous year's total Federal budget by total net worth of ALL entities. No deductions. No adjustments. No exceptions. 2022 rate of 0.13% would have resulted in budget surplus. Single page form. Single page instruction. Simple reporting schedule. Easy audit. No loop holes. No juggling assets between personal and corporate for reduced taxes. Same day reporting deadline. Oh ... and churches pay.

Today I saw a video about a guy who put a lawn mower carburetor on a 70s Maverick 308 v8. This is a number of years ago. Dropped the HP to 60 (from like 300) and Torque to 120 average. To make it work he added a air control to mixture to maintain ratio for fuel. This is a heavy car, not aerodynamic. Consistently he was getting 40+mpg at freeway speeds and acceleration wasn't fast, but fast enough. So this clearly shows that for DECADES we could have been driving 40+ mpg cars and didn't because it wasn't a REQUIREMENT. Same is now true of EVs. Bigger bodies, bigger motors, more batteries $$$$!!! We should be driving super efficient, reliable compact low cost grocery getters. Want super speed? Rent one at the track, why are they on our common roads?

Universal Health Care-If they made it illegal to advertise meds, more would go into the development of them and they could be taxed properly for their profits to go into the health care system. Not medical care, health care. 2-3% of everyone's paycheck(instead of half your gross pay ) goes to the entire health system. Preventative care, all of it; actual yearly physicals with blood tests; Rx all covered so people can be properly medicated for what ails them...etc, etc, etc.

So many of the issues brought up in this episode are rooted in the nature of capitalism. Greed is the American paradigm. It's molded generations to be their worst selves, to be selfish, to lack empathy, to make money even if it kills the planet. A paradigm shift is needed. Capitalism needs enormous guardrails going forward. Human quality of life needs to be prioritized over personal wealth. Corporations and their alliances need to control far less of each market. Energy, agriculture, and healthcare need to be owned by the state/the people since necessities in private hands become leashes around our throats. I think most people are desperate to be free for the first time in decades.

The great irony of the illegal Mexican immigration issue is something that is almost always overlooked by those who disparage Mexico. We acquired half of Mexico by 1848 primarily because of the illegal immigration of citizens of the United States into the Mexican state of Texas in the 1820s and early 1830s. When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, Texas was only thinly settled by Spanish-speaking Tejanos. When American impresarios petitioned Mexico to allow some American families to settle in Texas, they were granted permission on the condition that they become Mexican citizens, embrace the Catholic faith, and obey Mexican laws. However, as these legal Americans arrived to take advantage of free land, thousands of illegal Americans also crossed the border. It wasn’t long before the “illegals” outnumbered the original Tejano population. Moreover, as Mexican law prohibited slavery, the newcomers came up with creative language to describe their human property as other than property. Officials in Mexico were aware of the problem but there was never a sufficient Mexican military presence in Texas to stem the flow of illegals or to enforce the law against slavery. Exacerbating the challenge was the fact that the Mexican Constitution of 1824 assigned to the national government insufficient powers of purse and sword. In response to a law in 1830 prohibiting further American immigration to Texas and President Santa Anna’s campaign to replace the federal system with a more centralized authority, Texans rebelled in 1836 and declared the Lone Star Republic. The rebels created a constitution that legalized slavery and elected a provisional president who opposed the right of Tejanos to vote. Some 78 percent of the volunteers flooding into Texas to fight Mexico in 1836 arrived illegally (after 1830). Heroes of the Alamo like Davy Crockett and William Travis were illegal aliens, as was Sam Houston, whose army defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto. A decade later it was our annexation of Texas, a disputed border, and Mexican refusal to sell us California that prompted the Mexican War by which we acquired the northern half of Mexico.

That’s a nice history lesson, but today the blame for illegal immigration and the scapegoating thereof belongs to the government, no matter who is in power, ignoring the companies who illegally employ undocumented workers. But if there was ever a crackdown on these employers (virtual slavers in most cases) the economy would fall. The dirty secret is that the US is dependent on cheap migrant labor (as well as cheaper overseas labor) and neither major party will ever ‘solve’ immigration. The other dirty secret is keeping Americans dumb enough to not think critically about issues or do any research into anything.

Healthcare: I live in Belgium. My health insurance is 280€ per year, I think. Dental basics included. Because it's not a corporation; it's an NGO. I guess one can go private for the luxuries like a private room and such, mais bon. I pay 6€ for a 15-min doctor consultation. Medication often is between 5€ and 25€ for a full treatment. When I had a full-blown pneumonia and 41C fever, I think I paid something like 60€ in total for doctor visits and medication (anti-biotics, nasal sprays; whatever it was that got me through it). And a high price in hallucinations, which was kind of weird But apparently that happens when you go above 40C 🤣
