Ill agree with this guy, and take it a step further. As a guy who lives and hunts in WYOMING I can tell you with complete certaintly 80% or more of the people writing about western hunting have never hunted here, or were paying an expensive guide. I do take some long shots. I once shot an antelope at 486 yards with 300 win mag. 10 minutes after sunrise. The following year, i shot a mule deer. Same mountain. Same ridge. 10 minutes after sunrise. 84 yards. Open sage brush. Bow hunting last year, i passed up a 44 yard shot on a white tail. The key, get where the deer go. Its easy in the open mountains, the one little place with trees and water is where they all go.

I’m not trying to be rude but I believe you are wrong about the high velocity ammo at close range. It will do the opposite of not expanding. It will actually expand so rapidly that it would explode. Then it would not leave an exit wound or blood trail. The round nose would expand even faster since it has more surface area containing up front. It kills them quickly but they can be very hard to find without an exit or blood trail. That’s why I switched over to copper bullets for my 308. They stay together better and even if the do come apart the base stays solid and creates an exit wound. I’ve never had to track one though. Every deer I have taken with 308 and copper bullets has dropped in its tracks. They don’t work well for long range though. They need high velocity to expand well. Because copper is harder than lead. I think they are the perfect option for high velocity rifles shooting under 300 yards. You are correct about the 30-30 being a great deer caliber with round nose bullets. It’s highly affective at its intended ranges. I shoot a 308 win and I just don’t understand why so many people shoot 300 win mag and 7mm mag. It’s so expensive to shoot and recoil is brutal. An it’s not even needed. Unless you are hunting at very long ranges. The little old 30-30 drops them!

Shot my first deer with a pre -64 30-30. Thirty five years later, eyesight isn't nearly as sharp for irons, but with a rear peep and williams firesight front , I am ready to get reacquainted with the old Winchester.

Sir you hit the nail right on the head! I'm a fellow NH hunter. 7 years ago I lost two giant bucks two seasons in a row with a 308 165 gr federal fusion. One at 60 yds the other at 40 yds. Long story short I now only hunt with round or flat nose bullets. Ive taken 6 deer since that time and I haven't had to track one of them. The 30-30, 35, 44, to name a few are the premium hunting calibers for NH. I use 180 gr 308 round nose quite a bit and Ive shot deer from 20 feet to 300 yds and it just planted them. I wish more people would take your advice because it's the absolute truth.

I find it interesting that Sierra makes a Round Nose Pro Hunter 308 Cal bullet in 125, 150 and 180 grain. There must be people using round nose bullets for a reason. Perhaps it's because they work ?

No disrespect, but you’re incorrect by saying the spritzer type bullets don’t expand as much inside of 100’ due to high velocity. It’s quite the opposite actually. The faster the bullet is moving when it hits media, the quicker and more dramatic the expansion. Expansion is a direct result of velocity and the density of the object being struck by the bullet.

we track wounded deer with our dogs for hunters, we’ve seen a lot of those bullets just zip through in short yardage (under100 with some being under 60) little hole in little hole out. just our experience

You might be seeing to tought a bullet of the game or a bullet made for 300mag speeds being shot in a 303 savage or something. But standard cup and core soft point expand more at higher speed. I do think the round nose might hit a bit harder whit rn normally being heavy for caliber. But here a simple test that some gun writer did in a magazine in the 90's and I have seen repeated on a range. Take a 405 gr .458 bullet made for a 45-70 safe for all rifles. Shoot it out of a 460 weatherby, a 458 win mag and a 45-70. The bullet from the 45-70 will penetrate better in wet phone books. It normally comes apart being shot out of the 460 because it's so fast and beyond what the bullet was made for

Hello. Are you still using round nose bullets ? If so, update please. I'm interested to learn more. Thanks. I wish you good health, prosperity and successful hunting.

Good. Thank you. I shall start using the 150gn 308 Pro Hunter from Sierra. My father always said round nose was best for hunting. I wish you good health and prosperity.@@huntersmoonproductions3452

I can see this. If I can bow hunt and get within 15yds I can get within 50 for a rifle hunt I would like to see some other ballistics though say what a 45-70 round nose flat point would do at 50-100 yds or even 200 yds. I would say it would even do great out of a pistol.

With all due respect, a vast majority of spitzer and tipped spitzer bullets are designed to expand at a wide range of velocities. Noslers tipped bullets, for example, expand reliably from 1800-3200fps: no hunting weight 308 will ever even reach that upper velocity. Ballistic tips expand MORE at higher velocities, not less. This is why you dont want to use say a Hornady A-Max at screaming velocities at short distances (too much expansion, bullet integrity is comprimised). I like round-nosed bullets too, as my Appalachian hunting distances are under 100yrds. But i have no problem using a spitzer bullet either. Fact is, with normal “deer calibers” at short distances, it really doesnt matter what bullet you use (as long as its a bullet designed for hunting, obviously).

as licensed leashed tracking dog handlers we are seeing an uptick in complete pass through of spitzer type bullets with zero expansion on both deer and black bear here in nh. entrance and exit holes are finger size so little to no external blood trail. some of these animals are actually surviving hits that would have been fatal had the bullet expanded. what you read on paper from the manufacturer is not always what happens in the real world , and yes as trackers we don’t get calls for the successes only the failures of bullet performance I have often wondered recently if with all this Covid uproar if manufacturers are cutting corners and causing quality and performance to not be what it should be I appreciate your comment and please keep watching!

I have had ballistic tips fragment producing superficial wounding. Nosler changed the production. Even in the same name bullets can behave differently depending on when manufactured - but I’ve only been reloading for 50 years. Someone with more experience may have a different opinion.
