Lived in Southeast Alaska for 12 years, shot several mountain goat's, 11 bears, and about 40 deer, caught many salmon. If you can handle the rain and the jungle, it's a sportsman's paradise...

Agreed. That is a special kind of jungle and when it rains, it gives a new definition to "it's wet out there." Thanks for watching.

Great video. You captured the hunt perfectly. As a young man fresh out of Desert Storm and aircraft school I found myself chasing the Sitka Blacktail Deer in Southeast Alaska. Now 52 years old I long to get back to my old stomping grounds. This video reminds me of how much work lies ahead to get into the shape needed to hunt the alpine. A great motivator. Thank you for sharing your hunt. I remember reading stories about Jim and his muzzleloader back then. His hunts gave me inspiration as does this hunt. I shall return.

Blacktail deer is pretty much the only thing I hunt, here in Western Washington. Very cool to see a pro like Randy take on the challenge few celebrity hunters are willing to attempt to video document. That place is absolutely beautiful, and Jim Baichtal is obviously a legend Sitka blacktail deer hunter.

Randy...Your videos are how videos should be made. You show no ego what so ever......, just thankfulness to be able to be alive and experience such a great place. You are who I will try to emulate. Your video guy does a great job of gathering footage and producing an inspiring experience. I am a fan, and I hope more guys can strive to be as humble as you. I have been hunting Southeast Alaska since 1984 and will hunt there until I die. Kirk

I did a DIY Sitka Blacktail hunt on Kodiak Island. I hiked from the ocean to the alpine through alder jails and devil's club hell holes. I was successful in tagging a buck, and from the climb up to the pack out, it was the single hardest thing I've done in my life. The Devil's Club made me look like I had been in a fight with a rabid alley cat. Just like you said, the greatest part of the pack out was the relief that nobody got hurt. I was just glad to get out alive. I came out on fumes. I had to dig deeper than I ever had at any point beforehand. I can't wait to do it again. Your videos reminded me of how bad I want to get up there and hunt those fat little deer.

That’s how it is in the South Carolina mountains-real thick with very few open spots. I know that feeling you got-trapped and never going to make it. The difference here is the canopy is heavy as well and it holds the humidity and sucks all your energy out. A good shower and meal and ready to hit it again. At least you can see the deer. Here, if you see them you were at the right place at the right time.

Absolutely and quite literally breathtaking. I definitely enjoy and appreciate your perspective on each hunt, especially when it involves family and or friends new and old. Even though one didn't technically use/pay for an outfitter or guide service having a friend that trust you and is so knowledgeable and experienced in this area is like having a guide but so much better. Congrats to the both of you and your cameraman Tyler. Alaska is a Sportsman's Paradise and a bucket list place to visit.

+Randy Newberg, Hunter hey I live in Arkansas. Arkansas has the best public duck hunting in the world. I would take you and your crew out in the flooded timber of Arkansas for a mallard shoot. the cache and white river are my stomping grounds we winter more mallards than any where in the world. They are both National wildlife refugees. I'd like to see you make a show on this public ground. I would love have you come down. we have limited on mallard almost every day 10 man limits. There is nothing like 60 mallards landing in a gap in the trees 20 yards wide at first light.

On hunts like this how do you keep the meat fresh over several days in what appears over 40 degree temps?

Shade, wind, areas where evaporation drops temps by 10F, synthetic game bags that transfer moisture.

Hello Randy, Do you use hearing protection when hunting?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 8 жыл бұрын
No, but I should. A young life of operating chain saws, working in a sawmill, and not wearing hearing protection when shooting had demolished my hearing by age 25. Stupid answer, I know. I hope young people see me as an example and protect their hearing from all things, hunting or otherwise.

I'm not nearly as awesome as Randy but I have a tip: I use a quality pair of electronic earmuffs (Sordin MSA Pro). It actually helps me hear better and protects the ears during the shot. Try it out, there are plenty of options - many people like the $40 howard leight, I used them for years before upgrading.

Because we knew we would be coming back someday and we wanted to use the trip down to find an easier route than what we took to get there. We went back last month, and that track was much better than the trail we took up there on this hunt.

If I wanted to go on the most affordable public land elk hunt with the best chance of success what state would you recommend ?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
I would say that Colorado would be the best bet, due to the Over-The-Counter licenses that could be had. Lots of hunting pressure, so age class of bulls is younger. But, lots of elk and lots of public land. Good luck.

Excellent. Much better than any Muley or Whitetail I've had. I rate it only second to Dall Sheep. Did an Elk hunt on Raspberry Island several years back where we also got deer. Cooked some Elk and deer tenderloins in the same skillet and personally I liked the deer better.

Do you think a Winchester model 70 Remington 222 is a good deer rifle?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
I would suggest something a bit larger. Yes, a .222 will kill a deer if hit properly, but you will have to pass many shots to get that perfect shot. Additionally, many states have minimum caliber restrictions that require large cartridges than a .222.
