Hunting "ethics" are part of why such a pest problem now exists even in the easy sites where some influence by rec hunters can be expected. Although those with decent "ethics" will have consistent high moral ground if they don't kill female possums and rats etc that might be nursing young. Fawns will survive ok Feb onwards if an are isn't overpopulated. They also are also choice eating, and hinds are usually better than mature stags. The ethics of not risking a doubtful shot on a stag at long range are commendable, it's difficult to believe the modern practice of not getting close doesn't result in excessive lost animals, the efforts edited that don't make it to the screen.

@@johnmead8437 are you saying stalking in close is a better option than long range risky shot and guys that do miss edit it out there are many factors too y deer population get out of control and it's not just because of the odd selective hunter

@@ruahinehunter7441 The dearth of misses and films of those that limp off is suggestive. Particularly since so many cannot hit much easier shots much closer. But leaving perforated animals around doesn't fit with ethics preaching (which is not suggesting kill shot ethics should be practiced as best as circumstances allow). There is a vocal hunting sector who feel their "ethics" and ideas about "game management" should be prioritised, it is commonly shown passing up animals and "being selective for the betterment of the herd". And history has clearly shown the way for better animals is lower population. Those promoting selectivity will the first to throw tantrums when pest control is expanded to include poison. Something it would be preferable to avoid, but the tahr control fiasco shows clearly current attitudes & methods are ineffective, & in many ways ignorant.
