Interesting that these very experienced hunters all speak fondly of the versatility of the good old 30-06.

I once had a long conversation with Mark Selby, Harry’s son. He told me the story of Robert Ruark purchasing two rifles from the estate of W.D.M. Bell. A Westley Richards double as I recall and more significantly the .275 Rigby which Bell had previously made so famous. As Ruark was Mark’s godfather, Robert gifted both those rifles to him. Many years later, Mark was approached by Rigby to purchase the .275. He said he mentioned what he believed to be an outlandish price and Rigby immediately agreed. The second most famous rifle Rigby ever produced, Harry Selby’s .416 at that time was in the possession of a friend and safari client of his father’s and was not for sale at any price. Truly enjoyed the video as I’m a huge fan of these writers and their works.

this is a superb video, one of the most enjoyable info packed productions i have ever seen, at the end of my sixth decade, i have perused and enjoyed many of the writers featured in real time back in their day, and now want to revisit them all. for new hunters wanting to embrace the lifestyle, these writers are the gateway to passion, responsibility, and humility. well done, well done!

Lol, brought me back to memory lane when I was reading magazines and books on guns and hunting decades ago. It's funny to hear people like buddington describe as an old sage when back in my day he was one of the new kids on the block; my how things change when you're not looking! Lol.

Really great content. I've always caught crap for carrying a 30-06 - it's always either too much or not enough. I'm also a big fan of the 9.3X62, it's the African '06. I guess I just don't like magnum cartridges.

I always liked Sam Fadala and his book on the 30-30/Winchester '94. Good job man, the way you put this together was pretty sweet.

I definitely enjoy watching Meat Eater by Steve Rinella I have a couple of his books. I also enjoy Ron Spomer's stuff too. His You-Tube videos are informative. I also like Craig Bodington and Jack O'Connor. The think the consensus with most of these guys who hunt professionally and are out door writers, when it comes to cartridge selection is that the 30-06 and .375 H&H are pretty much gospel. I do own both rifles. Don't get much use out of them because I do a majority of my hunting in VA and PA hunting whitetails. I prefer the good ole 7x57mm. If I hunt Black bear, I do bring out the 30-06.

i have by chance gone BACK to this video. It is a most prolific and productive piece of "boredome" you did . I did find new things to analize . Thanks a lot!!! By the way mine peered cartridges is the old and very unknown 7,65x54 in an Argentine Mauser! Otherwise I go for the 30-06 and the other international available cartridge, the 308!

Excellent video. Being solely a ram, sheep, and deer hunter myself, I enjoy Jack O Connor's writing's on the. 270 Winchester. I grew with a .243, but have taken most game with my model 70 in 270.

African Rifles and Cartridges by Taylor has taught me very much about them,and what to look for in seeing rifle and ammo combos that turns up in may ways .

The first hunting books I ever read way back in the early seventies were written by Jack O'Connor And I still hunt with a 270 most of the time

You know at first I didn’t really enjoy your videos, but I have continued to watch then and honestly have grown to enjoy when you post content

When I was a kid my Grandfather gave me his copy of Jack O'Conner's "The Hunting Rifle" along with many other gun books. This book and Gene Hill's column in Field & Stream set the tone and perception of hunting for me as young man.

Well done. I grew up reading my dad's Outdoor Life, Sports Afield and Field and Stream magazines, and going through his old hunting books. He's gone now, and so are the books. But this makes me want to start haunting used bookstores to see if I can dig some of these old tomes up. Thanks for doing this.

I became a follower of his writings mostly at first because he is left handed as am I. His experience is so wide and deep that it deserves attention.

This is a conversation that should be held around a campfire. And would need to start early in the morning and would last days. I’ve started such conversation around the fire in Africa with multiple PH’s. Around that fire. About Big bores to small game stuff. It’s hard to argue with the Pros.

The British hunters used a lot of rifles and calibers based on the 303 British. Lots of Americans used rounds based on the 30-06? Necking them down to 25-06 and 270 or up to 35 Whellan or even 40 caliber. Back in the day 30-06 Brass was common and cheap. I once bought out a reloader who loaded the 30-06 up and down, shortened it, necked it down or blew it out and spent 40 years doing everything imaginable with that case. Very versatile.

Fascinating video and thanks for sharing your scholarship on this subject. I learned a lot and have also enjoyed the You Tube videos by Rinella and Spomer. Over the last year Spomer seems to have really settled on the 7mmRM as his favorite/recommended all around rifle it seems. Interesting to hear all your comments about authors who went "full circle" back to the 30-06. I saved myself the round trip and have always considered my 30-06 to be that go-to rifle, but then again I've only hunted North America so far in life. Always enjoy your vids and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the hard work you put into this video. I grew up reading Jack O'Connor and eventually moved to Tucson. I've hunted the Coues whitetail ever since, but ended up with first a 257 Roberts, then a 257 Weatherby (prior to laser rangefinders), then a 6.5 Creedmoor and finally on to a Howa mini rifle with a carbon stock in 6.5 Grendel. I just bought a Model 54 Winchester in 270 with an original 3x Noske scope. I'll have to come up with something to hunt with a 270 finally!

MERRY CHRISYMAS 2023!!!!! I just happened upon your video this morning and was completely captivated by it. I own and have read more than a few of the books that you reference and agree heartily with the statements made about medium rifle calibers for most game, dangerous African species being the exception. As a disabled hunter, I have used the .270, .30-06, .308, and the 7mm Mauser. Your favorite hunting authors are mine as well and I say this: If indeed you completed the video project to combat boredom, I'd LOVE to see you at work with something that you are passionate about (lol).You really ought to write a book incorporating an encyclopedic approach to chronicling the lives (and rifle calibers)of the hunting authors you discuss; I'd buy it in a heartbeat!!!! One suggestion: Sasha Siemel's book Tigrero should be included. Many thanks for one of the most entertaining and informative videos I've watched this year!!!!!

the men around me growing up were all veteransof WW1 and WW 1 and Korea. Naturally, when I bought my first hunting rifle it was a 30-06. that was more than 50 years ago and that rifle and scope are still making meat, everything from Moose to Whitail and antelope. Ive even used it on varnints with 22 cal sabot rounds

Love your videos Desert Dog! I used to get fascinated reading Jim Corbett and Kenneth Anderson books while I was still a teenager back home in Nepal. They made a mini-movie on the Man eating Leopard of Rudraprayad which is on youtube now but it doesn't do the book any justice. I was happy to see two khukuris on your other video. I live in PNW now and I want to get into ethical hunting. I am sold on your advice on choosing 30-06 for games in my area. Keep on making these amazing vids!

In regards to JOC, his wife, Eleanor shot an elephant with her 30/06. I'm a big JOC fan, and have virtually all his books. I really enjoy the writings of Robert Ruark. His books "Horn of the Hunter" and "Use Enough Gun" are wonder reads. Looking at the books on your desk, I must say, I have them all.
