In this video I use Google Maps to talk about my history of hunting for fossils (primarily sharks teeth) in and around Charleston SC. Reference Cooper River. Edisto River. Wando River. Summerville creeks. In the end, your best bet is to use Fossil Hunting Guides. Yes there is a cost but it eliminates a lot of otherwise problems
Refrence: Fossils are formed in the sedimentary layers of the earths crust. They will remain there millions of years until something disturbs them. Rain, rivers, and creeks are what typically cause a fossil to become dislodged from the sediment. The fossil will then gravitate towards other materials of the same weight and density. This is why sharks teeth are often found in gravel beds

I recently moved to Mount Pleasant from NY a cpl years ago. Grew up vacationing down in Topsail and Surf City NC finding tons of teeth. No luck at all here at isle of palms and Sullivan’s. I’ve looked in some creek beds here in MP and Awendaw but no luck. I don’t want to find teeth for $. I have a job that does that. I like to find teeth for me. It’s a great hobby and displaying them in my home is cool.

The fossils here in Charleston and surrounding areas are abundant but very elusive. Although a "stray" will surface occasionally due to rain and erosion, most loose fossils migrate towards gravel and rocks of similar weight and density. I have found them just laying out in the open on the ground but that is rare. Any gravel beds within 20 miles of the coast are always a good place to look.

Thanks for this. I'm hoping to hit the Edisto once water levels drop. I'll let you know if I do any good.

The water level is currently dropping like a rock. It should be at 4.5' this coming Saturday

I'm so envious. I would absolutely love to be able to get out there and hunt.

That is exactly what it takes to find them. It takes time and dedication

can confirm the distance of at least 20 miles off the coast is a good rule of thumb to use in north carolina as well

If you are looking for some kind of recorded study of fossils found over time .... no, I do not have that.... sorry. This is based on observations and experience. It is common knowledge among local long time very experienced fossil hunter/collectors.

Based on your latest videos you are not spending much time toothing these days. If your bushwhacking to get to new spots it's hard work. I've been going to the Charleston area and the peace a couple times a year and I've got some good not great teeth. THE hardest part about shark tooth hunting is researching where your gonna go. I mean topographic maps, and hunting down the on-line not just where the chandler bridge formation was but where it was at or close to the surface . There's not of good formation so deep we will never see it. You do concur I'm sure. EVEN with a ton of research in and a master plan I might find nothing or find myself somewhere I shouldn't be. When some says "WHERE exactly did you find them " I chuckle. It's like people wanting to know the GPS coordinates of my favorite fishing spots. You tell one person and there are 50 there the next time you go. You have to earn it or have a really good friend.

I am just now recovering from a two-year battle with cancer. I do want to hunt some more, but it will all have to come with time. I have found my share of fossils, mostly sharks teeth, of course. I wasn’t active hunter for 25 years. 20 years of that was on the river bottoms. The last hunt I went on was in 2023. It was unproductive.

Excellent video. I'm a Florida hunter so it's nice to get some good advice if I ever make it up there to hunt now I'll know 🤗🫶

There are two fossilized layers of earth that run through South Carolina. They are named the Hawthorne formation and the Chandler Bridge formation. These formations come closest to the surface of the Earth around 20 miles inland. This is where your teeth come from. They get washed out of the foundation, and then as time passes, they move towards the ocean. This is why you will seldom find a fossil 30 or 40 miles inland.
