Hiking the eastern outskirts of central Israel. These open areas, once part of wide military firing zones are dotted with ruins, rock-hewn installations, pottery sherds and other small finds such as tesserae. On this particular day we hiked toward a hill with a large ruin at its top.
Unlike other ruins in the area this one has a distinctly strong presence of Roman pottery sherds (prior to what we often refer to as the Byzantine period in Israel). This ruin displays some of the hallmarks of a fort by virtue of its dominating strategic location and its architectural layout which can be observed beneath piles of collapsed rocks.
