We head out at the peak of summer, fly fishing a high country cutthroat trout stream in ultra-low water. Many of the trout have dropped downstream to find higher flows. In this video we share how we hunt the trout that have stuck around in these flows - looking at trout habitats in ultra-low flows. We share how to read trout water, what flies we use, how long our leaders are, and how to approach and cast to these trout to have the best chance of success. Along the way we engage a few gorgeous trout in truly wonderful settings. Join us as we share subtle fly fishing tips & tactics!

Okay, who else showed up expecting Mater the tow truck from the Cars movie to teach us fly fishing? JK of course, video title aside. What a great opening presentation and take; well done again! Curious how you continue to find such nice fish when the levels are down. When summer comes, most of us "fish the nursery", unless the evenings give us something bigger to aim for.

HA! That's about right. :) Love that series. :) Loved that opening fish - we both got a good go on that one - totally exciting :) Honestly we just go for a walk where we think the water will be cool to cold when it makes sense - note the weather in that video. Chances are when it's warm but cool warm that trout will be active and when it's cloudy it's a good day to go poke about the in-cover trout so we can see under that cover... you would be far more hard-pressed to see those same fish in heavy contrast of sun-shade. So... timing and choice of location, when. Cheers!

I'm just so surprised that these fish aren't spooked by your presence. I'd be fishing far back and prospecting. Do you ever think that you've spooked fish by intentionally sight-casting and looking for them and them seeing you first? That's what I'd be afraid of! Loved it as usual!
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 2 жыл бұрын
If your approach is slow and methodical and you don't gain too much height on a trout without having a bush barrier or something to keep your presence known, you can get very close and they won't spook. Often in cases of super low, clear water hiding spots or places to spook to (especially in a stream like this) are limited and they have to live where they live if that makes sense. The one's that are completely under the downed logs aren't often reachable anyway, unless you find a way to draw them out.
@akintomeatloaf

@@jensenflyfishing Ah yes, I was just amazed at a few of those fish earlier in the video didn't spook that the camera could see clearly thru the water, meaning they could probably see you clearly too. Slow and steady! You're experienced stalkers so I was wondering if there were other secrets ... :D

fly line cleaner??? ;) Honestly with how much we fish we don't clean it. We walk on it, wrap it on rocks and logs, bleach it in the sun etc. We tend to do 120 days in Alberta and 80 days in New Zealand and that's a new line every year. Using DT line we'll flip it at the 1/2 life.

I think hour and a quarter walk, half hour bike ride was also a learning point. These cut-throats certainly seem a very willing fish. Don't get them down here in Oz/NZ.
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 2 жыл бұрын
100% In these conditions this summer it REALLY spells out how few fish there are (much similar to NZ headwaters) and how easily these waters could be fished out (hence C&R). In these locations where not many people get to if you see a fish you'll get the take - it's as simple as that really. We've often thought cutthroat trout in a few headwater locations in NZ would be a perfect match. :)

Wow amazing guys my friends are fishing crowsnest right now and i have a question for you, why most of the cutthroat in this area have their mouth corner destroyed ?
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 2 жыл бұрын
It's not just this region. It's every cutthroat trout stream in the province from Montana to the Cardinal. Simply put ours are generally low populations of slower growing fish that are caught and release likely 5 to 30+ times each season. We are all targeting and catching/releasing the exact same individual trout. Once you wrap around your head around the fact that in most waters there is 1 or 2 wintering pools per km of river you understand how few of the larger cutts there are. As regional Biologist Mel Kraft said back in the 80s there are likely at any time fewer than 500 mature cutthroat trout in the N Ram system. Hence our stance that it is finally time for a trout Ecology and handling course as a prerequisite to getting an east slopes license. 🍻

This video is frustrating because everything is beautiful, great location, great cinematics but no real detail as to what you are using as far as fishing gear and filming gear...or casting technique. Pretty but not particularly informative to newbies. That said , I guess it's somewhat informative when it comes to prospecting but leaves me feeling like your just showing off.
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah and welcome to our channel. Sometimes in life we don't fully appreciate what we're looking at and how we can benefit from it. This might be one of those times and hopefully we can help you in that. First, the title of the video is "Hunting Trout in Ultra-Low, Gin-Clear Water". The idea is to share what we know about trout behaviour seasonally, why they will be where they are in such a stream in these conditions. We discuss what we're looking for and how we find the fish in different micro-habitat and share the reading the water and associating it with where trout will be. There is a ton of great information about these things because that is what this video is about - it's difficult to have fly fishing success this time of the year without understanding these things. Seen through that light it's incredibly foundational information for new fly fishers. Now, regarding flies, as you watch a few of our videos you'll soon discover that we're almost laughably simple as we use the most basic, common patterns such as Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Pheasant Tail & Hare's Ear Nymphs. We always invite you to ask. The big thing is that invitation to ask because as 2 of us, just a husband & wife team and no additional resources, we can only do so much on the water and have to respect our audience as well - if we shared every aspect of what we do in every video this 52 minute long video would balloon to 1:30 quickly and would be an incredible bear to edit. These things are shared in the evolution of our videos series and all that information is combined as a whole in the series. In the same light, if we focused on showing the casting then we'd miss out on the tight, close up eats of the dry flies and that would miss out on trout behaviour pertaining to how these fish respond and move to our flies and eat or refuse them. As with all things in life there are limitations and if we focused on one thing others would want something more elsewhere. We encourage you to really have a look at things like where trout are holding, why, how we found them, the tactic of approaching them and how they respond to the fly (how far they're willing to travel) amongst a host of other neat, subtle aspects. Again, welcome to our channel and hope you are able to get out lots the rest of the season! Dave & Amelia.
