Please read this description before commenting..... and please don't watch this until you've watched part 1, my video about "rosin". It is vital that you don't miss it, rosin is the cure not the cause of issues. Start by getting the rosin on then at least you'll know that you've started correctly, if you don't then you'll be lost forever and will never ever know why, ever. Anyway this is a vid demonstrating my method for applying cotton it is called part 2 for a reason, it comes after part 1 called "ROSIN" did I mention that already? Never complain that "I put the rosin on and it sounded terrible so it must be the rosin that caused it" it isn't, it's something else, it'll be very likely too much string pressure on the wheel or cotton so..... ok.........you've watched rosin? yes? ok move on.... I use balls of 100% viscose (rayon fibre in the USA) it's used for make-up removal and on bits of babies..... some people use tampon cotton or the stuff you find in medicine bottles. I don't use natural cotton, it's too slippery. Find stuff that pulls out into long strands as shown with no bobbles in. Check out the bags of cotton balls you find in pharmacies until you find one that looks like the one I use.... would be my advice, the badminton racquet string i use for the high d chanter is Yonex bg65 "soft feel" Good luck!

Thank you very much for this, Nigel. It's just what I'll need when my gurdy arrives eventually.

As i said, LOVE your style - and don't bother to cow tow to the needs of the other side of pond ... you have a breadth of experience that suggests others should put in work to understand you, not vice a versa. I look forward to many more Nigel.

Fascinating! I enjoyed this video. I will never have the opportunity to touch a Hurdy Gurdy, but I guess this is the next best thing. My dulcimer will have to do. 😉

Great stuff Nigel. You don’t specify any particular type of badminton string for the first chanterelle. I’ve been through just about every make out there and of them all, there is just one type that stands out for tone and reliability. The brand is “Yonex” and the type is BG 65.

thanks neil, ive just added the info to the description. I'll do a string vid at some point but i only use a few types and theres so much contrary opinion out there, anyway at least i can say what i use. The cotton i use was a bag of mcdonalds snodrops bought in a finefare in Wareham in 1982, pretty sure they went bust the following year but ive still got 3/4 of a bag
@nwbrook
@nwbrook 4 жыл бұрын
Nigel Eaton I ran out of snodrops years ago , mainly by giving them away . I now have a carrier bag full of viscose direct from a manufacturer. Silly price but a lifetime supply. I used to blend it with bamboo fibre which is itself a kind of viscose but it doesn’t make much difference apart from letting me call it “Booray” . Good to see the resurgence of the gurdy in recent years and the innovations that are attracting the younger players.

@@nwbrook I'm glad innovations are attracting a new crowd but it is and will always be the traditional side for me, though i am also one of the new crowd if not exactly young - I particularly like both your and Nigel's straight to the point vids about the in's and outs too, there ain't no knowledge like experience and you fellas have a lot of that (Nigel's cotton and rosin purchased in the eighties bahahah).

For synthetic cotton wool, I've bought some stuff from local craft shop, meant for stuffing home-made soft toys. This idea came from Gordiy Starukh who made my new (very cheap) Ukrainian gurdy. He supplied a sample of the fibres with the gurdy. It's a bit frizzy, which seems to help. I'm only a beginner, but the stuffing fibre does seem to sound better than some cotton fibres ordered ("suitable for gurdies") from Airdale Yarns.

the stuff i have is made by Welcome a drug company, it's used as make-up remover balls, also can be found in the tops of bottles of medicine , pills etc, also tampons, make sure it pulls into long threads like the video and with no bits in

So the string does not touch the wheel directly but the cotton grabs the wheel transfer the force to the string? Very nice to know.
@nigeleaton1
@nigeleaton1 4 жыл бұрын
well it touches a bit, (the high d string) like everything to do with hurdy gurdies there's subtlety and balance, the other strings all touch far more and actually bend round the wheel, not that is should be possible to see this very clearly, if you can see the bend then it's too much, use ears, plenty of rosin and be prepared to mess about with it for the rest of your life

What gurdy do you own? Is the wheel polished smooth ? Did you watch the rosin video yet? What cotton do you have? What tuning are you in? You might have too much string pressure at the bridge. Yes I see your point hahahahhaha
@gromgaming7438
@gromgaming7438 5 ай бұрын
I was definitely not expecting a reply, but it is greatly appreciated! It’s a nerdy gurdy, the wheel is very smooth and feels polished (though there is a section that is slightly raised) I have watched your rosin tutorial, I’ve been tinkering with the amount of rosin, cotton and bridge pressure. My drone strings are G/C and they are working fine, but it’s my lower melody string that won’t cooperate. (I haven’t even bothered with the nylons yet) The cotton is from a store bought bag of 100% cotton balls, seems at least close enough to the ones in the video, but I suppose that very well may be the problem.
