Magnificent Century
I love architecture so everywhere I travel to I pay a special attention to how things were built comparing to how they would have them built today. Back then, things were built to last, today we build today to destroy tomorrow, very sad. The royal bathroom for the sultans and their mothers was amazing as they had indoor plumbing while "Guardez l'eau" was still being shouted out in Europe and palaces in Europe were still using bedpans..etc...
Walking through the royal hamman full of sunlights and coolness from the marble walls imagining how they used to carry out their daily routine in bathing and personal hygiene here...

Squatty toilets are designed to do your glory and come out straight away and not spend time on your phones whilst having a dump! Plus squatting helps you to dump your dump quicker because of the pressure applied to your stomach. In other parts of the world they would sit next to each other talking whilst taking a dump which is disgusting.

Not only that but i read that they used to do it everywhere, like…EVERYWHERE. I don’t remember what kingdom or which king ruled back then but i read that the whole castle used to be filled with poop since they didnt have toilets and just pulled their pants down anywhere to do it, even in parties in front of everyone and stuff so even commoners avoided going around there since they could smell the dumb meters away

The Ottoman Dynasty was brilliant in architecture, design, mosaics, plumbing and sewage control. Particularly the creative visions of Sultan Suleiman, who had the intellect to make them into realities for generations to come. I'm amazed! 👏🔱 I noted that there were nice water fountains all over the countryside (really pretty), rather than open wells, for people to simply turn on taps for cooling off on walks, or drinking water in "Magnificient Century". Were those really available even out in the country during that Era? Also along the palace walls and in town see the same little built-in basins with spouts. Way advanced, even for now as our western metal fountains rust and are so ugly. I wonder what piping is used underground and the water sources. Was the water treated? Also, about the advanced "bath rooms" in the palace and built in town (and other living spaces like the harem). If there was glass in the openings in the ceiling, how did they get ventilation for air flow? I thought the heat escaped in warmer months through the ceilings (heat rises) and for room ventilation, but maybe that was provided through side windows? Having a degree in interior design, I'm really interested. 😊⚘ And do the urinals & basins that conserve water, by scooping a little out at time to rinse for bathing, look the same? Were bathing and bathroom functions in the same place or separate? The cleanliness, beauty, and longevity is so far ahead of its time. Most impressive that many of these buildings & water fountains have withstood the test of time. Beauty and function; magnificient! ♜🕍🎨🌞

Thank you for your comment. I’m not an architect but from what I saw when I was there their buildings were thoughtfully planned out, like you said water fountains were everywhere, I went to an ancient market in Istanbul and there I saw an old marble fountain with different basins and people were still using them, a man was getting water for his kettle so I can only assume that the water out of the fountain ⛲️ is potable. When I was at the Topkapi palace, it was a very hot day but all I felt was coolness and freshness inside the palace including the Royal bathroom perhaps it’s because of the ceilings are very high? The indoor plumbing was genius, everything was built with marble or stone so they didn’t rust away over time. Unlike European cities at that time, they had indoor plumbing which meant no scooping while European cities were dumping theirs out the window shouting out “gardez l’eau”. Because the Turks are Muslim, cleanliness is part of their religion, I think that was why fountains, public hammam were at every corner, outside of mosques…now a days there’s no need for them anymore as everyone gets out of the house well showered and well groomed. I’m not sure what type of material the pipes were made out of but I saw one in the hammam of the palace (as it was shown from an opening of the wall intentionally) it was made out of metal. I hope I answered some of your doubts but if I learnt of new information regarding the subject matter, I will come back to you as I too am interested in architecture and how things were built in the past. The Ottoman Empire was the first to find the underfloor heating system. In the Süleymaniye Mosque, Mimar Sinan installed a floor heating system using hot water sources. In the meantime, it was the Ottomans who installed the sewer system for the first time in the world and used toilets in the building. At that time, oil lamps were used for light. soot from here could damage the tiles and ceiling decorations. In order to prevent this and to provide air flow, small rooms were made in some rooms so that the ceiling part is invisible when viewed from the outside. Some rooms have fireplaces.

The plumbing came from the Romans, after all Istanbul was the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire for hundreds of years before the Ottoman empire took it over.

You are quite wrong that indoor plumbing was unknown in Europe. King Edward III (1312-1377) had hot and cold running water in his palace at Westminster.

@kareno7848 perhaps King Edward III had the one and only system but I read that indoor plumbing started in the late 18th century in Europe then full blown plumbing in the 19th or late 20th century but outer houses still existed up to the 40s. Thanks for pointing that out, I didn’t know about that.

Very true, the Romans were famous for their aqueducts, some of their aqueducts are still standing tall today like the one in Segovia, truly amazing construction and engineering. However, in Western Europe, people were throwing the contents of their chamber pots out of their windows shouting out “gardez l'eau” or gardyloo meaning watch out for water, outdoor plumbing 🪠 existed way into 60’s…the whole family was still taking 🛀 bath from the same bath water in front of the fire 🔥 in the 60’s. True facts, y’all look it up.

@@whatemmanuellesees In Istanbul, indoor plumbing was only in Sultan palaces or in inhabitations of nobles, not in the houses of common people... in the same way in Italy (Western Europe) only Popes and high nobility could access to a well equipped bathroom. For example Leonardo da Vinci, in the summer of 1490, designed an elegant bathroom for Isabela d'Aragona, duchess of Milan, enclosed in a marble pavilion, lit from above and equipped with a plumbing system. A fun fact: the water used to supply the imperial palaces of Istanbul was from aqueduct of Valens, built in roman times.

European were known to smell and stinky even kings they even washed with urine and some thought water is bad for your health and some just refused to follow muslims habits and wash only for a while until it’s unbearable also many plagues came from there because many even slept with pigs and dogs. Europe is not that ancient compared to rome, egypt and ancient arabia

The natural sunlight comes in through the glass openings up on the ceilings, the architecture was very clever as each area has its own dome ceiling with glass circles to allow sunlight to pour in but the rain cannot get through the glass. The powerful Ottoman Empire was no more in 1923 and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk became the father of the Republic of Turkey 🇹🇷 to make the story short. Descendants are now living around the world, I think the last direct male heir to the throne (if there’s a throne) died just recently.

All of them dispersed to various countries of Europe, some of them returned to Turkey and their surnames are Osmanoğlu. Although some of them are elite people, there are many idiot osmanoguls, there is a man who claims to be a prince, and a woman who calls herself sultan and the poor people who follow her call her sultanim. they have a small world in their own way, but Turkish people don't care about them, most of us don't know they exist. How would you associate a palace that dominates the world with Morocco? I have never heard of then where these palaces are mentioned! This is a palace built in the 1400s, you didn't even have a palace in those years, how do you equate the palace built in 1887 with the palace built in the 1400s, where is your brain? Do you know what that means in 400 years? Back then, most people didn't know what a bathroom was!!

@@elay4435 Morocco empire existed with sultans just because they didn’t make a drama about it and you know nothing about history then no need to spread negativity. Morocco existed for 1000 thousands of years even the first school in the world is made there to teach women and kids quran, language and knowledge. Ottoman had good relationships with Morocco, they could not manage to invade it because it was to powerful. The empire fell after some plague form Europe killed a great sultan who had good relationships with queen Elizabeth from the tudors and almost made huge history since then it gone bad and ottoman never managed to conquer them still because they had their fall little by little until world war and it was over. Public bathroom and hamam existed in all islamic countries because it’s a must to clean yourself before praying and fasting and even the hat ottoman wore was inspired from Morocco which was called Fes a ancient city in Morocco. 📚 ✨ spread positivity and knowledge not just from drama and internet my dear.

What does a fountain do in the middle of the room??😂 Besides I saw this type of thing in Magnificent Century where in their bath scenes, such a vessel was used to fill water in it, and ladies used to sit beside it and take bath with another pot or mug. They had running fricking water in a castle during 1500 something…. like google told me indoor plumbing was “invented” in the 1800s. This is insane lmaoooo pls if anyone knows more about indoor/castle plumbing history please do tell me lol cus this has weirdly fascinated me- like when did we actually start taking baths or showers?? They were the squatty toilet and the bidet (bidet is used to wash after you’re done counting your blessings as they didn’t use or had toilet paper then, I’m assuming about toilet paper here). 90% of houses in Europe have bidet and now we have smart toilet.

😂😂 it’s a squatty toilet so they had to squat I imagine. In Turkey they have both western and the old squatty toilets but all the hotels have western toilet and thank goodness for that as I wouldn’t know how to use a squatty one 😳

Yes there is but just the toilet 🚽 and bidet not the full bath.

You mean it’s dusty in the palace? If yes then I as a visitor thought the palace was very well dusted, maintained, organized and well set up for us to walk through the magnificent palace.

@@whatemmanuellesees Even the most powerful Sultans would be squatting down on a damn flat toilet -- from being an owner of a gold plated throne from where they commanded army of slaves, to being a mere mortal squatting down on a low lying thing just to expel your biological wastes. Must have been a disgusting and disgraceful thing to think of.🤣🤣🤣

Western world much worst in thattime they dont build waste space for the sh1t but it run directly to garden open space. Can u imagine how stink the palace it was

Or emptying their chamber pots straight out of their windows down the streets calling out "Guardez l'eau" meaning "watch out for the water" to warn passers-by down below.
