The Ottoman Empire was one of the most powerful and influential empires in history, spanning over six centuries and three continents. But behind the scenes, there was a group of women who played a crucial role in shaping the fate of the empire and its sultans. These women were the wives and mothers of the sultans, who came from humble origins as slaves or concubines, but rose to become the most influential figures in the palace and the state. This period, known as the Sultanate of Women, lasted from 1533 to 1656, and witnessed the emergence of remarkable women such as Hürrem Sultan, Nurbanu Sultan, Safiye Sultan, Kösem Sultan, and Turhan Sultan.

Like the Ottomans almost all the mothers of Safavid Shahs of Iran(Persia)were also slave origins and the best example for this was Anna Khanum(concubine of Shah Safi I of safavid Empire and mother of shah Abbas ii of safavid Empire)🇮🇷🇹🇷!

The Sultanate of Women continued untill 1715 Also why is Halime missing?
@Sir-Bacon
@Sir-Bacon 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I tend to agree with the group of historians who suggest the sultanate of women was over when Turhan transferred her political power to the grand vizier Koprulu and his descendants in 1656. That is why I did not include Gülnuş Sultan which would push the date to 1715.

@@Sir-Bacon Mahfiruz couldn’t have been Mehmed’s mother because she definitely was the mother of the future Osman II, and he was born less than half a year before Mehmed. The dates simply don’t work out. Mehmed was most likely the oldest child of Kosem based on ambassador writings and the fact that she became Hasek Sultan the year he was born. It would have been very hard for Kosem to have become Haseki without the birth of a viable child. That is partly because many people were skeptical of Ahmed’s ability to father a child.

Yeah, but only the 0,01 percentage could make it to the top. The other slaves were treated like any other slave in the World. Used as much as the masters could. Italians used as slave-soldiers or dying into mines togheter with subsaharian slaves etc. European women used as house slaves or sex slaves. Slavery was the same in every part of the World. Would not very much liked being kidnapped by pirates only to have a 0.01 percentage of possibility of becoming a wife of a rich merchant or a high concubine..... Empires being empires, i know, but i rather like the after human-rights-card World

You are right, there seems to be a romatization going on (not on this channel) but I mean the series Magnificient Empire. For me this topic is horrible. Not to forget all the 'collateral damage'. The people killed in the villages during the slave raids.

I am against the concept of harem as a feminist but the women in harem would get a payment and once they wanna get married, they were able to leave harem so it wasnt as harsh as being a slave

@@dorileondame From where do you get such information. Many of harem woman were still slaves and certainly had no freedom to decide that they get married. Even the daughters of the sultan in modern times had no such freedom. See the biographies of the last sultans.
