Our girl Voodoo is actually a Psychiatric Medical Alert Service Dog! She is an AKC registered CH line gray and white and came from an amazing breeder! I was diagnosed with PTSD, PD, GAD, and a couple other things Voodoo helps me with every day! And yes, Service Dogs can be any breed! I actually like having Voodoo better than a Golden Retriever or Lab because she doesn't care about people wanting to pet her and I never had to recondition that! She just gets in the zone when we're out working and she's been amazing! We also do 6-8 hours a day of training a day and 2-3 days a week of exercise including running, dog parks, hiking, etc.

Service dogs are trained specifically for one person, no matter the disability. People with severe depression, anxiety, PTSD, have Psychiatric Service Dogs. Therapy dogs go visit people in hospitals and such. There is a big difference between the two, Service dogs have public access (they can go anywhere with their handlers) while therapy dogs do not. Therapy dogs can only go in pet friendly places or places they're invited. Service dogs are task trained to mitigate a disabled persons' disability and held to the highest obedience standard, while therapy dogs are not task trained and only held to a fairly high obedience standard. I just wanted to clarify this as you seemed to have the two confused :)

ANY breed can be a service dog. It just has to be: Able to be task-trained to mitigate your disability, And behave appropriately in public situations EXAMPLE: A chihuahua can not be a mobility dog, but can be a psychiatric service dog. And A Pug can not be a Mobility dog, but CAN be a seizure alert dog.

I trained my 5 year old Siberian Husky to walk off-leash in just 1 month. He's super stubborn but you just have to take the time to work around distractions. Here's how I trained him. At first you want your dog to be able to hold a solid heel with any distractions or around anyone. Once your dog has mastered heel on leash, start dropping the leash, giving your dog the feeling of freedom but still keeping them safe. Eventually the dog should walk with a dragged leash just as they would while you are holding their leash. This next part you want to start in a fenced off or indoor area. Once your dog is in a heel position, slowly remove the leash. I had one that slipped over his head, so at first anytime I removed the leash, he would bolt off. If this happens, put your dog in a sit position and ask them to stay. Take off the leash again. Repeat the process until the leash being removed doesn't faze the dog. Now try it at a heel. Start by taking little steps. If your dog starts going faster, go back to perfecting his heel. One thing that is important to teach is for the dog to sit when you stop. My husky had hip dysplasia so it was hard for him, so I just had him lay down. Proof this by going around other people, noises, distractions, and environments. And boom, you have yourself an off leash trained husky. Of course, this method works with all breeds.

Does anyone else hate it when people say Siberian Huskies are not friendly dogs. I also hate it when they say they are dangerous. Its like before you say a dog is dangerous own it. :p

A dog being mean usually is a misunderstanding as to what the dog's place in the family hirarchy is. Getting a trainer may seem expensive at first glance, but it will pay off hugely in quality of life for both of you

Hello, My name is Kendall and my dog named Shadow- he's a pitbull and husky mix. This might sound like a huge favor coming from a stranger but, shadow is in need of a lot of help. He was diagnosed with Glaucoma a few weeks back and had his eye removed from then on the vet sent the eye to Iowa University and received a call back saying they found traces of fungus. I later found out that it's called blastomycosis, it's a fungus that is usually found in moist environments. Our vet believes this infected his eye leading to the glaucoma and with that being said we need to do x-rays to find out of it's in his chest and we really need help raising the money for his treatment. They can either find it in the brain or in the lungs, it is treatable but can take a period of time. I would be so overly appreciated is if you could share Shadow's Story or donate. huskies CAN be off leash and huskies CAN be service dogs etc! i train and owned many service dogs right now i own 3 huskies and 2 german shepherds ALL of them i can take them off the leash in a park with so many distractions and they are fine it all depends on how you train the dog

Well just found this hope you check old stuff every now and then. I wanted to tell you about my husky. She would wake my sister up in middle of the night but then didn't want to go out. We didn't find out until after she passed that my sister had sleep apnea and Sheena was actually waking her up when she stopped breathing.

But, if you where walking in an area that is nowhere near a road, and doesn't have any serious dangers, having them off-leash would not be a problem. I never let my dog off near a road or cars, even though she's good at returning to me, better than a husky most likely.
