A quick range video trying out a Husqvarna 640 Rifle chambered for the 8mm Mauser or 7.92x57mm Mauser round. The Husqvarna models 146, 246 and 640 rifles were all built on 98 Mauser actions sourced from FN in Belgium.
This example has an excellent bore and judging from the wear on the breach face was fired very little. As received it was already drilled and tapped for scope mounts and so one will be mounted on it soon.

Yep, those are generally good products. Any of the older items made in Sweden were well made. One item that they put their name on today are ride-on lawn mowers, a friend of mine sold those and had no end of problems with them.

Yeah, they are not too bad., especially for a first effort. The fixed sights on it are actually pretty good, a nice square topped blade and notch rear. I think a scope will help me and my middle age eyeballs and with one I might be able to improve on the groups a bit.

Good shooting with the iron sights. The 8x57 is under appreciated here in North America. It can do anything & everything the .30-06 with a slightly fatter bullet. Will you reload for this rifle?

The 8x57 just begs to be reloaded. Most once-fired brass can be made to last forever, as the factory loads are quite mild. I shoot my G.I. M98 primarily with mild cast loads of 13 grains of Red Dot pushing a 200 gr. Even with 70 y.o. eyes and the none-to-good sights, can still get my shots in a 5" circle. More than enough to keep the coyotes away.
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
Yep, with mild reloads and occasional annealing brass can have an exceptionally long life, I have 7.62x54R brass with over 25 loadings. Most of my 8mm shooting is done with cast lead bullets out of Lyman mold 323470, I also have the Lee 8mm mold but the Lyman is more accurate. Red dot is a great choice for loads in the 1500 fps range or below, I have done a lot of shooting with the famous 13 grain charge weight. 16 grs of 2400 is also a great load with normal weight bullets, and gives a little more velocity. One Challenge with this rifle is the fixed iron sights, it really does need a scope to get the impact point easily adjustable for usable shooting with a wide range of cast and jacketed loads,
@steveh4962
@steveh4962 Жыл бұрын
@314299 Amen as to those sights! My '98 is an old mismatched "beater" with almost zero finish and a Bubba'd stock. I replaced the barleycorn front sight with a blade intended for the M96 Swede and opened up the rear a bit with a small round file. Now I can see good enough (at age 70) to get my shots within a paper plate at 100 yds.

I like those rifles that Husqvarna produced, they are practical for any North American hunting. The 8mm is an undiscovered round as far as versatility, It is Accurate and powerful, I like the 8mm. the reason why the 30-06 became so popular is it availability as a round, in surplus rifles and national pride as an Americans cartridge. I don't believe the 8mm got a far looking at. Btw, Hahaha.. I think you must be a good shot by just using a sandbag under your hand on a rickety weathered shooting bench (I think you could do better on more solid support) But you did fine. Peace -Dave
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
One of the issues with the 8mm Mauser is also the rather under performing loads traditionally offered by the various North American brands (Federal, Winchester, Remington and the discontinued Dominion/Imperial). These loads with their 170 grain bullets at nominal 2360 fps were a long way behind 30/06 loads in power and performance. The European loads often give much higher performance, for instance S&B loads a 196 grain soft point at 2591 fps. I'm a little rusty with rifle shooting as I have not done a lot of it over the winter and spring, but I was OK with the results all considered.
