100 days I traveled by motorbike through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, then
365 days I traveled in my self-built campervan from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, then
365 days I traveled with this van through Iran and Pakistan, then
180 days I built an off-grid log cabin in the woods in Spain, then
180 days I restored an old sailboat in Guatemala, then
180 days I traveled with this sailboat from Guatemala to Honduras, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and the Dominican Republic

What an amazing and marvelous tool the internet is, to pass information, see and learn almost anything at the tip of your fingers. I’m at the dinghy stage, so now I’d pausing your lessons over and over and taking notes. Never too old to learn or do anything. Thanks Dutch Seaman! Fair winds!

Thank you Javier, I added a few addings in the description of the video. Take those with you too. A good book is The Complete Yaghtmaster by Tom Cuncliffe. It's just a little hard to understand sometimes with all the terms. But it's a good bundle of all answers. I only disagree about the normal sail vs. roll furl mainsail :). All the best, Huub

Yes, me too. Pausing over & over. Partly it's his accent, but 2 or 3 viewings I'll get used to it. Plus he talks so fast. Should talk slow & pause after each statement, so the meaning sinks in. It's great. Big thanks to the video teacher!

I learned in 20 minutes what I couldn’t learn in 2 years fallowing over 30 sailing channels. You nailed it. Everyone else show us how to repair a broken head, but nobody tells how to actually “sail” a sailboat. Thank you so much. 👍👍👍

Actually sailing's very relaxing unless you're racing. Look for a local sailing club if you'd like to try. The American Sailing Association is associated with good schools and clubs if you're in the U.S. There are schools and clubs world over.

Great job! The only thing I would say is when leaving the slip, put the bow line on the bow vs tieing it to the lifeline because IF (when) it comes untied it will go straight into the prop. One way to avoid that is to make sure it is always a couple of feet short of reaching the prop but hey, it's better to place it under the lifeline and on the foredeck (quick coil of course :-)

I feel confident that if someone watched this 5 to 10 times, they would have most if not all of the terminology down PAT. (who is this PAT person anyway...Ü) BRAVO! WELL DONE! PEACE OUT! Nautical terms existed well before sailing was a pleasure activity, and they exist so that people know specifically what you mean when it comes time to refit the boat, or change rigging mid-sail. They also exist so that instead of spending an entire sentence to describe a manoeuvre, or a component, you just use a word. It's unambiguous and fast.

Thank you for posting this video. I'd like to see more sailing for beginners. I'm 45 years old, and I want to buy a boat and sail away. You are inspiring to me. You saw what you wanted and you went for it. My only problem is the I live in the mountains of northeast Georgia. I have to learn to sail in a lake. Once I get certified, I'm buying my forever boat and hitting the 7 seas. Thank you again. I look forward to seeing your new videos.

Huub, this is a brilliant video, really well made and edited! We can appreciate how many hours work it must have taken you to put this together. [not to mention the loss of your drone...] The saying, 'give, and you will receive' springs to mind: you will reap the rewards of this video for years to come (and rightly so!) Fair winds! Chris & Rossella 👍

Hey Chris and Rossella, thanks so much for your comment! Yeah it was quite a shot list. I made it out of frustration that it took others so long to teach me something that really isn’t so hard to at least learn the basics. Fair winds and all the best! Huub

I think they call it the "Air Oar"? As in "Hang the bedsheets on the air oar".

Hoi Huub. Very good video. The reason why a rope turns into a line while onboard ( I am actually talking about all the specific vocabulary used on a boat) is that you have to make sure that any (new) crew member from anywhere uses the same word for every different thing on the boat. Being dutch this is not a big problem because this language is not spoken in so many regions. But take Spanish for instance. There are dozens of different words for rope depending if you come from Spain, Chile, Mexico or wherever . In other words, on board there should be no room for doubts or misundertandings . In the very beginng I also had the idea that sailing people were kind of snobish but after a while I understood that using a common vocabulary is a must. Vriendelijke groeten uit Montevideo, Uruguay
