Just a word to the wise: when cutting into a ceiling from below, be weary of using a sawzall. There might be wires hanging right above that would prove to be an expensive fix. I like using a dremel or a handheld drywall saw.

Yeah, I would never cut into ceiling without looking into the space behind if at all possible.

what size was the actual cut and what size is the plenum?is that tape regular aluminum tape or is it rated for sealing. What do you put around the vent to prevent infiltration and do the screws line up nicely with the 2x4 frame you made when you screw in your rerun grille.

Have a 2 story house with no return air downstairs. It's always much cooler upstairs and warmer downstairs during summertime. My upstairs return air is located right above my living room downstairs. Would it be ideal to make a hole right below the return air from downstairs in my living room and make it into a return air?

My filter is in the furnace in the attic. It is really hard to get up there not to mention dangerous. To further the difficulty I have to contortion thru this 1/2 door to get to the furnace. I am not going to continue to do this. Can I put a filter in my house at the return and take out the one in the furnace? Thanks

I noticed that after you cut the circular hole 🕳 in the sheet metal, then installed the tube on top, you chose not to seal the fitting with any type of cement sealer or tape this likely leaving air gaps in the unsealed connection between the tube and the box. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Nice video! I was wondering if it was ok to move a return about 4 feet up? Mine is currently a 20x30 on the floor and i wanted to make a laundry hamper storage box there. Is it ok to move it up and install a sealed "laundry box" under it?
@StephenRardon
@StephenRardon 6 жыл бұрын
The most significant question to answer is whether you will still have the same volume of air if you relocate the grille. Will the size of the duct coming from the grille be reduced by moving it? If you are not able to maintain the same volume then no, you shouldn’t move it.

I have two ceiling return air vents. One on the main level and the other on the 2nd level. There were no air filters in neither of them when I moved in. The way it's built, it seems if I did put air filters in them, the air filters would just be resting on top of the grill. So my question is, do all return air vents need air filters?
@StephenRardon

Not all return grilles are designed to have filters.

Can someone please explain why all these homes have returns on the ceiling? I mean, why are you sending your "good air" (cool in summer, warm in winter) through the return?? From what I understood, returns should always be at the floor level so that the "bad air" (warm in summer, cold in winter) can go through the central air system to be adjusted to proper temps.
@StephenRardon
@StephenRardon 3 жыл бұрын
If you don’t have room under the floor then attic is your only option.

Ours run under the floor, our back bedrooms did not have good air flow so we added one in the ceiling, in each bedroom ....Now my house smells of Nasty Cigarettes....Could it be because there was nicotine in the drywall? No one has been able to answer my question and How do I get rid of this rancid smell.....crying
@StephenRardon
@StephenRardon 6 жыл бұрын
I’d lean toward the ducting not being well sealed. You saying that the supply runs in the floor so you added return in the ceiling?
@christygunter1941
@christygunter1941 6 жыл бұрын
Stephen Rardon My son-in-law checked it...it's sealed, and we installed new duct in the attic that runs to the 2 new air vents in the bedrooms. The house never smelled of cig smoke before that.
@StephenRardon
@StephenRardon 6 жыл бұрын
There has got to be something causing it and unless there are cigarette butts in the duct it’s coming from somewhere. One way to prove no leakage is to duct test with smoke to see where it leaks.
@hostileaks4495

@@christygunter1941 it's probably your 15 year old smoking in his room and now the return is sucking it thru the house instead of high pressure in the room pushing the smoke out of a window.
