In this video I walk through the settings I used on the Tenergy T180 hobby charger to recondition and measure the capacity of each module. This was paramount in determining the weakest modules that needed replacing.

Ive been using other chargers and methods (you can see some of them on my videos) but really wanted to upgrade to a charger with automatic functions like this one with 4X capabilities. The problem is, apparently everyone else wants the 4X chargers too so they are constantly out of stock. This seems to have all the automatic charge+discharge cycle capabilities I would want I can just buy multiple chargers and plug them into a power strip. Thanks for sharing your great step by step instructions for the settings so I dont have to try and figure out another new charger with chinese instructions. I will certainly use your affiliate link, you more than earned the tiny commission amazon gives. I will give ya a shout out in my first video featuring the T180.

As everyone else has said, thank you very much for your informative and helpful videos. Question and problem: I have been using the Tenergy T180 to recondition my 2006 Prius HV battery modules, one at a time, exactly how you instruct in this video. I used the exact same settings. Everything was going great until block 7, then for some reason when I was taking one of the clips off (I don't know whether positive or negative), there was a spark from, I assume, it touching something. When I attached the clips to the next module & tried to start the T180, the display came up with "ERROR, process interrupted". It says and does the same thing with any other module I attach the clips to. I just called the Tenergy company and asked them about it to see if there's a way to reset the T180. I told them about the error display and they said that it is something internal that has gone wrong, and there is no way to reset it. The representative asked what I had been using the T180 for and I told him to recondition my Prius HV battery modules, one at a time. They said it was not "heavy duty enough for that", and that it wasn't built to recondition Prius batteries. And so in essence, their 12 month warranty might not cover this (I have only had the T180 about 1 month.) Whaaaat? Have you or anyone had this same kind of error code? What did you do about it? What are your thoughts about the T180 not being heavy duty enough to recondition each module? (The company rep. that I talked to said that the discharging puts too much strain on the T180.)

I bought this charger. It works okay. I contacted the manufacture and they said the charger can go up to 5amps discharge but most likely on a 7.2 volt battery it will not draw 5amps. @H-EV Tech Thank you for the great videos on this subject. I'm reconditioning a highlander/rx400h battery and I started with the worst module as determined by the load test (lost 7.54V). The capacity is starting to increase: 5052ah on 1st D-chrg, then 5198ah on D-chrg 2. I'm not hopeful that this module will come back, but here is my question for you: If I get a module to come back from the dead, what is the expectation that it will be OK for use in the pack going forward? What caused the modules to fail in the first place? Heat? I guess I'm wondering what is considered a safe module to use?

Based on some of the below comments, it seems that the charging/discharging cycles should either allow for more of a break in between charging or perhaps a fan should be set up to keep the individual cells cool during the process. What do you observe as far as temperature is concerned on each cell? What is the max temp a cell should see before damage occurs? Would it help to put a temperature sensor in each cell to monitor the temperature during charging? Have you done this, and If so, please advise your technique. Thank you.

Subsequent charge cycles read between 50 and 150 mAh of charge and discharge. Any suggestions? It's not highlighted so it kind of tricks you into thinking that it's not an option. Tap on that and it'll let you go through each cycle to see what the charge/discharge numbers are. @@cory5233 The answer is that the T180 is a product you just have to blindly trust. The overcharge limiter (setting max mAh pushed into the battery) straight up does nothing. You can use peak voltage, but for NiCd sticks you shouldn't. Just have to trust it to do its thing. I dropped the product and moved to a different one called the UltraPower UP6 charger and I bought the external discharger because the discharge time on the T180 was abysmal-talking all night just to do one discharge cycle. However I never got to use it because a friend of mine found 2 CADEX units which can parallel 4 batteries at once each with 150W of power or something. That thing kicked ass and I was able to cycle a battery in less than 3 hours. I gave all my batteries 3 cycles each and then did my best to balance them and now my car runs fine. No codes, good mileage. Hope that helps.

I believe I remember reading somewhere that the Module with the lowest capacity will be the one that limits how much Charge/discharge (the perverbial weak link) you have during installed use in the vehicle therefore you would want to replace the lowest capacity module you have with a better one till you get them all as close to the few higher capacity cells in your pack. That would mean no real pass/fail #s just a pack with only a 200mah variation would be much more desirable than a pack with a 500mah variation.

So I bought 2 of these and frankly I would not do it again. I set up the charge-discharge cycle to end the discharge at 6 volts. Neither of my T180s will go down to 6 volts on the discharge. They always stop somewhere in the low 7s. I have a couple year old Revlonix Powerlab8, that I used for bottom balancing LIPO4 batteries but I could not remember how to set up a custom profile. However, I do remember that when I set it to discharge a cell down to 2.65 volts, that is exactly where it stopped the discharge cycle. I would not recommend the Tenergy T180 for proper reconditioning of the Prius cells. Doing the process helps but unless you can dump all the energy down to the lowest level, the memory effect remains.

On discharge it shows 0. At first I thought I had things connected wrong. I finally hard soldered the alligator clip wires to the "octopus cable" leads just to be sure that the connection was sound. First thing I would verify would be the voltage the charger is detecting vs the actual voltage at the module terminals. Use a multimeter to confirm those voltages are the exact same + or - 0.05v. If they are not the same there is something amiss with the connection or wires that is confusing the charger into thinking the battery is charged or discharged while it isn't.

@@HEVTech1 Do this if you're having the issue. I suspected my wires may have been too small to handle the capacity when the insulation melted on the recommended Alligator clips. I also had voltage readings of up to 14 V on the cells via the charger. The multimeter confirmed that the voltage readings were wrong. Thicker wires leading from the chargers octopus cable to the battery terminals brought the charger's reading to within 0.4 V of the multimeter once everything was at operating temperature. That's still a bigger difference than I'd like to see, but I don't have a car so I can't do much about it.

On the T-180 that I tried with, the voltage reported/sensed on the T-180 is off by quite a bit compared with taking the voltage right at the battery - difference is greatest with more charge/discharge amps specified. For instance. I put a multi-meter on the same terminals as the T180 and when discharging at 3 amps, the voltage difference is as much 0.30v, so a discharge cutoff at 6.00v is actually 6.3v. If I decrease the discharge to voltage to 0.1 amp, the voltage difference is negligible - but that would take forever. So, one could I suppose change the discharge target voltage to 5.7v instead, but that seems risky. When charging, it is the same thing, except T-180 shows higher voltage that the multi-meter. Anyone showing this as well?

What gauge wire are you using? I have noticed with lower quality wires/alligator clamps that you can see differences in the T180 reported voltage and the voltage at the terminals.

@@HEVTech1 Thank you so much for your reply. The cables are pretty thick and never got warm during a 5a charge/discharge. I looked at the construction of where the wire is crimpled to the alligator clip, and discovered that it may be a weak link, as it is isn't crimped well. Since then I've put the battery back in the Prius, but I'll try it again soon.

What did you do about this? Mine is exactly the same. Discharging to 5.7 gets me around 6v.

Hi there nice video and I do have one of these chargers.. what I don't understand is unless you're monitoring the discharge cycle to see what your amp hour capacity is it does not save that information I thought that this unit had memory and saved the cycles, based on your inputs to your spreadsheet...so when you put your figures of each cycle into your spreadsheet were you monitoring this the whole time even though it takes hours and hours... My question is how did you know what your discharge amp hour capacity was for each one since the cycle times seem to vary... Or is this related to having to leave the selection highlighted on the (cycle amount of times mode) example 5 times cycle for used batteries... Thank you

Correct you leave the cycle count highlighted when you start the cycling process. I have no idea why it functions that way but it does. I found a couple of worn cells I could use to demonstrate this in a part two as this is a common question I've gotten a few times.

I know this is 5 months out. When you go through the cycles, you can look at the charge/discharge cycle by tapping the word 'cycle' (or whatever word is between stop and graph). It's not highlighted so it kind of tricks you into thinking that it's not an option. Tap on that and it'll let you go through each cycle to see what the charge/discharge numbers are. I've only tried it with the cycle number highlighted before you start as H-EV Tech as stated in the video. Hope that helps.

i haven't tried this but an idea. If you hook up 7 battires parallel and set the capacity 6500 times 7=45,500. This way you can charge/discharge 7 battries at a times. What do you think? Let me know before i blew up something like a mad professor. I think max spec for capacity is 50,000 for this device.

Its sound logic, but in practice it won't work as well as you think. Ex. If you have one bad module it would throw off the charge/discharge cycles and estimated capacity for the other 6.

@@HEVTech1 but once you recondition every single one then you go back to balance them all by charging them all at the same time and use the charge setting what does the 'stage' selection indicate on the t-180 and is important?

I've read that the benefits of reconditioning are quite fleeting, and long-term, the reconditioned battery is barely better than it was before. Is that what you have seen?

I have had my battery reconditioned as it discharged very fast and charged very fast when braking. It was done by a professional I think he did 3xcycles on any bad cells, I believe it us working well better over 1 year later. It cost me $500 tho. Fuel efficiency stable at 24km for 2011 Prius 140000km

Ok so I called the tenergy company and I asked, when its in cycling and we see "{STAGE CC}" that means its in Charge Capacity and the other after it switch to {'STAGE DC} that means its in Discharge Capacity cycle mode.... lol...nothing to worry about.

After doing this for the last 2 weeks, I can say, this specific charger does not work on "Cycle" mode. It just ignores your settings and decides to stop discharging seemingly randomly. Charging and discharging manually works fine. It's just going to take forever.

Welcome to the world of novice prius battery charging. If you follow these instructions on individual cells with no temperature monitoring and no external cooling . The outcome will be cooked cells. A prius only uses the cells at 40%-70% region during normal operation of the hybrid vehicle. This obviously never fully discharges or charges a cell for good reason it will quickly kill the cells. A property maintained cleaned battery is capable of lasting the predicted 21-23 life of an average Toyota . Cycling old cells in this manor ( 5 cycles) will generate too much excess heat and irrevocably damage most cells or at the very least start the process which will then kill the battery when in the car. Reason being you do not ever treat a prius cell like a standard nimh cell for a toy or model. These cells are intended to max out the cells and kill then in 100 cycles . A prius can cycle the nimh that many times in a day ( 40/70 DOD RULE ) not 0/100 DOD AS ABOVE. The difficulty with these cells is detecting the vdelta component of the cell at full charge which it is not designed todo in reality ( 70% SOC max ) . The cell needs to be charged at least 1C in order to successfully detect the small
