Gary was a very important character to Ash's Journey in the Pokemon anime. He was his very first rival and someone who taught him many lessons along the way. But at the end of the Johto League, Gary tells Ash that instead of becoming a Pokemon Master, he wishes to go the route of being a Pokemon Researcher instead of the Viridian City Pokemon Gym Leader like his counterpart Blue. Now besides the fact that he's Professor Oak's Grandson... Why did Gary make this sudden change in career? Well... It seems the change wasn't actually all that sudden!

I would of loved Gary as a professor, now I want Daisy to be the new professor for Kanto but an aid frist in sinnoh like Sonia did. Also want Daisy to do contest as well in sinnoh since she likes them according to her fame checker in frlg and it would be cool if her pokemon was a Clefairy. The reason I personally didn't like blue as a gym leader is because he was not a type specialist I could see him as a normal type gym leader with ratacate, Eevee and pigeotto to name a few.

Gary in the anime showed signs that he was perfect for the job of being a researcher. In the season one episode Dig Those Diglett, Gary talked about how fast a Diglett can pop in and out of a hole. That’s not a piece of knowledge that trainers know on the fly without using a Pokédex. Gary was gaining knowledge along with battling throughout the earlier series. And when he showed up in Sinnoh, he was already doing research on some fossil Pokémon and helped Ash with his Gliscor. This all proves that Gary was destined to because a researcher like Prof. Oak.

What's funny is that Giovanni was supposed to be an Elite Four Member. So instead, Agatha, an Elite Four Member, takes over Giovanni's gym.

I always hated how Gary /Blue was written so different than each other. Red battled Blue *often* in Kanto while Gary basically avoided Ash... Just like Giovanni!

Wouldn't it be funny if they finally did give Gary that spot as Gym Leader, but ON TOP of being a researcher too? (The anime has shown that people can have multiple titles, like with Kukui) They had Blue act as a mentor towards the new trainers in "Let's Go", I could see the same done with Gary. Since him and Ash are likely to battle again if he returns, the Viridian Gym would be the appropriate spot for it. (Could get that Umbreon vs. Pikachu battle people have been wanting)

Although it’s established that Gary and ash used to be friends Episode 1 of the series made it seem like they had met for the first time cuz Gary says You must be ash Maybe the friendship was added in later and that meeting was retconned or it’s just a dub thing

A dub thing, the Japanese version had him greet Ash with familiarity. (Both versions do mention them knowing each other since they were younger though)

I imagine that they'll probably pull from Fanfictions. In some fanfics I've seen the sadly only one shot character Giselle from Episode 9: The School of Hard Knocks is made the new Viridian City Gym Leader. Giselle being a Ground Type Specialist is mostly based off of how she expertly used two Ground Type Pokémon in her debut/sadly only episode. If the writers of the anime pull from fanfics, then Giselle could make a return as the new Viridian Gym Leader.

Maybe it was because of his Raticate? You know, the one where the popular theory is that he died, which might have turned him off of battling? Well, either that, or maybe he wanted to continue his grandfather's work Also, ngl, I was pretty shooketh when I saw the title and discovered Gary gave up battling, since I haven't kept up with the anime in a long time I'm happy to hear he got major character development

That theory is more associated with his game counterpart, Gary in the anime isn't confirmed to have a Raticate. (Ironically, Ash did have one. Albeit temporarily from a trade)

I wouldn’t it be badass if Gary becomes the Viridian City Gym Leader? Because it would be really cool if you think about it. Something I would like to see because Gary now doesn’t seem to do much and he’s an assistant for the Sinnoh region’s professor. Also I think it’s funny in the games that Blue is a Gym leader when he’s stronger than the Johto Champion, Lance. I think they should’ve made him an elite 4 member and then make Red the champion, that would’ve made more sense imo. Especially since in Alola they’re both traveling together as legendary Pokémon trainers. So maybe he did give up being a Gym Leader and travels with Red? Who knows they should explore Kanto again with those adult versions.

I'm currently waiting to watch Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl, although I finished watching the Hoenn League and the Battle Frontier, Ash Ketchum may not have won the Johto League, but he defeated Gary Oak before he lost, Gary Oak felt convinced to have Ash Ketchum learn to overcome his own immaturity, Ash Ketchum must learn to accept defeat during Pokémon Battles, only then will Gary Oak believe that Ash Ketchum is a worthy rival to battle against, so until then, Gary Oak stops being a Pokémon Trainer and becomes a Pokémon Researcher like his grandpa.

Rumor has it that ash died and is in a time loop after getting shocked by Pikachu in the beginning of the season. Gary noticed that his friend died so he changed his ways. Ash doesn't age because he is dead. And Pikachu and ash are forever companions as they got buried together
