Oh my goodness, what a great video and beautiful place you have. These are one of my favorite flowers and I have gotten starts from my moms. I am in northern Minnesota and have found the deer that we love to watch daily, love to eat the buds from the hydrangeas. So now we have to figure out how to deter the deer till the plants get bigger. Thank you for some great information. I will be coming back a lot to get advice from your videos.
@KellyLehman

Hey Kelly, you just gave me a great idea for a video on how to deter deer from newly budding hydrangeas . Here are some tips for now ... hang Irish Spring soap near the plants . the deer don't like the scent of perfumed soaps , play a solar powered radio softly near plants during the time of day they usually graze on your plants so they think people are there , spray a deer repellent on the leaves and buds . good luck . Thank you for the inspiration Kelly ! 😁❤️

I got my first hydrangea in 2019 and have become obsessed with them! I added 5 more last year & have plans for 8 more this year in my yard. Hi Michelle, I plan on making a hydrangea propagation video soon. The way I do it is to find a stem close to the soil and dead head the bloom . I bend the branch until I can cover it with soil and then put a brick or rock to hold it in place . After a few weeks I usually notice that it has started to grow roots . There are lots of propagation methods though . Happy hydrangea gardening 🌸👏😊

No Lace Caps? I live in CT and have had horrible luck with Hydrangea's. Had 5....only ever had blooms on 1. That and the deer like them too much. Had to spray them constantly to keep the deer off of them. Finally this year my remaining 3 ALL did not come back so no more Hydrangeas for this guy. Ironically I stumbled across your videos....I actually work for Hyundai and although I live in CT, the Regional Office I work out of is in Jamesburg. Been going there for 20 years and never knew your farm existed. Been working from home since March but if I ever do get back to the Regional office in temperate weather I will swing by to check your farm out. Enjoy the video's and tips.

@@KellyLehman I tried that years ago and it was somewhat effective. Spraying is easier as if you have border plantings in many areas of the yard....that's a lot of soap to hang!!! Way easier to spray. Lacecaps are what got me started wanting to have some Hydrangea's. I was out riding my bicycle near the shore and saw two huge Lacecaps and almost immediately went out and bought a couple. Never bloomed once and in this the mildest of winters....neither came back (and I had had them for about 8 years.)

I'm able to move them in areas where they will thrive due to being in pots. that's pretty much all I do, other than showing them love as I water them😇💗 going to plant some little limes for next year as I add garden beds along the side of my home.🤗🤗

You have the most Amazing hydrangeas Kelly!😍. I would like to know what is the best method to change pink hydrangeas to blue or to purple? Also how long does it take for hydrangeas to change color and when is the best time to apply it? My soil is alkaline so all my hydrangeas are pink. Thank you for your advice on how to care for hydrangeas 😘💜💙💜
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Isabel. Here is some information on how to change the color . I also have a few products listed in my Amazon shop that will change the color look under my fertilizer lists once you are in my page 😊🌸 Amazon.com/shop/kellylehman 🌸 How do you control hydrangea color? Hydrangeas are unique in that you can control their color. But keep in mind, not all hydrangea types are capable of color adjustments. Bigleaf hydrangeas, H. macrophylla, react to changes in soil pH. A low soil pH allows hydrangeas to absorb aluminum, which turns the flowers a beautiful blue color. To increase blue hydrangea flowers, lower your soil pH by adding sulfur or peat moss to the soil. You can also add additional aluminum sulfate to your soil throughout the growing season. Pink and red flowers shine when you add ground limestone to increase the pH. A soil pH test can help you accurately adjust your hydrangea color. Avoid pH levels above 7.5 to prevent damage to the plant. No matter what adjustments you’ve made, all hydrangeas will naturally fade in the fall. Don’t worry - the plant will showcase fresh, colorful blooms again in the spring. I have a 1-gallon endless hydrangea pot that I bought in February when it was in its dormant stage and there were zero leaves on it. Now it has some leaves and it had one bouquet of a..... white flower with a skyblue middle circle (not sure what to call this part)... My soil acidity has been between 5 and 6. I kept adding the acidic fertilizer once a month. Do you think I actually got an endless summer hydrangea from the seller??? I picked some of the flowers and mixed it into a bouquet of white anabelle hydrangea that I got as a gift... The flower petals looked the same...

I don't want to sound too ignorant, but after watching the video I understand what the differences are in how to care for the different types of hydrangeas that you showed, however I still don't know how to tell the differences between the hydrangeas just by looking at them. Is the the color that tells indicates the difference, or something else? And how many different colors are there?

Hi Dan , actually this is a super hydrangea question that i get asked often so you are in good company . There are tons of different varieties of hydrangea in loads of different colors . If you type in the word hydrangea into the google of safari search bar and then select images , you will start seeing all the different varieties available and what their names are . I made a video showing the hydrangea varieties i grow here on my flower farm and list the names of each in this video Hope this helps to unravel the hydrangea name mystery . Hi Emily, i like to cut my Limelights when they are in the semi dried stage in fall . I get the longest vase life from them that way . I don't usually prune back my limelights just a deadheading in early spring . You can however prune them back in late winter or early spring . The blooms come in on new growth .

Summer is always sad in my garden. May I ask what to use to cover hydrangeas or a watering routine, or anything that you would provide that will not make them burnt. I am afraid to put something over them because it might be to hot for them. Anything to make them beautiful all year. Thanks!🌺

Hey there Ezekiel, I have a similar issues with a few of my Endless Summer that I planted in an area that does not get enough afternoon shade . If this happens to your hydrangea every year the best move is probably to wait u til fall and transplant it to an area that gets morning sun and afternoon shade . For now , make sure to deep root water your hydrangea at the base in the mornings . Don’t over head water or the leaves could get funky and don’t overwater . Check to see when the soil feels dry and then water . If the soil is moist , don’t water. You can also consider planting another taller plant such as a Limelight hydrangea that can tolerate full sun near it and place it in a spot that will provide the original hydrangea with afternoon shade . You can also consider placing a collapsible pop up sun blocker like people use at the beach for the super hot days . Hope these tips helped 🌸🌸

Hi I'm watching from Shrewsbury (Midlands), England. I have a lace cap hydrangea but I dont know the name. (I have photos), it is flowereing really well this summer. However, as I have it screaning my waterbutt on the patio it is quite shaded which is causing it to grow tall which is leaving it bare + woody underneath. I dont know how/when to prune so I get more blooms next year? It is pot grown, has large pink sterile flowers around the edges and delicate tiny pink flowers in the centre on dark stems with light green leaves. 🌺🙂
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 4 жыл бұрын
Since your blooms come in on old wood, make sure you don’t prune back after August or don’t prune back at all so you don’t risk cutting off next years blossoms . It sounds like your hydrangea is doing nicely since it is flowering really well. If you wanted to try to prune it back to seeing this gets rid of the Woody bare ness you see, I would prune back 1/3 of the plant before August so the plant has a chance to establish next years blooms . Happy hydrangea growing 😁

What do you do to keep your Limelights (or any hydrangea) from getting too leggy? I have a beautiful hedge of Limelights, about 20 feet long. They are about 3 to 4 years old. Last year and this year, they bloomed beautifully, lots of large, gorgeous flower cones, but they flop in storms and don't always perk back up. I'm thinking of cutting them back by half so they will fill out. Would you suggest this? Thanks!
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 3 жыл бұрын
I would cut back the floppy stems from this year ( wait until late winter to do this or early spring ) I would also keep the upright branches that look good in place . Any new stems that grow from where you primed should be long and will most likely give you giant flower heads in summer . However , these are the ones that get zonked by the heavy rain and flop. The buds that will grow closer to the unprinted branches should be smaller and my not flop as much . Good luck 👍🍀

Hello Kelly, I'm so glad I found your page. You helped me realize that I have endless summer Hydrangea bushes. I planted my bushes about 4 years ago, and I didn't know what I was doing, as I am new to gardening. As I said, I planted three bushes four years ago. Sadly, I've only seen maybe six flowers in the four years since planting. This year 2020 I"ve seen nothing. I will say that I've been cutting them back each year, so maybe I have ruined them. My question for you is what do I do to get a lush bloom of flowers. I do have some of the food that changes the acidic level of the soil. I've been using that this summer, but nothing has happened. No flowers this year. I live in Minnesota. Please help! What can I do as the summer is closing to possibly have some flowers next spring/summer? Michelle

I can't find anything online about partial blooms turning into leaves - It gets filtered sun throughout the day, right behind another 8x8 hydrangea and 30x30 azalea, watered daily with a soaker hose, 3 gallon planted 2 weeks ago, zone 6a
