Omg in my classes I made a heart exactly like that. I made a brooch. The hydraulic press was bigger than the ones you are talking. I didn’t know that existed small scale. Thank for the information. ❤😊

Hadnt thought of this type of work for my press, I'll have to give it a try once I finish building mine. Also, Color is specific when it comes to urethane, it shows the hardness durometer or shore of the given piece by just looking at it. Alternatively if you dont want the tabs on cut out pieces you could look into two piece upper and lower punch sets, not sure how common they are or expensive but they would solve that problem if anyone has the money to burn.

The color is only specific To a particular maker perhaps. I have 95 duro in red, black and clear, all made by different makers. I have 65 and 95 in the same color.

This is absolutely fabulous information and demonstrations! I can see that the creative possibilities are endless. However, I do believe that once you begin to use machines to make your metal jewelry, you do leave the more artistic world of handmade metal smithed items. As with the Navajos, the value per item does go down on sales price! Hand metal smithing is a tremendous skill which can take years to craft. I suppose today most of the retail market is looking for nice, and inexpensive jewelry, as opposed to the 1970s. So these machines can make beautiful sellers. However, I do feel that continuing to hone your hand metal smithing skills is vitally important to be a true artist!

I totally agree. When I teach my students I tell them of the importance of being able to do these same things by hand, the traditional way. However, most of the population no longer has an appreciation for hand wrought art and they want the look with a smaller price tag and these tools allow for that to happen. But in my mind, nothing beats the feeling of finishing a piece by hand.

No sadly. It will damage your die and you won't get a good cut out.

This is super helpful, Melissa; thank you! Is there any way to make an anticlastic or synclastic bangle with a hydraulic press, or only cuffs? I made a wire bracelet last year in a class with 5 wires done in a ripply die, but that would not work the same way at all with sheet metal.

@MelissaMuir

It is a bit of a process. I would suggest taking a class on that. Jayne Redmon has some great workshops on creating these. They aren't as simple as you would hope. But with a bit of practice, they are great to have.
