I have a tremendous respect for pressure. Maintaining a constant state of mental discomfort around pressurized systems is a good way to prevent complacency. 10,000 PSI is an almost unfathomable fluid pressure. Stay vigilant, Keith!

It might be useful to put a jute bag of sand under the press instead of a wooden board. That will be able to absorb most of the parts that are squeezed out of something.

Keith, Separate from your normal fix it up style video I don't know where else to send this comment. Mate, I follow your channel from Australia. Been a fan for a while. A long while. It's amazing to see your weight loss. It was rather concerning the last few years and you've spent a great deal of time working on yourself and I think that's amazing. I'm a huge gym junkie and it saved my life. I, like you, was pretty heavy and I have dropped the weight and it's changed my life. Long story short your weight loss has not been unnoticed and I think you might want to mention a few things about it. It's obviously very important and might help others. You should be proud. And you look really healthy and strong. Best of luck mate. Amazing job.

Get a couple of pieces of rail from the railroad (badly worn is ok), mill the tread area flat and bring them to equal height, and they will make ideal support bars for the press. We used these for everything where we needed support blocks.

I retired from a car factory. The paint booth cleaners used a high volume/high pressure water jet to clean the overspray off the walls of the paint booths. It was adjustable up to 10,000 psi. They normally opersated at about 7500 psi. The pipe was 1/2" ID but about 2" OD. Over time the water eroded the standard 90 degree ells and the pipefitters had to replace every standard ell with a long sweep ell to prevent it from happening again. It is amazing what high pressure fluid can do. Keith, please be careful around your press. I was thinking a Lexon screen might be a good idea. Hinge it from the top lip of the C channel at the top of the press. Use a rope and pulley to lower it into place if you ever feel at risk.

The remote pendant is a great option for this press. The exploding V block is exactly the type of danger that presses are capable of. I worked in industry where we had a person killed because a tooling piece ejected from a press, causing blunt force trauma that caused instant death. Great video and great project!

Not gonna lie! When that V block met its demise........I almost jumped off my chair. Having been around a press when gears would shatter (inside a proper scatter shield), the pucker factor is pretty strong whenever you are watching a pressing operation, even if it is a recorded video on a monitor screen.

We had a 50 ton press in our automotive machine shop. My father was straightening a shaft that he was not aware had been hardened. It broke in two and a piece of it came out of the press and broke his hand. Being able to get a distance from the press while pressing is a good thing, That is a whole lot faster than a hand pump.

A few years ago, I was at a friend's shop attempting to straighten out some metal target stands on his press. I had them mounted on spacers and was applying pressure when all of a sudden there was a loud bang. When I looked at the press, the metal plate, approximately 3' long was gone! It had apparently sprung, gone down between my legs, bounced off the floor and hit the exhaust on a dragster that was behind me. The "what could have happened to me" thought was off the charts! Standing off to the side when pressing is not a bad idea!

As an 18 year old I remember seeing a 750 ton extrusion press being installed, well, reinstalled. The plumbing was mostly very thick wall tube with an acme thread cut, the ends being true, the threaded bits met a copper washer in the middle of a hefty steel block. A crane made holding the fittings a bit easier. Nothing was delicate. The fun bit was seeing aluminium behave like toothpaste!

Hello Keith. I noticed that when you tightened up your tail peace chuck on a thread tap, that you only used one position on the chuck to tighten the thread tap and it slipped when you tried to run it in to cut threads. If you will use all 3 positions to tighten the chuck. It will hold much better.

I'm glad you're making sure all your components are rated for the pressure your unit is capable of producing. 10,000 psi is no joke. I worked for a hydraulics specialty company for quite a few years, then worked as a maintenance mechanic in a production plant. It was not uncommon to find standard water pipe fittings being used in hydraulic pressure applications. Fortunately, the pressures were relatively low (1100 psi). The potential for a tremendous mess was high. My right index finger got injected with hydraulic oil at 3,000 psi and it's not really a functional finger anymore. High pressure leaks can be extremely dangerous.
@Samalyzer45
@Samalyzer45 11 ай бұрын
I worked with a tech at one company and he lost a finger on a job, when a pinhole leak on a 10,000psi system essentially flayed his finger of most of the flesh. The only thing more dangerous in the high-pressure world is live steam.

Looking good, Keith! Glad you've got the extra long cord for the pendant. You would still have been safe operating from the power pack since the separation of your v-blocks was perpendicular to where you would be standing, but that's still a little too close for comfort. Your shop, your shop practices. No criticism, just want to see you not get hurt. I agree with a previous comment that the bracket for the bigger gauge would be a great place to hang some hearing protection when you're not using the press. As loud as it was on the video, I can only imagine what it was like in person. Still working on my plans for a workshop for when I retire. Out of my price range right now, but I retire in ten years, so it's something to save up for. Still have a little shop envy, though. My little 8 by 24 woodworking shop would fit inside yours several times.

I would rethink your gauge position. I have a 60 ton press myself with the gauge centered in the front of the press over the ram. I watch the gauge all the time to follow what is going on which you will not be able to do with the gauge and work at the same time. This will keep you out of trouble and allow you repeatability on projects that have repeated operations. My two cents. You will love the press!

Wow, that was fun to watch! Good job, you two. I have two "physics nerd" comments; probably not worth the time in a job shop, but perhaps instructive. First, could you find, or even calculate, the stiffness of your parallels? Put an unloaded straight edge on the top and you will get an independent measure of the pressing force. Second, wouldn't you ordinarily want to heat the bent shaft up while or after straightening it? This would anneal the stresses caused by the bending and probably reduce spring-back. I realize that welding on a new layer before cutting the shaft to its original diameter would likely do your annealing anyway.
