Homeowner Scott needed a large stump removed from his landscaping close to his house. We use the 260B Backhoe and new hydraulic thumb on the John Deere 1025R (Johnny) to remove it. Homeowners are often wonder if they should remove a stump or grind it down to below ground level. In this case, removing was the best solution.

When I bought my 1025r I also had the hydraulic thumb added. First job I found it useful for was loading cut up 18 inch long oak logs into the back of my pick up for delivery to a friend who heats with wood. They were pretty heavy and it saved our backs! He still gets to split them.

Because of your videos I went to my local John Deere dealer and ordered me a 2020, 1025r TLB with a 54 inch mower deck and 12 in posthole digger. I can’t wait for it to come in and to start all the projects you do. My girlfriend just perched 34 archers and I have 2 archers and I hope this is enough tractor to do the jobs I have ahead of me lol but from your videos I think I found the right brand of tractor!!!!

Burning Bushes Tim, and for a landscaper like myself, I cringe when I have to remove them. Hopefully my new 1025R will make this kind of task a bit easier! This almost makes me excited about my next tear out and how much easier it’ll be with my 1025r as opposed to a spade and ax. A thumb definitely will be in my future.

Great video. Not sure the expense of the hydraulic thumb would be worth it for me especially since it is not fully independent, (plus I only use my machine for little stuff around the house😊). Also, the departure angle is likely a bit less as it does stick out a couple inches further out than the 260 BH.

Hi Tim. What you are going to find out is that with that narrow bucket the thumb doesn’t let you dig very deep because the thumb is wider than the bucket and hits the sides of your ditch. Mostly the collars for the bucket pin. Hope to see if you have that same problem. Thanks for the great videos. Have a good day.

I know this is an old video but if anyone is thinking of doing this two things...ck to make sure nothing is going under the bush like a gas line, water line or sewer pipe, roots can get wrapped around them. Second put a sheet of plywood up against the house in case you accidentally hit the house either with the backhoe bucket or the bush. I also find it easier to have a hose handy, once the stump is out just spray off the dirt. Sometimes when the dirt is hard I'll also use water to loosen it up before digging.

Tim, I have the same tractor JD2305 with a 260 backhoe. When loading, I lay a pair of 2X6's on the road prior to the loading ramp, which eliminates the hoe from dragging. I wounder what the part number is for the smaller trenching bucket used in the video?

In some towns in southern NJ you could put that stump outside on the curb and the first of the month they come around with a GIANT front end loader with a fancy 4way bucket to pickup and put in the township dump truck. I guess paying 8k a year in property tax has some benefits

I have a mechanical thumb on my MF GC1710 CB65 backhoe from BXPandeded that utilizes the factory mounting system. For the money and lack of independent operation of the thumb itself I prefer to select from the various notches where i'd like to be to know where my grab/pivot point is vs the "dueling" valves of a single function/dual cylinder thumb setup. I really think it takes a full independent thumb to justify the expense and extra plumbing

Looks like it’s working fine. On a small attachment like that’s just one more lever for the thumb that may be in the way. Unless it was factory installed w a foot lever so you wouldn’t have to take your hands off the other levers. We can’t expect that much out of these attachments. Although mine is a larger backhoe attachment it’d be harder for me to reach the release lever on top there. But it is what it is
