Hyperia at Thorpe Park will open as the UK's tallest coaster later this year, stealing the record from The Big One at Pleasure Beach Resort, which has held the record for 30 years. However, will Hyperia be able to cement itself as a British icon, just like its northern counterpart? Which ride was better considering when they were built? I discuss this and more, to find out what has changed in the coaster industry since 1994, and what that means for the UKs newest record breaker.

Back in 1994, the excitement of having the world's tallest roller coaster in the UK was incredible. I remember reading about Magnum XL in the Guinness Book of Records, and thinking -wow - it would be great to ride a roller coaster that high. And then The Big One came to the UK - amazing.

I was at Pleasure Beach yesterday and was thinking about this, personally I don’t think it’s fair to compare Big One and Hyperia given they are 2 completely different rides but can understand people will do it due to the height factors. I’ll personally compare Icon and Hyperia however since they’re both MACK coasters and the track design, restraints, trains, possibly ride experience will be similar if not the same. Overall I’m looking forward to the opening of this ride, good video 👍

Yeah, the comparison is inevitable with the height record. I agree that the two rides probably shouldn't be directly compared, that's why I was trying to focus more on their impact at the time. I'm glad you enjoyed though!

Ecstatic thats its in my local park, if only depth charge would get demolished and replaced with a better water ride then i wouldn't sigh everytime i saw it as i entered the park

Yeah, that whole beach area is a bit out of place, isn't it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the next thing to get replaced in a few years' time

They are two completely different coasters in two completely different eras. A comparison will always be difficult in cases such as this.

I feel like, had B&M offered hyper coasters in 1990, they would’ve built the Big One.

great video. I agree the big one was outdated before it even opened really. like you said nemesis still considerd the best roller coaster in the uk by a lot of people. and that opened in the same year. but hyperia. nothing else really compares to it.

Interesting. I was there for the opening of The Big One, and the hype surrounding at the time it dwarfs the very niche hype for er... hyperia. Im looking forward to riding them both tho

That's fair, I guess the amount of coverage hyperia is getting online is adding to the hype way more than anything that could have been done in 1994

No The Pepsi Max Big One even had a song recorded for it, which got in the Charts. Can't wait to ride Hyperia, but the fact Big One was the biggest in the world at the time means more than being the biggest in the UK now. Also was on Big One is rickety as hell now which imo has made it better 😂

I have just ridden Hyperia.Its amazing one of the best I,ve ever done,Big one is a joke,it needs to be taken down and scrapped.

I don't think ever. Was all gradual. Before Magnum XL200, it's not like you wouldn't have had coasters that were over 100ft... Going from 456ft, to having the AIRTIME hill at over 70ft higher than that.. is just nuts @@coaster_shark
