I picked up Hyperion as a teenager shortly after it was first published. I loved it and had no idea for many years that there were three more books. I absolutely love this series of books. Each book creatively immerses the reader in a richly textured universe filled with wondrous worlds and characters that are easily lovable and hate-able.

Only watched half of this video because I'm only a few hundred pages in the Pax era book. I stumbled onto this series quite by chance and I can't believe I had never heard of it before. This is one of the greatest series of sci-fi books I have ever read.

The whole 4 books are amazing, quite astounding, sometimes you don't want to continue reading because you are on the edge and you just need a cup of hot coffee or a light stroll to organize your mind, I remember that I read the third book until 2 am (non-stop).

I just wish the Shrike stayed as this invincible mega force from the future that was a threat. He turns into the characters bodyguard for the whole last three books. Saddest use of super powerful mystery villain.

That would have required telling a very different story, and personally I loved the story in all four books just as they are.

The Shrike was never a 'villain', at least not in the childish comic-book sense of the term.

@@ehulbert5 That I believe was indeed apparent quite early into the story and most of the readers were aware of Shrike not being a straightforward villain. What I think WAS disapointing was seeing it become a mere plot armor for aenea in book 3 & 4

Great series of books, read them many years ago. I think I enjoyed Ilium and Olympos a bit more, though.

Ilium and Olympos had so much potential, but then the author got bored and just dropped the plot. I really was disappointed by the end, or the lack thereof.

Awesome! I stopped halfway through the video as I am halfway Through Endymion.. was just reading when saw this video drop! Really enjoying reading the cantos. Hope the end explains the plot as I was left a bit disappointed by the ending of the fall of Hyperion. It didn't explain much

What was stunning about Hyperion was that the stories themselves all reached their natural conclusion at the conclusion of the book. I’ve heard enough about the sequels by now to know that reading them would add nothing to the original. I think Dan Simmons may have actually alluded to that in the Poet’s Tale.

I personally think that the first book is the best of the series, since it has both, interesting and believable characters and a very interesting world building. The other books lack the interesting characters, especially Raul as the main character of the last two books is so terribly bland it's hard to be interested in him. The world building remeans great throughout the series and the ending of the last book really left an impact.

@7:15 The Gideon drives didn't enable instantaneous travel between two points in space, just faster than other drives with a significant additional cost.
