I feel I owe you this. I’m a contractor and work on average 65 hours per week. I’m also riddled with adhd, but i love stories. I have over 300 books on audible and am primarily a sf fan. I bought Hyperion on Audible about 2.5 years ago but as you say sf can be overbearing and i couldn’t get past the first chapter without totally drifting. I kept the book because of the reviews and opinions of people i respect. It literally wasn’t until this video that i could break through into the universe. You broke things down for me enough to try again. Because of your commentary i knew enough to keep me engaged just long enough to hit hoyt and the bikura. That sent me. I’m half way through the fall and i sincerely thank you brother.

One of the best character arcs. I really wish she was "part" of the pilgrimage and got her own tale, because Simmons shows that she formed a little rebellion against the Technocore years ago, and waited for the Hyperion pilgrimage to strike. She makes the ultimate sacrifice but she also didn't see the full picture. The Lions and Tigers and Bears is one of the best cosmic horror/divine entities I've come across.

My adoptive grandmother was a hard, cold Norwegian woman. Although she took care of my brother and I on a physical level, I was terrified of her my entire childhood. I often felt misunderstood, disapproved of. After the passing of my adoptive grandfather, she gifted me a paper-back copy of "Endymion". I was a bit perplexed by it at that age of 12 and it sat on my shelf, then boxes, for years. It wasn't until the age of 16 that I cracked it open. My mind exploded and I fell in love with sci-fi. It wasn't until the age of 25 that I realized this was book 3 of a 4 part series. I listened to all 4 books and my appreciation for this series blossomed. I'm now 38, have re-purchased all 4 audiobooks and am having an amazing experience re-discovering the majesty of it all. Fragments of these stories have permeated my adult life, mostly in dreams and drunken conversations. Thank you Dan Simmons. Thank you, Quinn. Thank you Joyce Rhodes... R.I.P., Gram.

The Fall of Hyperion was the peak of this series. Endymion and Rise had some cool ideas as well as my favorite character, Father-Captain De Soya, but I feel those books needed more editing or time in the oven. The whole "romance" between Raul and Aenea was weird at best and creepy af at worst.

Hyperion brought back my joy for sci-fi! In a big way. The only thing I would have touched on is what truly made the first two books: the anticipation of each character's story. I could not get to the next one fast enough. Each one left the reader dripping with anticipation for the next. More than anything that made the book fun- at least a considerable component. I feel like Simmons really dropped the ball concerning the Bikura and the Labyrinths in the last two books. He essentially hand waves their origins and any mystery connecting them to something ancient or unknowable, ruining any potential interest or future story. One of the biggest problems with Endymion and Rise of Endymion is that the answer to every mystery is a sloppy retcon or the technocore. To me, it seemed obvious Simmons just wanted to be done with the entire universe, so answered every lingering question with “It was the boogie man (technocore)” or “(sloppy mental gymnastics backflip and shoving a square peg into a round hole) IT WAS THE VOID AND STUFF”.

Brawne- She represents humanity in the bridge between humans and robotics/technology. Other characters represent the technology side. Martin- represents human suffering but also the boredom of eternal life and disillusionment from technology. Sol - Duty to God vs gods duty to humanity. Kassad- the ethics of warfare. Hoyt- obviously the resurrection and the horror of eternal life. Het- In the end religious technology. I could go on as I am sure you understand but thought I would throw out so.e flavors to add to yours.

Looking at the comments here, it seems to be a somewhat polarizing series. 1:34:40 So, Quinn. I see that you’re the type of guy who likes to nonchalantly flex his singing skills and not even mention it. Good job!

I really loved the Chichatook people on the frozen atmosphere world. I probably spelled their name wrong. It's been a long time since I've read them. Last time I experienced these books was through audio book while driving.

bro i was trying to remember your name or the name of your channel for a couple of weeks, i had too much subs on my original google account to find you, then it finally popped into my head last night, and i watched 3 hours in a few videos last night, but then lately ive been thinking about hyperion and the shrike but i clicked on your videos to see if you had anything new on the shrike or hyperion and to see you have such a huge video recently on it, even live!!! makes me so happy. its my day off and imma go snuggle up in bed and turn the lights off and pull my blackout curtains and listen to this whole stream. bless! also, have you heard of the game "the iron lung" there's an event in it called "the quiet rapture" which, even though its not a long game and not much is explained, itd be so interesting for you to make a video with your thoughts and maybe a theory on it and then let commenters talk about theirs. theres something similar to that on reddit but its really tedious to look through because a lot of the threads only have 2 or 3 comments.

I feel that you misinterpreted Kassad here. He ends up being super dishonerable at the battle of Bresia, but it's not because Moneda manipulated him. The (extremely traumatic) scene where she becomes the Shrike is a representation of how he broke with his own morals, but it's also transcendent. The overtly sexual nature of the scene represents something like a visceral conflict of values. Moneda was always there to guide him, as gets revealed in the end of the series. It's a conflict of the self, against the self. Same kind of dynamic with Lenar and Paul (which Lenar fails miserably). Kassad is ultimately vindicated, but he has to viscerally encounter his own hypocrisy and faithlessness and suffer terribly. It's extremely traumatic for him, but it ends up being worth it in the end. What else is the warriors calling, though?

@@QuinnsIdeas Keep up the good work man 👍 You introduced me to a lot of great stuff I wouldn't have read otherwise. Cheers. Hope your novel does well, the blurb on your channel was really interesting.

After about the 4th read i realized that the shrikes actions change to reflect Kassads journey. In the begining its clearly an emissary of the Core UI. After Kassad kills it in the deep future and becomes the "template" for its consciousness, it starts behaving more erratically, reflecting the ebb and flow of the war in the future.

Really cool to stumble upon the fact that Hyperion cantos very thoroughly encouraged mass effect lol
