The most impressive part about all of this isn't the efficiency. The most impressive part is that you made it from Virginia to NYC and back with no plates, no mirror, a fairly conspicuous car, and did not get pulled over once.

They had a temp tag taped onto the hatch window. Also, some states only require "one mirror that can see directly behind the car for several hundred feet". PA for example, I drove my aero-modded first-gen Legacy around there for years without mirrors and had no issue. (I put the mirrors back on if I had cargo blocking my view out the windows.)

I have a first-gen Insight, and even without overflowing the filler neck, the first few bars of the gas gauge always take notably longer to disappear than they should. I'm an automotive engineer for Honda. I wanted to point out that the tape in the hood added back the drag if not more that you removed from taking the wipers out. Every time a tiny piece of tape moves, it creates a huge vacuum towards the back slowing you down. See if you can get a wind tunnel to test tape positions for better efficiency. Last, the mirrors actually lowered the coefficient, by taking them off you guys added some more drag back. Great try guys 👍.
@al1g8r94
@al1g8r94 Жыл бұрын
Just wondering, how did removing the mirrors add back drag?
@BlueBox777
@BlueBox777 Жыл бұрын
@@al1g8r94 the engineers take for account the vortex created by the different parts of the car, like the mirrors, wipers, badges, etc. That's why the rear wheel is covered to compensate for the vortex created in the front. Removing them, causes the air to distort differently than expected before it reaches the back. Also, tape adds surfaces that makes the wind react in a manner it was not expected, slowing the car down.

I did that for the first month of owning my 2011 Insight, and then I basically settled for having the cruise control do as much as possible. I tend to just follow (at a safe distance) behind lorries on the motorway and it's a bit of fiddling with speeds in the city and on rural roads, but in the end I get about 4.3L/100km and I'm fine with that. I use the heated seats and climate control like a normal person, so I'm sure I could squeeze out that bit more, but I can't be bothered.

Great video, glad to see the Insight getting some appreciation! I have a 2006 manual Insight with 265K on the odo... fantastic car and very much worth the quirks and the maintenance. Keep practicing with that hypermiling thing... you can absolutely get into the mid to high 70s MPG on a stock manual first gen if you learn all the tricks and take it easy! Couple things that weren't mentioned in this video that really help with fuel economy in your Insight: air your tires up to maximum sidewall pressure, it makes a surprisingly big difference in MPG on these cars by further lowering rolling resistance. Also, use lower road speeds (try to stay under 60 MPH) and focus on driving with load (give it less throttle on uphills/more on downhills) to keep in lean burn longer and more frequently. A wideband air-fuel gauge will let you see when you're in lean burn and how far into it you are (or get an OBDC&C for lots more Insight-specific data). Also a couple maintenance things you could do: you were missing some panels under the front bumper that weren't replaced by the Killer3Cyl panel (there should be one in front of each wheel, these are pretty important for aero). It's also worth learning more about your IMA battery and checking up on its health, as these had very rudimentary battery management systems and can go out of balance easily and lose performance even if they still appear to function. For someone who's never driven an Insight before it could be hard to tell this is the case, since you've only ever driven it with the battery in its current condition. There are lots more tips on the Insight Central forums and the community there is extremely helpful- check it out if you haven't already, it is a treasure trove of information.

@davecrupel2817
@davecrupel2817 3 жыл бұрын
@@Vandallolwut The best mileage is accomplished, for the most part, by achieving the highest speed at the lowest RPM. And in the case of a manual, (and some automatics) that is accomplished by holding the lowest, but most maintainable, speed at the highest gear. My '97 Camry's best, on it's automatic 4 speed, is around 40-45 mph. I can manaage around 30mpg holding that speed on flat ground. Which i think is pretty damn good for an old, slightly worn, cast iron engine.
@johno812
@johno812 3 жыл бұрын
I have a 2001 Insight, on a long trip 60 mph seems to give the best MPG. When I drove slower, the engine bogs down too much in 5th gear and the mpg suffers. So if they were to go 50mpg to 65mpg using, pulse and glide when they can’t draft; then you need to get right up on the truck to draft. You are helping his mpg as well. They could have easily broken 100mpg on the whole trip. Just traveling at 60mpg with no drafting they could have done 80mpg. (They should have finished tuning up the engine and battery). Fuel injector cleaner and re-balancing the cells (which is really easy). Easier than changing the oil or spark plugs.
@johno812
@johno812 3 жыл бұрын
Also, once the IMA battery is over 75%, you can use the AC going down hill and stay comfortable while going over 100 mpg. However, they did have the fuel cell; so they HAD to run out of gas to use it. So I imagine there is some footage where they were getting too high of an MPG and figured they had to drive faster and more inefficiently to make sure they ran out of gas. BTW, when accelerating you WANT to use the assist. As long as you don’t go over 3/4 throttle. In fact, my best mileage of over 800 miles on 9 gallons of gas; I would accelerate and decelerate using the IMA. If you don’t use the assist, you get WORSE mileage!

Very nice video. In addition to a full tune up and add missing underbody kit, I'd have done it differently in these things: Use cruise control on flat land &, disable on even the slightest incline, watch my tachometer all the time and try to stay between 1500-2000 rpm, no duct tape anywhere, leave all the wipers & mirrors in place, inflate 10% over the recommended pressure, go down to 155 instead of 165 tires, service the brakes to ensure zero brake drag, check the health of the clutch pedal/plate & pressure plate, check wheel alignment, keep the vent for hvac on fresh air, absolutely no luggage in the car, less speed going to NY and more on return to make use of altitude, plan the trip keeping an eye on traffic patterns, look at the weather & plan the trip when winds are low and then rely 100% on the trip computer as these things are spot on. No tailgating any vehicle as its outright dangerous. On a side note, you can't beat the fuel economy numbers quoted by the manufacturer by a lot.

I had a 2001. It was an interesting car, but it cost Honda over $10,000 in repairs between the IMA battery and catalytic converters. That said, the holy grail for those cars is the kilotank, or 1000 miles on one 10.8 gallon tank. That's with the mirrors on. Generally you have to drive 45 mph in lean burn mode.

Hey guys new to the channel loving it just watched a few more but had to come back to say that during my short time working at honda on this car before moving over to Nissan from what i remember the car body gaps and possibly the mirror(dont quote me on that( actualy helped reduce the drag coefficient by creating vortices and positive air pressure waves and inwash that helped decrease the negative pressure behind the vehicle thus reducing overall drag, you could have also gotten a leaner tune however dont go overboard with this maby a 1 to 5 percent change anything other then that and you are playing with fire, also would recommend overpressure in the tires 5 to 10 psi also Cruse at 50 mph highway top gear for best results also if you can get a bigger aftermarket radiator and or add a better one that will allow it to lean boost more often because if i remember it was designed to do it up until a certain twmp was reached so maby try in the cold and you will get 75+ with the steps i provided

I loved the efficiency of the insight when I was in high school and even wrote my senior research paper on it. Do you guys remember the mpg insight battle that car magazines wrote about in the early 2000s? The winner ended up renting a large suv with side opening doors. they would literally make the insight drive up to the back bumper of the suv while the doors were open. They'd only move apart when a cop car was spotted so they wouldn't get a ticket. Got over 100mpg and beat everyone else by about 30 mpg. btw, did you ever check the battery age and how well it holds the charge?

I bet that trip could have been done on the Insights fuel alone, albeit with some somewhat miserable hypermiling techniques. When I had a 2004 CVT Insight my best tank was just over 700 miles. There's also about a 0.5 gallon reserve (~10.5 gallons total), which is why people report the car going so far after the final fuel light goes out. Carrying capacity for the gen 1 is also under 400 pounds in total, but of course removing everything you did easily accounted for that. Really miss my Insight. Despite its tiny power output, being so light and having the electric motors instant torque before that became commonplace made it a blast and a surprisingly popular car among friends. The skirt helped a bit too. 😅
