Hypertension is a common condition that affects one in every three adults in the United States.
The JNC 8 criteria define it as a blood pressure of ≥ 140/90 mm Hg and by the AHA/ACC guidelines as ≥ 130/80 mm Hg. Hypertension can be classified as either primary (essential) or secondary. Primary hypertension accounts for approx. 95% of cases of hypertension and has no detectable cause, whereas secondary hypertension is due to a specific underlying condition. Typical underlying conditions include renal, endocrine, or vascular diseases (e.g., renal failure, primary hyperaldosteronism, or coarctation of the aorta). Clinically, hypertension is usually asymptomatic until organ damage occurs, which then commonly affects the brain, heart, kidneys, or eyes (e.g., retinopathy, myocardial infarction, stroke). Common early symptoms of hypertension include headache, dizziness, tinnitus, and chest discomfort. Hypertension is diagnosed if blood pressure is persistently elevated on two or more separate measurements. Further diagnostic measures include evaluation of possible organ damage (e.g., kidney function tests) and additional tests if an underlying disease is suspected. Treatment of primary hypertension includes lifestyle changes (e.g., diet, weight loss, exercise) and pharmacotherapy. Commonly prescribed antihypertensive medications include ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, thiazide diuretics, and calcium channel blockers. Management of pediatric patients and pregnant women differs from that of nonpregnant adults because some of these drugs are contraindicated in these patient groups. To treat secondary hypertension, the underlying cause needs to be addressed. In cases of hypertensive emergency, a condition in which there is a sudden and severe increase in blood pressure and impending end-organ damage, immediate treatment with intravenous antihypertensives is required to prevent serious consequences such as cerebral hemorrhage.

Vaso constriction of peripheral arterioles Peripheral vascular resistance of arterioles. Hyper viscosity. Therefore increase of heart rate therefore the coronary arteriosclerosis not receive blood for the Aorta. Increase of Heart rate decrease in the diastolic period of the Cardiac cycle. Other factors: Vasodilation of PVR arterioles. Severe Anemia

@@denver5614its usually around the low 100s. Rarely gets below 90. I've seen it as high as 125. Yes I probably should have went to the hospital at that point but I didn't. I do think I have anxiety, never went to a Dr for it though. I'm going to start exercising and see if that helps. I've been throwing every supplement I can at it with not much help.

He mentions heart rate as a factor. So if aerobic exercise raises heart rate significantly (especially if unfit) then it’s going to also amplify any other factors including the vasoconstriction of the peripheral arteries as increased volume of blood will be forced through. It may be that without the increased heart rate, the arteries are sufficient for the blood volume and so the BP is fine, in which case it’s probably going to be mostly attributable to a dramatic increase in heart rate. Or perhaps the vasoconstriction is always a problem, albeit minor, and so the increase in heart rate needed to affect diastolic BP is not so great.
