I saw Mr. Sin standing in Greel's Distillation Chamber, and the Giant Rat in a sewer, at the original 70s Doctor Who Exhibition at Blackpool! ... I also saw, the Giant Robot, the Krynoid, the Morbius Monster and his brain in a tank of green liquid, the Robots Of Death, K-9, Sutekh, and of course the Daleks which were specially built for the Exhibition! ... Happy days!

One of the best Doctor Who stories ever made, pretty much flawless aside from Mr. Cuddles the rat, and even then, there've been far worse monster costumes. A triumph of writing, acting, design, and direction. Almost beyond all that though, one has to adore the sheer brazen cheek of Philip Hinchcliffe. "So- I've been fired for making Doctor Who too frightening, too adult, and too expensive... OK, here comes the season finale. We're going to blow the budget out of the water, do a sci-fi take on Jack the Ripper, with blood, gore, people being eaten alive by giant rats, the main villain will be hideously disfigured, we'll have tons of references to opium addicts, someone smoking opium on screen, a prostitute, and... hm, people thought Leela's leather leotard was inappropriate? OK, that's fine, we'll put her in Victorian clothes now. Specifically, transparent white underwear, which we'll then get soaking wet, on camera. What are they going to do? Fire me?" I'm only surprised he didn't put it out under the title "The Talons of Mary Whitehouse."

What a boring predictable remark. Do you get "right on" points for making it? No doubt in 2070 or so, there'll be all manner of taboos broken in 2020s television that the 2070 audience will childishly meet at... and very probably the pet obsessions of the circa 2020 crowd will have been forgotten about, your moral crusades abandoned half done just like everyone's before you. Personally, the rest of us will just carry on enjoying the story.

i would like to say that i do not think this story is racist, i have met many chinese people from hong kong over the years and they are very nice people, in the 70s when this was made it would have been harder to find many chinese people who wanted to act as mostly they ran their own businesses, it is true however that many chinese people who settled in the u.k over the decades have been subjected to descrimination in one form or another. this is a shame as hong kongers are very hard working and innovative people and many may want to settle under the new scheme being arranged by the british government in 2021, they would be good for great britain and they can then still enjoy the british way and freedoms they love and appreciate. i wish them well. regards the dark knight.

I think what you've done here is 'positive stereotyping', if such a thing exists. I hear that Africans are extremely hard working, and Jews have great business acumen. ...What? It's a compliment! 😉

You won't find a hint of wokeness in the classic series - well, tell a lie, there is a marginal bit about women's lib, a swipe at capitalism & one about pollution but it never got in the way of the story. Not like now sadly, where it completely dominates every story.

In what respect is it racist the story is set in victorian times so racism against Chinese etc would be prevalent or should we alter history to keep the snowflakes happy, OK a white plays a Chinese man but that was common place in the 70s look at Charlie chan movies rarely played by a chinese actor plus the actor plays it with respect and not stereotypicaly

As written, this story isn't racist, however, casting a white actor in the main Chinese character, which sadly was commonplace at the time, leaves this story tinged with outdated attitudes.
