Pleasantly surprised by the Hytera PD985 UHF DMR handheld. The radio appears and feels very rugged, with a plethora of features including encryption (prohibited on HAM radio), DMR repeater on single frequency, GPS and Bluetooth among others. You will see it again on this channel! Surprising results and a little tour of the magnificent city of Antibes on the French Riviera, in the vicinity of Port Vauban.

Thank you for the great review. That looks like a good quality radio with a lot of SHTF potential. I always appreciate your prepper perspective and focus. I also enjoyed the mini tour. I don't travel to Europe so I like the virtual travel.

I have both Motorola XPR7550 and APX8000 portable radios and Hytera PD782 / 982 and 682 portable radios. I definitely like the Motorola look and feel, but LOVE the Hytera FPP (field programmability). I mostly use Hytera RD982 repeaters (approx 7) and have yet to have one fail. Thanks for this video.

Very interesting videos as always. I had a QSO of about 60km between the cities of Hjo and Jonkoping in Sweden I was surprised standing by the seaside in Hjo at one of the large lakes in Sweden, Vättern. DMR is another dimension of amateurradio. We also use a local DMR frekvense without repeater and it works well during my lunch walks when working from home. That is also a nice way to use ham radio. It have been quite a lot of QSo:s during theese lunch walks. 73 SA5GNO Gunnar

It would be very interesting to see the review of Belfone BF-TD930(MC-N) which has a similar feature set, including Single Frequency Repeater and something they call ah-hoc network. It would be interesting how 2-3 of these could maybe expand range for other radios in the network. These radios also seem to be dual-band.

I skipped all the talk about DMR and went straight to looking at your city - very beautiful city !. DMR/DSTAR/SYSTEM FUSION etc etc does not interest me in the least. If I am going to be using the internet to talk to some other guy, then I would rather spend that time talking to my family. Maybe it's because I got hooked on radio in the early 80's with the magic of REAL RF. Anything that uses RF between both points - HF CW, SSB, even FT8, satellites, VHF and UHF simplex DX, 6 meters etc etc is what really interests me. Thanks for the tour of your city Gil.

Hi there great video, I am located in Ireland, and I do a small bit of prep, I was looking for something to keep communication between myself and my family also located in Ireland but 80miles away, I have no experience with radios at all, is this something you would recommend?
@RadioPrepper
@RadioPrepper 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, 80 miles is the hardest distance. Your best best would be NVIS: 40m (7MHz) or 80m (3.5MHz) using a horizontal antenna. Nothing else will be reliable.

They do make good radios, but you should try an Anytone D868UVPlus also bluetooth, GPS Digital APRS etc etc BUT VHF and UHF too! These radios are also good for a lone wolf if you have access to DMR repeaters and simplex on DMR gives greater range than analogue. You might need to upgrade the car rig to the Anytone AT-D578UV III Pro which will get you out very far with better antennas and more power!

@@RadioPrepper Alright, and a few more things if thats ok. If you were to buy one, where would you do so, and if you changed the antenna, would it no longer be waterproof? And lastly, do you think the PD785 is a good choice? I heard its basically a 985 but without Tier III DMR, which us regular mortals don't need anyway.
@RadioPrepper
@RadioPrepper Ай бұрын
Hi, no idea where. I don't think changing the antenna would nullify the waterproofing. The 785 would still be a good choice, though look at the Ailunce HD2..

Sorry, but D-Star/GMFSK and YSF/C4FM are not "proprietary"; both are open source. And, if you go into DMR you are just as "locked in" as the others. The only thing closed-source is the CODEC; used by ALL THREE. What you should have said is that the Chinese are producing a plethora of very cheap radios using DMR protocol; making the cost of entry into Digital Voice much lower if you choose the DMR path.
