I test drove the AWD Ionic 5 yesterday! What a car! Very quiet and comfy. Perfect handling, nice acceleration, very strong regen (which I love). Loads of room front and back. Charging speed surprised me the most! At this price point it is a very good alternative on the EV market.

@@kornman really?! Never had a chance to drive e-soul but Ionic5 was very quiet. It has something they call acoustic windshield and double side windows. The one I drove was the highest trim but with the standard roof. Bjorn, a higher voltage system will reduce V sag with an equivalent output to a lower voltage system. Greater the amperage demand, the higher the sag. So if you double the voltage and demand the same amount of power, you'll require half the amps to achieve the power. Now you're correct in that at the cell level the lower resistance will decrease the sag. But with twice as many cells you are drawing half as many amps from each cell.

We placed an order for an Ioniq 5 in August with a planned delivery date of May 23!. This will be our first EV and we are really looking forward to it. We did look at Tesla 3 and Y, but it the UK they are still very expensive. Model Y is nearly £9,000 more than an Ioniq. Also there are so many Tesla's around and they are becoming very common - they have lost their appeal (at least for me). 90% of the time we will be charging for home, and therefore the efficiency is not an issue. Great review Bjorn

I love the Ionic 5 look. I test drove the mid-priced version last week and bought it. For my needs the only alternative would be a Model Y, but it’s not available in the UK yet and the first cars will no doubt be sold out for months. I’m getting my Ionic 5 Premium next week. I prefer it’s look to the Tesla anyway. It’s a shame Hyundai are giving all the reviewers the Ultimate or P45 version. I was shocked at what you DON’T get in the Premium version. I think it might be better on fuel consumption though - less horsepower, no awd, smaller 19” wheels.

Model Y LR costs 20-30% more here in Sweden than a fully loaded AWD IONIQ 5 depending on if you want EAP or not. I really like the ventilated seats, HUD, 360 camera and sunshade option (roof and back doors) on IONIQ 5. Sadly Model Y have very little equipment for it's price. Not to mention that the Model Y LR is 3 to 4 times more expensive to insure than i5! Crazy! In Norway I believe the price is more close between the cars.

I actually preferred the Autopilot system in the EQC, which I owned before my Model 3. The latter isn’t able to read traffic signs on the Autobahn, it will only use the information which are provided by the navigation system. That makes it pretty much useless if you drive through construction zones or zones with a variable speed limit a lot, since I don’t want manually adjust the speed all the time.

There is a bit of a difference in voltage sag between 400 and 800 V systems. In the 800 V system you only need half the Amperes for the same power output, so the internal resistance of the battery has less of an effect…
@andersmusikka
@andersmusikka 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but you also have half the cell capacity in parallell, so the effect cancels out. Unless your 800V system is simply twice the size by energy content, in which case the comparison is quite unfair.

Ha ha. Splitting a 400 volt parallel pack, and making a new 800v series pack also doubles the total series reistance of the battery pack. The big gains in 800v is overcoming the R of the vehicle wiring, teminals, and inverter resistance.

HI Björn, First of all, thank you for all your videos and reviews of EVs! I have one question? When I drive Ioniq 5 on level 0, and brake, no regen happens. From page 6-16 in the Owner's Manual: "Selecting 0 step of the regenerative braking system, the brake disc cleaning function is operated around 10 times. While operating to clean the brake disc, the driving distance and the regenerative braking performance can be reduced. After finishing, the regenerative braking performance will be restored." - This seems like a useful function, but the problem is that regenerative breaking (while using the break pedal) is not reinstated after "around 10 times". I've tried breaking 30-40 times, but no regen occurs. Secondly When I drive at constant speed, let say 50 (foot on the gas pedal all the time), in level 0 and then change to level 1, 2 or 3...you can feel resistans and car doesent go so smooth like in level 0. It feels like it regenerate (I know that that is impossible, but it feel like so) Or when you drive in level 3 and then change to 2, 1 or 0 you can feel that car goes much easier. (while driving, foot is on the gas pedal ofcourse) I wonder if you, or anybody, have experienced same thing and why is that so? Why does car go smoother on level 0 than on level 3, while gassing of course?

Voltage sag is proportional to current (think of the wires as resistors and use Ohms Law). Power is roughly proportional to voltage squared. So doubling the voltage, and keeping power constant requires one quarter of the current. This means that, delivering the same power, an 800V battery will have one quarter of the voltage sag compared to a 400V battery (assuming the wires from the battery have the same resistance).

I might like the Ionic better, more room, quieter cabin a little softer ride better seats. I have the 2020 Soul EV and I find the seat bottoms too hard for long trips, thinking that the EV6 will have similar seats. Love the large panoramic glass roof on the Iconic with the close-able shade, the functional Sun roof on my 2020 Soul hardly gets used. We get the 77.4KWH battery here in Canada although Hyundai now is making that extended range battery globally. And those are SKI batteries (same as my 2020 Soul EV) not that LG stuff!!! Thank you Hyundai!!!

I keep going back and forth between the Audi Q4 etron and the Ioniq 5. I'd appreciate any commentary on the considerations for each, since you have driven both. My sense from reviews is: Ioniq 5: A bit more tech. Much faster charging. Cabin feels "different" due to layout if you like it. Better performance in terms of power/quickness (although RWD versions of each look fairly close, it's the AWD where Hyundai really pulls ahead). Nice interior but it's nice as compared to other Hyundais/Kias. Car is for someone who might ordinarily like a Tesla but doesn't want a Tesla for whatever reason. Q4: Proven BEV platform, quieter ride, better interior, more of an "SUV" feel in terms of ride height. Car is for someone who cares less about having the very latest tech and just wants a quiet, comfortable, premium ride. Tie considerations: Real world battery range seems equivalent. Pricing seems like it'll be about the same in the US (Hyundai pricing unannounced in the US). Maybe I am wrong on some (or all) of this, I am cobbling together reviews and comments from Reddit threads.

@@Wasabi9111 won’t be quieter. Perhaps as-quiet. Question is whether the US Ioniq will have acoustic front glass as Euro models do. The Hyundai spec sheet for the US doesn’t specifically mention it.

I had the same conundrum, what made me finally buy the ioniq was that i like the open interior better, more modern platform and it was 5000 euro cheaper than a Q4 with way less equipment

I test drove the Ioniq 5 last week and even though it was very easy to drive and steered perfectly I was very disappointed with the way it handled on roundabouts with the quick changes of directions. It feels like you are high on some platform (like a boat) that gets rocked left and right. The contrast was very strong because I didn't feel like that in the Enyaq I drove yesterday.

Battery weight can do that. If your mileage per day allows, try a lighter/smaller battery vehicle like Mini SE, Honda e,, Mazda mx30

Bjørn, there is a setting where you can set the driver seat to automaticly go backwards when you turn off the car. This can fix your problem of bumping into the stearingwheel rack and buttons. Personaly I dont have the problem because I have longer legs

People comparing ioniq 5 with tesla model y is price wise already a huge win for hyundai. It always comes down to a matter of personal preference. For me a clear winner is the I5, due to unique looks, and normal car feeling whereas I don't like the tablet approach with tesla and their autonomous driving features do nothing for me.

Don't forget that you can have people + luggage in the ioniq 5, in the y you have like 100kg less usable weight. I bought the ioniq5 , and this was one of the reasons.

I often hear complaints about touch screen position from car reviewers. But pleaze, know that you are NOT suposed to fiddle whit it while driving. Thats why its importent that there also are fysical buttons to some maine funktions. Maby voice command could lessen the "problem" whit placement of screens so it can look good to🙂

the greater battery voltage, the lower the current from battery. The lower the current from battery, the lower voltage drop. So 800V tech DOES have something to do with 6% voltage drop when hammering. Same for charging - higher voltage=lower current=lower heat=more power can go in..

Great review as always. One detail though. You say that the HEPA filter in the Tesla takes away odour like the diesel smell from the car in front of you. To my best knowledge a HEPA filter does not take away odour. You would need a carbon (gas) filter to do that. Could it be that Tesla has such a filter as well?
@backmanperez
@backmanperez 2 жыл бұрын
@@ms-jl6dl Thanks! I suspected that was the case. I must admit I work with these kinds of filters but not in relation to cars. To be correct the particle filter (often called HEPA) does not “kill” bacteria and viruses but they are pretty good in filtrating the majority of them from the air. So no guarantee to protect you 100% but a really good tool for a cleaner indoor air.

Notice how the front of the car lifts up when Bjorn hammers the accelerator? This is called suspension squat which points to suboptimal geometry coupled with soft springs. This car is not a canyon carver.
