We collect our Hyundai Ioniq 5 and drive it straight away from Edinburgh back to Bournemouth. That’s 500 miles in a day and a really good chance to test the charging speed and efficiency of the car, plus of course get to know it better.
A full review will follow soon but here are our first impressions plus of course all the information gathered on this 500 mile in a day trip!
This is the launch edition Project 45 and comes with a 73kwh useable battery pack, and is the 4 wheel drive version.
Hyundai claim 22kw charging speeds - can it reach this? Exactly how long will it take to recharge? Can i eat my noodles befores it’s finished?
All these questions answered, and stay subscribed for a more in-depth review detailing all the things i like and DONT like about this car.

I have the EV6 GT which is not that less efficient and can get about 210 miles of range at 70mph. The reason why the Ioniq was so efficient is like my Nissan Leaf 2 which I still have, is the weight. My Leaf is 1580Kg and the Ionic is 1602kg, my EV6 and the Ioniq 5 to a lesser extent are much heavier, the GT comes is at 2200kg, that's 630 kg more than the Leaf. That's like carrying around six 105kg passengers plus the driver all the time, which uses a lot more power every time you accelerate, even gently and that's why many of the new cars are so inefficient. Tesla makes their cars from aluminum which helps keep the weight down but even two very efficient motors and a big battery push the weight back up again. Only when we make EVs in the sub-1500kg range will we see greater efficiencies from today's tech.

Just bought one. Traded in our 20 month old X5. Never thought I’d prefer an electric car, but the Ioniq 5 is better looking, quicker, smoother and will save me £300 a month in diesel and road tax.

Lol, that's cool! You really can't compare the quality of BMW with Hyundai, but the feeling in electric car is awesome!

@@paco9713 I've been a 8 year bmw owner and a 6 year audi owner. Got on a Mazda CX5 last month and couldn't believe why people are still buying German. The quality is top notch! Tested the Ioniq 5 last week and saw the GV70 in a showroom in Munich. The Koreans are definitely on the right track. I'm just waiting what Mazda will have in 2022-2023 MY. Then it'll be down to a Mazda or a Hyundai/Genesis. If you're not a brand whore there is no excuse not to get the Ioniq 5.

You do wonder where the government is going to claw back all the fuel duty and road tax when everyone goes electric. Think this may be the golden age of electric driving, with driving costs being as low as they are.

@@AP-qu8sl In the winter its about 230 miles on a full charge, in the summer it will be about 325 miles.

I liked your review. I have this car for past 3 months now. And I absolutely love it. It is so comfy, fast, spacious, luxurious, quite and has all the features which a car must have.

Love this car, especially the design and the lights. I took it for a test drive and was really impressed by the performance and interior space. It’s huge! And the rear seats recline, loads of leg room and very comfortable seats.

Amazing charge speed and looking forward to your full review,. The car certainly has it's own style and it is great that all manufacturers are not copying each other. I would also be interested to see how the different drive modes affect the motorway runs, especially when you can maintain 70MPH. The super fast charging really is a game changer and I believe is what is needed to bring more people over to owning an EV. Keep up the great videos!

Not a thing about the cost of each charge or any info on that. UK energy prices have increased 3-4times in a year, so these cars are no longer cheaper to run.

The 20” wheels on this car reduce range by 7% according to Hyundai, hence the range will not be on par with specs. The 19” is a better choice and less costly too.

Had my Ioniq 5 10 days and I'm loving it. Haven't had chance to do a long run yet - put less than 200 miles on it so far and haven't had chance to test the charge speed. Therefore your video was very interesting. With a combination of round-town running, short A-road dashes and some country runs I'm getting 4.4 miles/kWh. I've turned the lane-assist off as it was getting on my nerves. I've got a long cross-country run coming up in a couple of weeks so I might fiddle with the settings to see if it can be made acceptable.

That’s good economy! With that you could be up to 300 miles per charge (or more!). I certainly wasn’t trying but 3.4 was the best I saw from it that day. It doesn’t seem particularly aerodynamic so 70mph hits it

I was getting over 4 regularly with my RWD Premium, but now the temperatures are falling and the cabin heater is getting more use, low 3’s are more the order of the day. I’m not looking forward to seeing how it does when it gets really cold.

How's the self-driving? Can you turn off lane assist and still have it self-drive on freeways?

@@5DollarHoller Hyundai's "self driving" is completely useless. It uses torque sensing for the "hands on wheel" detection. If you're on a straight stretch, it constantly beeps at your for "not having your hands on the wheel" when you absolutely have. Really useless feature. Can only hope that Comma.AI will have an aftermarket unit for the Ioniq 5.

@@wombatdk Thanks. Ioniq 5 was probably top of my list a month ago, now I'm scared off by the massive bugs I'm hearing about from the software from the owners in Germany. Really scared of a first gen EV.

Yet to drive an EV6, but prefer the look & feel of it to the Ioniq5. Our short drive of the Ioniq5 didn't overly impress, (maybe because was a mid spec, rather than top spec 45) however the charging speed, V2L are both impressive new features that hopefully will become a standard!

Ha ha !! That’s exactly what I thought when I first saw it !! It looks like a 1980’s concept car; what the Maestro designers drew up with their fancy marker pens, but we all know the end result 😂

Tongue in cheek I assume? Having owned a Maestro back in the 80's, I can vouch for the fact that British Leyland could not have built a reliable alarm clock, even if provided with the financial resources of the Apollo Space Programme.....

Was only really a fan of the truck side of BL through my dad and grandads time driving them, although I seem to think they ran separate from the car side of the business (could be wrong there).⅗ But your bang on with the Apollo budget analogy, still surprised they lasted as long as they did. That aside when I first saw the Iconic 5 I couldn't help but see the Maestro.

Love to see a 58kwh testing on a long journey. Most people only need this size and the quick charging is the game changer. A race between the ionic and id4 small batteries would be a fantastic video?

Real world informative and entertaining tests. Tesla Model S P85 owned 7 years 125,000 uk miles, Ioniq 5 is the only EV Ive ever tested apart from Tesla. Those seats superb. Just down on performance for me and Ive been spoiled on charging so anything non Tesla an unknown but love the car.

I really like the look of this car - reminds of the old Lancia Integrale in the shape. If you asked an 80's hatchback designer to draw the hatchback of the future, i kind of feel that this is the car he would draw. We see a lot of them on the road up here in Norway, and they don't disappoint in the flesh. Selling like hotcakes up here.

Was expecting a bit more efficiency, but it’s still good. You don’t need huge range when you can charge fast (I would say that I’ve just got an etron). But I’ve had a look at the car in the showroom at Everton and it’s awesome. Looks great, loads of space and very innovative. Bring on the Ioniq 7!

The nose reminds me of the Alfa Romeo SZ from the end of the 80's. Love the hot hatch look and the luxury lounge-morphing seat. The glove-drawer is brilliant and I hope it will be copied all over. A shame about the door handles and the not so good efficiency at highway speeds.

It is an amazing car and a very good review :) You are the first reviewer I see talking about the lane keeping assist (10:55). Other reviewers don't say this, but it is really weird behaviour. The Hyundai Ioniq (the old model without the 5) does this too. So does the Kia EV6, which has a very direct steering. When I did a test drive of that vehicle, I almost got sick on the motorway...

Had a test drive of this to confirm our pre order (because in NZ the non-standard models won't be here until Q2 next year. Absolutely loved it. Good to see an assessment of it over a long drive. Can confirm the boot takes two Ridgebacks comfortably, which was a must have for us.

@@andgate2000 nope, but we did take a friend who's an inch or two shorter than me (I'm 6'3") to sit in the back behind me in the driver's seat. Both had acres of space, best car I've been in for that.

Another great video - well done. It will be interesting to see if there is any impact of ultra fast charging on the Hyundai's batteries in a few years time. Perhaps we will need Björn's scanning app for that one. While the Hyundai is an interesting proposition (and the Kia EV6 an even better one), it's not the car for me. I'm waiting for my new Tesla Model 3 Performance to arrive in November.

This car is a charging MONSTER! Wow, 13:45 50% added in 11mins. That's half the battery in about half the length of this video! If we can get the infrastructure built, EV batteries will get smaller (and lighter) when they charge this quickly.

But it's range with the 74 kwh battery is similar to the model 3 sr+ with 50kwh. So the charging speed is ok but the range is way less

Yer very good Car would have been interested in it or ev6 if there was more ultra fast rapids for it . Our sr+ so the slower charging model 3 is not to bad either 6 mins charging 33% of the battery added 15.5 kWh ! And I bet long range wouLd add more so Tesla is not too Shabby done 2300 miles in last month lots on motorways at speed limits and getting just bit more than 4 miles per kWh with heating or ac on were necessary not driving very eco. And know a friend that has long range 3 and it’s getting near as high miles per kWh and there is a lot more ultra fast charging plugs than normal ccs networks . And how much is it to charge per kWh on Ioniq 5 on ionity ? Heard it cheap for a year or two on p45 but how much ? As the 69 p a kWh they ask for non group cars is madness!

I've seen a few folks comparing it to a maestro - I can't see it (and I do keep looking!). The first thing it reminds me of is an updated Lancia Delta Integrale. Although as an ex Volvo 850 T5R driver, having driven it, the size of the boot reminds me more of that - How Hyundai have managed to get something the size of a Volvo estate and disguise it as an Integrale boggles the mind. To be fair both the Lancia and the Volvo are all-time faves - so a car that takes the best of both (and of course the AWD will outperform both the T5R and the Integrale on 0-60 times) is a complete winner for me. Mine arrives for Christmas ;-)

And I remember the Delta’s! They were hot on the wrc circuit and were fascinating. Always hated their rear lights but yes that front end mean look 😬

Similar to a couple of other comments, my wife and I also had a test drive in the Ioniq 5 and were disappointed with the look compared to what we had seen online. I enjoyed your review of how the vehicle managed that long journey and the impressive charging time. One observation on our experience when we took the car out, I got my right index finger stuck in the new-fangled door handle. I mentioned that to the garage staff and they said that no one else had reported having done the same. Maybe it is just me. I will say that the car drives very well and was comfortable. We also had a test drive in an ID4 and both of us prefer the VW. Looking forward to your full review of the car.

Very fair & worthwhile review. I did a similar drive and got similar results. The charging speed benefit is huge - I can’t bear slow chargers anymore!

Cool, I was hoping mine wasn’t unfairly inefficient! I think it’s just not aerodynamic enough for efficiency motorway cruising but as I say it’s not bad considering it is a pretty large car. Charge speed superb though.

@@RSEV just checking back my Northbound journey averaged 3.7miles per kWh. I didn’t use eco but I did have the AC in driver-only mode. All motorway, but only 52mph average due to traffic. So 250 miles real-world range.

I’d love to see how an electric car handles the drive back from Edinburgh along the a68? There’s some pretty crazy hills for a bit of regen along the way, It’s my favourite drive back to England.

I’m glad that you are pointed out that the Hyundai Kona get superior range. I’ve been weighing up whether it’s worth selling mind or holding onto it to see what eventuates over the next few years.

@@Santi-pp7zs Utan Carmax manufacturers. need to be a bit more frank about the range estimates on the cars big difference between the driving driving at 60 km an hour versus 120 gnu highway conditions. In a diesel from personal experience you getting much better economy at higher speeds but with an ev irs the other Way round

@@chrisnewman7281 My experience (with more EV models) is that the range witch 60mph (100 km/h) will be more or less the wltp range. (hyundai cars, ioniq classic, konaE64 and ioniq 5). Every km /h faster (1% faster) will increase energy usage/km with ca 2%. When driving (before I bought EV's) my diesel (nissan xtrail awd 2004) usage with 100 km/h was ca 14,5 km/liter diesel. With 140km/h ca 10,5 km/liter diesel. Also that car had a much lower usage with 100 km/h than with faster driving. And...EV cars are extremely efficient in town driving because regeneration of ca 75% of the energy under slowing down ...a diesel/petrol car will loose 100% during braking from it's speed energy. But I do agree that a graphic for fuel consumption would be very usefull...consumption at constatnt speeds , but that for both....EV and ICE cars.

Thing for me is I'm doing my research for the future, I'm gonna start having driving lessons again next year with a view to the future. If I'm gonna be running a car on a daily basis I'm considering a hybrid as a first car, can imagine at 38 as a first car it would be a safe say insurance wouldn't be stupid. Electric vehicles need will hopefully come down in price over the coming years when the infrastructure becomes a lot more on spec. The current ev that catches my eye is the Kia EV6, cracking looking styling alongside its sister car the Ioniq.

I saw someone else’s long trip in Norway earlier. It was quite a lot less economic than most other tested cars. Charged quickly though although that didn’t make up for the extra stops required.

That full-roof solar panel is a nice addition. Here with the US version, that's not an option. We just get the big moonroof that doesn't open.

I'm one of those people. My sister and brother-in-law own a brand new Nissan Leaf, but would not use it for a trip from Perthshire to the south of England (preferring to use their diesel campervan) because they calculated that they would have to make several charging stops and (a) they did not want to waste time waiting for the charging to take place, because they share the driving, and (b) they were not confident that the charging points would be both working and unoccupied.

@@Joesolo13 You're delusional just suppose he doesn't live on campus and maybe he needs some furniture from the local IKEA, perhaps some lunch in a near by village pub .Not even the slightest worry with a full tank of diesel . However In even the best electric a world of range anxiety awaits. local journeys not a problem I'll Grant you that. Anything else just not practical yet. Even Hyundai will supply a diesel model for long journeys as part of a deal to get you in an electric.

It is a good demonstration and comparison. If space and comfort is a priority then I would choose Ioniq but I want price of both cars to come down a bit. Am I crazy? There are not many parts associated with EVs.

I test drove one of these recently and I have to say -- it's just not as good looking in real life as it seems in videos. My wife, and I, were very excited when we went to the garage, we got there, and her first comment to me was "nooooo....that's not it is it, I hate it, that's not what you showed me in the video!". End of conversation. To be fair, the model we were test driving wasn't the Project 45 that Richard had the luxury of trying in this video, they did have one in the showroom we went to -- but that was only for the Manager apparently -- "customers can't have it" - nice, congrats on your new ride Manager-only bloke. That version definitely looked a bit better than our weird blue-ish thing they gave us, which was genuinely a yucky colour. It made *such* a difference. The nice(r) one, though, is not available to us mere mortals, we have to buy the blue thing in a different colour it seems, without most of the toys that are available on the rarerer than rocking horse manure Project 45. Having said that, the sales guy was very nice and incredibly tolerant of my wife spewing into her bucket, verbally. God bless you sir, and thank you for your patience and tolerance of a somewhat less than excited customer's wife! Credit to you and sorry for that! We took it out anyway, and it was definitely nicer inside - actually, inside, this thing is quite nice, but honestly......it's no Tesla - not even close. Amazing how something can look great online, but so much different in real life. I'd not have believed it if I hadn't been there and witnessed it for myself. It's a lot chunkier in real life than it seems in videos, it's a *big lump* of car which I wasn't expecting. Also, the dual screens, MASSIVE bezels, like a CRT monitor from the 80's! They were so wide that you couldn't really read the Sat Nav very well since there wasn't enough road on the screen. On the plus side, it was pretty comfy I must say, those seats are lovely :-) If you are considering this car, trust me, go look at it - not on KZfaq, in real life. You may love it more and I hope you do, but I (we!) didn't -- and that was unexpected and somewhat sad. If I had to sum up my drive, and feelings, in this car -- it would be "meh". Sorry Hyundai, I genuinely wanted to like it, but I definitely appreciated the sales guy's approach, he was lovely, and if you're reading this then full marks chief! Thanks for the video Richard, love your views. How on Earth you run a business whilst keeping these honest reviews coming is beyond me, but please do, I love them, you're so balanced and real world.

Brilliant video! Loved the timelapse of the charge session in Leeds, a nice transition from light to dark with the neons. Little details you included were really useful like talking about the solar panel, when it uses the front motor. I'm not surprised by the economy, my etron 50 would return maybe 2.8-3.0m/kWh on your leg to Leeds. What I am surprised by is the fact Hyundai haven't managed to improve efficiency over a similar car like the etron, despite Hyundai's excellent efficiency record (eniro, ioniq) so does that mean the tech is at a plateau and we're waiting for the next best thing? Impressive vehicle nonetheless, like it.

Nah - I think it means this isn’t a particularly aerodynamic car, with big wheels and 2 motors to lug around. If you’re prepared to sacrifice a litlle power I think the RWD version will be more efficient. The Model Y is more a direct competitor and when you can get it, it’s much more efficient (in the reviews I’ve seen) although a little slower charging.

@@mondotv4216 Yea must be less slippery than the etron. The etron is the same size and heavy and carries 2 motors. Motorway cruising both Ioniq 5 and etron are still at similar levels of efficiency. Others here are saying off the motorway the Ioniq 5 AWD returns better economy above what the etron achieves, so yea aero makes sense. The model Y is just efficient full stop but isn't the same class of car but does, like you say, manage to compete with these bigger cars.

​@@chrischild3667 Believe it or not the Model Y is bigger all round than the Ioniq 5 although it's wheelbase is slightly shorter. About the only place it misses out is the sloping back compared to the cutoff style of the Ioniq but it has more luggage space anyway. I think you can get the Tesla with smaller wheels and it's just slipperier through the air.

Its a good job that you decided to press on with your quiet journey and completed 500 miles in 9 hours I suffered a 12 hour journey (8.00am - 8.00pm) to near Newquay Cornwall some 250 miles from Birmingham in torrential rain queuing for hours just to get a charge at every stop Suffering charger malfunctions and ending in the red ,50 miles from destination and the charger not accepting contactless payment ,and the venue about to close for the day ( 5.45pm Saturday evening) Talk about stress And as for the siting of chargers without cover I was soaked right through the waterproof had had enough and so was I Better to have a long range battery these days while the infrastructure isn't there yet

Every time I talk to charging companies, like at Fully Charged show, I always say they should be covered, doesn't need ICE forecourt canopies, something like a small bus stop would be enough. I'm sure some weather protection, as well as giving a drier experience for the user, would make the charger last longer, without direct rain, frost, UV, etc on it. Apparently, its often quicker to get planning, if a simple charger, a canopy would hold up the process.

@@spikebmth it was a wonderful charging bays created at my nearest Sainsbury all 10 of them undercover but not 1 rapid charger who wants to shop for 4hrs for a near decent slow charge I have done the splash and dash routine for a year and all that did was to lower my range drastically I'm back to near drain then charge to keep up the range in my 4 year old Ioniq Perhaps the newer systems can cope

That's unlikely to be the case in 2 to 3 years once Gridserve come on stream with their charging hubs. They are planning to buld 100 of them on all the UK's major road routes. The first one to open, in Braintree in Essex, has almost 40 chargers, rated from 22kw (Zoe) up to 350kw - for the newer 800 volt cars like the Ioniq 5 and Porsche Taycan. I've travelled from Cornwall up to Cumbria several times when I had an ICE car, and it was still the same. The last time i did it, in 2016, it took me 8 hours just to get off the M5 due to roadworks and crashes.

We have ours (exactly the same trim) for a month now. Loving it, but range does drop significantly when it gets colder. I’ve never gotten near the claimed 300 mile range, more like 200-220 with average temperature around 8-10 degrees Celsius

Hyundai nailed it. Love the design and the interior, but my concern is the range. The temperature can drop to -20° or even lower than that where I live, and have a car with a low range would definitely be a problem. I will stick with my Santa Fe until I see it is worth trade in

The AWD version I believe comes with a heat pump, so you're not using as much resistive heat and it saves on range. That said, heat pump efficiency drops off a cliff much below freezing temps

I have seen on a couple of other videos that there is a loss of power and charging speed decline when battery temperature either too cold or too hot. Did you experience any of those problems on your 500 mile run? And if so is there an answer to this problem eg the eco blanket which is an option? Would appreciate your thoughts RSymons - great review
