Hyundai IONIQ 5 vs Kia EV6 vs Tesla Model Y |
Let’s say you’re looking to get into a nice new EV… you want plenty of space, good range, fast charging and you have a decent budget. Well, we reckon that this trio should definitely be on your shopping list.
Today, we’re taking a look at three exceptional SUVs. Two of them are coming out of Korea…the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Kia EV6. Although both share a huge amount of DNA, especially under the skin, there are some differences between them. But there’s plenty of competition in the market and the Tesla Model Y is establishing itself as a real favourite. So we’re gonna dive into the details and see how these EVs compare. Stick around for the details
So what really separates these three fantastic cars, and why would you buy one over the other? Oh man, we’re going to have to sit on the fence here, because all three cars are just so good!
Price is not a major factor as all three are so close, a mere £2,000 or so separating them. Although you can sacrifice some performance and get the cheaper Single Motor variants of the Hyundai and Kia, that actually have slightly improved range also. The Kia and Hyundai probably have the more premium feel inside, and many will respond to knowing a brand much better than the relatively new Tesla. The ride is also more comfortable, with the Tesla feeling the bumps and ramps more.
For many, the efficiency of the Tesla, coupled with the incredible Supercharger network wins out. Especially if you regularly drive long distances, there really isn’t a better road tripper. The integration of the app with the car is also superb.
For some people, space and practicality will be more important. In that case, the Tesla is much bigger, with a huge frunk also.

Ioniq 5 for me. Just does it for me. Would never by a Tesla. I don't trust Tesla (Elon mostly) and as an IT professional, I just would never feel comfortable driving around a custom linux box that Tesla has real-time root/admin access to at all times. Nope. The cult-like following that Tesla has (and seems kind of to like/demand) just turns me off as well.

Why did you dash on the charging speed for Ioniq 5 & EV 6, it goes from 10-80 % in 18 minutes while Tesla Y needs 27 minutes, suddenly those numbers were not mentioned but the numbers of the trunk capacity were. what a bad way to approach things

As I spend 2 hours a day in the car, comfort are essential. Been testing Ioniq5, Model Y and ended up ordering EV6. Model Y was like driving a tractor. Bumpy and noisy. Ioniq5 was really good, and so was the EV6. I love the Ioniq5's design, but EV6 are a better deal.

Bought the Ioniq 5. Free level 1 charger, free level 2 charger if you pay whatever it costs over $600 to put it in. 5k rebate (bought Oct 23) and a couple thou cheaper than EV6 at least here and now. Much more room inside while being a smidge smaller outside, better outward visibility. I do favor EV6 looks.

Thanks for another interesting video. I've had an e-Niro now for 4 years...a proper 'long termer'😊..but have noticed how the prices of the new Niro EV are up there with the RWD model Y now, certainly in France where I live. The hard ride and general lack of refinement is a criticism others have made of the Y but I heard that more recent German made cars use a revised suspension which rides a lot better. Just wondered what your take is on that.

We drove a German Model Y LR about 3 months ago. Certainly firmer than the competition. It didn't bother us but we see why some people aren't fans of the suspension. Thanks for the comment!

I own a Kia EV6, awd,fun to drive, especially in the sport mode, the driving experience is much like driving a gas model, so the learning curve, I think would be shorter and more convenient.

I was split between Tesla model y and Nissan ariya 87kwh, in the end the difference was that PCP from Nissan was HALF that from Tesla, the Ariya was much more comfortable and we do not do many long range drives. Was a hard choice. Good review btw, clear, main points and you cut out all the excitable crap and endless swooning over pixels or line than many other reveiwers insist on.

I'm a bit biased cuz I own one, but because I cross shopped all these vehicles, my vote goes to the Mach-E. Tie breaking factor for me was the combination of a gauge cluster, 360 camera, rear cross-traffic alerts, SiriusXM radio, and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto...all of which were on my must-have list, and none of the other cars offer all of them.

I'm going to wait for the EV9. I don't really need a 3rd row, but it looks like it might be worth waiting for. My current car is an ID4. Its problems are the stuff of legends, but since I've only had it for about 1.25 years, I can afford to wait a little longer before getting rid of it.

The difference in charging is big, because the 800 volt is that much faster on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 than a Tesla 400 volt system on public chargers. When I do charge the I5 in even 150 volt EA chargers and when it works, it's constantly showing 21 to 25 minutes to charge, depending on temperature. The Tesla, I'm getting on 250 supercharger are always showing 27 to 30 minutes charge time for similar condition (I charge to 80%). That's the difference with having driven vs owning like the author, you know the details a little bit more.

Currently in the early stages of deciding between the ev6 and the ioniq 5. I’ve commuted 90mi/day for the last 4 years in my Nissan Leaf. I need more range for cold weather driving. I’m tired of not being able to use the heater and still chance needing to charge, even with 150mi range. I know that the Kia NiroEV has an optional heat pump. Do either the ev6 or Ioniq 5 offer this option?

In America it's the 7500 tax credit for the Tesla and charging stations, that really helped them with sales and the two don't get that tax credit, but Kia and Hyundai are great EVs and they look good, and great technology so I think tax credit , will not be in the decision for most going forward, Tesla sales did drop, due to competition.

In Europe we have a a big non Tesla charging network, so Tesla chargers are not a game changer at all. Often the other networks are cheaper than Tesla, so many Tesla drivers are using the other networks too. Tesla chargers are only at the highways and so they are only relevant for longer trips. For everey day you use other options. The quality of the Teslas is very bad even the ones from Shanghai or Grünheide are not at the level of any competitor. In Germany we have mandatory car checks for safety. First one after 3 years anbd from there on every 2 years. At the first check after 3 years Tesla has a failure rate which is the badest of the complete industry. 13% of all cars have failures related to the safety. Suspension and even corossion are big points there. I hopefully get my Ioniq 5 before christmas.

So when you own them you quickly realize how much the Tesla supercharger network is a game changer if you ever travel outside your home city. The CCS and DCFC networks are just not able to complete yet. Broken and non functioning chargers are common outside of tesla. Also the ability to get OTA updates regularly which the korean cars do for only maps and radio but not really any functions, still have to go to the dealer for those. And finally Sentry mode is important to me. Not sure why all cars don't have it. These three things make the tesla better to own not just test drive, IMO. I owned an EV6 first edition from March 22 to March 23 and the $7500 tax credit helped make sure I didn't lose money when I sold it. Another thing, Tesla will hold their value much better, just check the preowned prices.

@icared4338 the European car safety body declared the Model Y as the safest car they ever tested in part because of Autopilot. The Irish also gave the Model Y its highest safety rating explicitly calling out the ADAS. You sound like a car salesman. I understand your fear of Tesla. It is a better car that costs less and is sold without dealing with sleazy car salesman.

I got the 7500 on my Hyundai I 5, bought it last June before the cut off. My husband has the LRY, I was jealous of his better technology and traded my Hyundai for a Model 3 last November. I’ve been tracking the Hyundai, It still hasn’t been sold. I was worried about the 12 V battery issue some of the Hyundai’s have been experiencing. I loved the car, but Tesla has a proven track record and over the air updates that Hyundai lacks. I haven’t regretted the trade in.

EV6 & IONIQ5 very cluttered exterior that makes no sense. Duck tail? My problem is the Korean cars still have fuses and a lot more failure points when manufactured. Hyundai and Kia is making these as compliance cars. Not manufacturing enough to sell losing money on each car. BTW the dealers add $18,000 to the MSRP
