I have 150K miles on my 2011 normally aspirated Sonata and I have never replaced it. Transmission has never missed a beat. Drive in Houston in hot weather, but I will do it this weekend. Thanks for the video, very detailed.

i know this video is 5 years old, however one thing i will mention to everyone getting ready to do this is if you have a kia optima 2.0T (same eng/trans as the hyundai in this video (2011 - 2015 optimas)) i had a problem with 2 things 1) i measured how much came out. Approximately 90 - 95% of a gallon marked the bottle then used an identical bottle to put back in..... once i started pouring the vehicle kept "burping" or whatever you want to call it and would spill fluid i solved this by getting a funnel tube that has twist shut and open capability and i adjusted flow to a very slow rate and solved the issue... 2) the fill line plug at the bottom almost immediately started draining fluid after pouring (less than 1/2 quart) i knew this couldnt be right since i measured roughly 8 times that much came out. yes the vehicle was level when i started pouring, i tried with both the vehicle running and not running to pour, lastly i ended up having to put the fluid in with that cap screwed in since it would all just leak out. I will drive it around for a day so the fluid can get everywhere its supposed to and then ill open that up and check it when level... Lastly the caps and fill plugs on mine were all metal and there was no rubber O ring on my fill plug. also my bolts were 24mm for both the fluid level and drain plugs. The fill plug was 22mm... I hope this helps someone in the future. :)

Thanks Richard for the video; it's amazing people are still commenting about 3 years after you posted it but that should show how indispensable things like this are for people who want to do it themselves. I did the drain/refill this past weekend on my 2013 Sonata after watching your video a few times and it went without issues. I actually used genuine Hyundai SP4-M fluid and used up about 3.5 quarts (of the 7.5 US Qts the transmission takes). Drain plug had a ton of ferrous material and there's no way you want that floating around in transmission. Again, much appreciated!

The procedure written by Hyundai/Kia seems to suggest that the oil level check procedure needs to be done WHILE the car is RUNNING. It appears that in the video, the car is not running.

The mechanics tell me they have to use a machine to do the fluid change correctly to flush all the old fluid out but I have heard flushing it is bad on the transmission.

@@wieds9852 You are correct. Do the change, drive for 500 miles and repeat the process, you will be good to go another 30K miles.

Since the 2012 Kia Forte is very difficult to fill without removing the full level hole due to a vapor lock when filling AND the Forte correct level is when there is a "small" stream leaking out of the full level hole I came up with a work around. I took a 12 inch piece of small hose (like the ones used for lawn mower gas lines) and curled the end slightly to allow it to be pushed into the fill hole and snake it to the driver side about 2-3 inches. Then I used a fill funnel like normal and this allowed me to fill it at a slow rate of about a pencil size stream (which is pretty quick). I used the amount I drained out to determine how much to put in. I got out 3.5 quarts and replaced it with 3.7 quarts. Also you do not have to remove the plastic panel on the bottom since it is much smaller and does not cover the 24mm drain plug.

Yea, I understand they need to make money but come on $300!!! I could see $150 tops and I would consider that but doing it myself would still save me money over that service by about 3 times. Thanks.

Thanks so much. Just came back from the dealer, got a cost of $250 to flush the transmission. I was under the impression that the trans was a sealed unit and required some special equipment. Will be doing this needed maintenance soon. My 2011 2.4L Sonata has 76,500 miles on it.

Richard, been following your procedure to the tee. Done several drain & fills at 60k, but returned to the hyundai fluid on the last. Since then every 20k because of hard driving in the FL heat. In the meantime got 180k and it shifts like on day 1. Thanks!

This procedure is identical for 2012 and up Azera as well. No need to measure old oil as some people have suggested. Fill till it pours out the level check hole. Do not pour oil in with the level check plug installed. You'll make a mess! Hardest part of the job is taking the plastic tray off the bottom of the engine. Not difficult, just a lot of screws/bolts. Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic Import Transmission Fluid can be used. Walmart carries it for less than $20 for a 5 quart container.

Richard thank you... I bought a 2011 sonata 71000 ... Drove it 25000 now sits at 96000 . 2.4 liter. Transmission seemed to not shift like normal at around 94000 . I'm assuming fluid has never been changed . After some research and your video I decided to change fluid myself. I wish I took pics, the drain plug magnet was loaded with shavings and the fluid has to be the worst I've per seen. I do most of my maintenance my self and wish I had ignored the owners manual when I bought the car and changed it immediately. I can not believe Hyundai really believes this is a maintenance free transmission. I'm on my third drain and fill and plan on a fourth drove 1000 in between and got the same results as you and transmission is back to normal.. Hoping for 160000 : ) .... One piece of info for you ..my transmission had a metal pan on the side of the transmission rather than a plastic one , and the over fill plug was the same as the drain plug minus the magnet . the fill tube on top seemed smaller I had to fill much slower than your video shows . So anyone with these same parts fill slowly and avoid the mess .... Lol

You are welcome. No need to change the transmission fluid? I beg to differ. You and I both wish we had ignored the service manual when we bought the car and mine only had 37,000 miles. I will never make that mistake again. I will change all the fluids the day I get my next car. When I filled mine the overflow plug was not installed so the fluid flowed through quickly but when I topped it off after you seal the transmission drain plug then it gets difficlut to fill. One of the best videos I have eve seen on DIY car maintenance. Followed procedure and even linked Hyundai's procedures. Good lighting and camera placement, excellent, thorough narrative (maybe too thorough, if there is such a thing), proper torque settings (but come on...34.6 or whatever...I have enough difficulty seeing the tick marks on mine...there is no 0.6). I can NOT believe how dirty yours was after the first change tho. In doing trans fluid changes on probably 15 different cars, including neglected ones, it is usually cherry red after a change. Never muddy red like that. How does a basic family car beat up trans fluid so bad that you have to do several changes at 60k to get it all out? That's nuts. I wish they'd bring back dipticks. So much easier to check level and condition than taking off a belly pan and leveling the whole car on ramps and stands.

Do you have a similar link to Elantra's of the same year?? I went to your link, but it is Sonata only and the options there did not take me to a master Hyundai manual for all models. However, My setup on my 2013 Elantra looks identical, so I'm sure the procedure is as well

If the transmission is the same the procedure will be the same. Take a look at your owners manual for the ATF type and amount to be sure. This Sonata was a 2.0L Turbo and maybe the extra kick from the turbo was a factor in it getting dirtier quicker (just speculation on my part). Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. You should save your old transmission fluid. If the transmission acts up, drain the transmission fluid and replace it with the old fluid. Wise words from Scotty! 👍👍👍

Thanks for sharing this! It helped me out a lot. I have a base model 2.4. Everything was the same except the fill plug on the top was metal on my car and had aluminum gasket instead of O-ring. Also, the plug on the side was metal and required the 22mm socket to remove. I used KIA Type 4M ATF which is what is spec'd for the same generation Optima but at half the price of the Hyundai branded stuff.

Rich let me share a thought I have . . . for 45 yrs. I have used a Fumoto Valve with nipple in place of an oil plug on every car I have ever owned. Once you put the valve with a crush washer *you never have to remove it* until you sell the car . . . then you put your oem drain plug back in. You cut a small piece of clear hose . . . slip it on the nipple . . . and run it directly into an empty jug . . . not one drop hits the driveway . . . oil filter is a different story/procedure. So now with the pain that these sealed A/T pose I want to do the same Fumoto Valve thing with my A/T. You mention the size of the socket needed to get the drain plug out but that does not reveal the mm size of the bolt itself . . . does it? Next time you or one of your followers get your A/T drain plug out maybe we can determine what mm size hole it fits . . . then check with Fumoto to see if they have one. My procedure would be to 1) Pull the fill plug 2) Drain using the Fumoto into an empty jug. 3) Sit both jugs together and pour off the new jug until they are even . . . then add. Do not use a tight fitting funnel and create a vacuum around the fill hole . . . pour slow and in small amounts or get a cap that has a small hose coming off of it. Yes . . . leave the middle (fluid level) plug in undisturbed . . . it is not necessary IMO because you are putting the same exact amount in . . . that came out. ***However I suggest if you do it hot Let The Hot Fluid Cool*** before you make your measurement in comparison to your fresh fluid jug. Because hot fluid expands a little when hot. The only way you can go wrong is that your fluid level was off to begin with . . . so every now and then . . . pull the middle plug . . . level the car and check. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the excellent vid. I don't know if this is already in the comments (there are way too many to read them all) but I change all my transmissions 3 times because assuming you change half of the total volume each time, then first time gets you to 50% change, 2nd time makes that 75%, 3rd time makes it 87.5% and that is good enough for me. A fourth would go to 93.75% so the returns are diminishing fast at that point.

I looked on Alldata for the AT Fluid Fill procedure 2012 Sorento and they didn't have one so You Tube and Google to the Rescue. The Transmission is the Same. Here is another good tip- Measure what you Drain out of the Transmission and put the same amount back in unless the Transmission had a leak than it will be off. Great video, very well done. You followed the Hyundai method of doing the service. As for myself, the guy in my home garage. I may try a different method. Measure exactly what you drain out of the transmission into a 5 quart container. Then fill the transmission with exactly what you took out of it. That way you don't need to mess with a thermometer or the check level plug. I have never seen that setup on any other import car or domestic, and I've changed trans fluid on many of them. Also I may not even jack the rear of the car up to get level. If you drain it, and clean up that magnet you are ahead of 90 percent of the population anyways who never does trans service. At the price of maxlife fluid, you can do this service every couple years and its fairly simple.

Here is the thing with doing the replace the amount that came out of the transmission, what if the transmission was improperly filled (over or under). By doing it your way you would be essentially (over or under) filling it by just replacing the same amount that came out. Thanks.

Many European cars have the overflow system of some variation. I happen to like it. Overfilling is very common (the "more is better mentality"). Overflow ports prevent this.

I think in my case, I bought the car brand new. Therefore, factory is pretty precise, and shifting has never been a problem. I have a 2013 Elantra with 60K, and everything you displayed (Excellent job by the way) is the same. So, I measured what came out, and fill exactly. I do agree with your assessment especially if you bought the car used. I also, was amazed how dirty the oil was and will redo at 30K. I used the Trans oil specified by Hyundai, but maybe next time, I'll used what you bought, but I heard some bad stories, and possibly, there just that, stories. Thanks for the excellent job done on this.

Great video. I think you should plug the hole when you get a light flow before you get no flow at all from the port hole. Additional change is very much advised. Just like in this video. Since a lot of AT fluid remains in the torque converter.

Gotcha Richard, no accessible filter available for the trans ... I did like how You showed the correct methods and even properly torqued the drain & filler plugs and used a non-contact thermometer to determine proper fluid levels!!! I would take my car and / or send friends to You anytime!!!

I'm taking my 2010 Sonata GLS to Valvoline tomorrow for new fluids for the transmission and radiator. I hate paying someone to do maintenance that I've been able to do by myself in the past, but arthritis in my back limits me greatly these days. Wish me luck that they do it right.

I've put 150 miles on my car since it was serviced yesterday and have checked it for leaks, missing caps, and correct fluid levels. Besides being a little messy, Valvoline did a good job. I have to say I miss doing all my own work.

Update!!! (2011 Hyundai Sonata) Just came back from a long trip to Missouri from California. I think we drove over 3500 miles and car drove like a champ. Re-flushed the trans for the heck of it and trans oil still was very clean. I hope the guy (William Waters) didn't put regular oil instead of the trans fluid, bottles look exactly the same!! Anyhow, wanted to tell you thanks again and hope everyone has the same results as I did..

The Hyundai transmission fluid used to be overspec'ed to compensate for their crappy transmissions in the old days, and so they can be finicky with what you use. The Hyundai fluid is just private label made by another company and overcharged, this Valvoline Maxlife is much better and the best you can use for it, and also much cheaper.

Son's of B's at the dealer wanted $19 bucks a quart for the trans fluid and told me I needed 10 qts if I wanted to flush it right ($190.00)+tax just for the fluid!!.. I bought 2 ea. 1 gallon Max Life containers at Wally World for total of $34.00 and flushed it twice for a clean fluid replacement.. Car runs and shifts very smooth.... Contacted Valvoline Customer Service and adding this fluid "will not affect the warranty of the transmission as it is meets all Hyundai and Kia certifications". Thanks again!!!

+briones93 It's crazy what they want for this service. They quoted me $230.00 to do mine. I have yet to spend that much and I have done SIX drain and fills and have crystal clear fluid (I am a bit OCD on this). Thanks for the feedback on the warranty. I did read their warranty statement before using the fluid but it's nice to know that they verified that it does not void the warranty.

Well this video is a real help,to see the location of the plugs! I have a 2013 Elantra, same style of transmission, I drained mine early with only 25K, I was curious about the oil condition, it actually looked like new and red but there was some dust on the drain plug. I used Motul synthetic type v1, ok for the Hyundai. The filler plug and level plug, being plastic need to be only snug, tightened gently.

I had a Hyundai Service Rep tell me this Trans never needs maintenance for the life of the car, which I questioned, but he was adamant and said they don’t even service them. Checked around, and I was misinformed, they do service them but they do say it is a sealed transmission so maintenance isn’t always necessary.... Personally I couldn’t disagree more, transmission fluid breaks down, gets burnt and it does get dirty, so go figure!! My Toyota Tacoma also has a sealed Auto Transmission and Toyota recommends a system flush and full replacement of fluid at 80K Mile intervals.

I haven't done the ATF change as I have a 2014 Hyundai Accent with only 7,000 miles but I like to research in advance before I attempt any work. Guess what after looking at your tutorial my Accent is designed the same so now I can breathe easyknowing that it will be a sinch to replace the fluid whenever I want. Thank you.

Hello @richard Lloyd I see you are checking the fluid with the vehicle off. Manual says start the car. But it never says to shut it off again to do the measuring. I know on other cars fluid should be checked with the vehicle running.

I do with the engine off and have done so on three Hyundai and KIA vehicles a total of 50,000 miles to this point without issue. You can do it any way you wish but I know what works for me therefore I see no reason to alter the procedure but again if you wish to leave the engine on while checking that's your prerogative. Richard Lloyd hi I got 2017 Hyundai elentra automatic so the procedure is pretty much similar opening the cap underneath like I wanted to know for leveling the car is it ok to use the jack on the rear while having the car front side on the ramp the only thing I’m really getting confuse about is they amount of transmission oil requires the how many litres do I need in total at once if I get it done instead of couple times if the car is not level any other way you recommend thanks

+UreaSmith I have been using it for a year 15,000 miles with out any problems. Check your owners manual to make sure you are using the correct fluid. It may be different for the 2007 Sonata. Thanks.

Richard Lloyd I did a drain and fill on Monday and drove 100 miles since. So far so good. Oil was dark and nasty so will do as you did and repeat the process a couple times.

Would this step be the same on 2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS? Excellent video angle and well as this wonderful tips. Being a mother with only daughters, I would say it will be a nightmare on Ford HD F150 pick up soon than doing on my other daughter Tucson. When I was young, my dad, also named Richard, taught me how to fix racing cars. I hated at first, but when he forced to me to prove that I was good or better than most men in the racing pit. I just ran and hugged & said, "Thank you. I love you, Dad!" Thank you for taking your time out & doing these wonder videos for people, Richard.

angelisone You are most welcome. My daughter loves fixing things too. I show her what she needs to do but only when she gets stuck. If the Tucson GLS has the same transmission I would think the procedure would be the same. Make sure you get the car level before draining and filling it as well check your owners manual for the correct fluid too. You could always call your local Hyundai dealer and ask to verify too. You have to let the old fluid drain out first. Before adding a half of a quart to a quart to flush out the old fluid and gunk in the system. It works for more than just motor oil changes. Most transmission require removal of the pan and draining the old fluid because there is no drain bolt. Then its best to change the filter gasket and fluid. Jiffy lube had a transmission fluid flush and radiator flush machine when worked there both times I worked there. The flush machine work well at removing the old fluids.

Hey Richard, I love your videos, thanks for taking the time to be so thorough. Quick question, after you had the car back off the ramps and jack stands, was it difficult to get back under it to remove the fill level check plug? My sonata is pretty low to the ground and I am big dude, so it isn't really easy to get under there.

If you take the air intake off like I did on the video, you can actually put a 3/8 inch ratchet right into the center of the fill level check plug from the top of the engine. Make sure you are turning it the correct direction as it it made of plastic. It should come off (counter clockwise) quite easily. I actually put back on the ramps and re-leveled the car by jacking up the rear every time. Make sure the car is level when you check the level. BTW I am not a big guy and still find this car is very low to the ground. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Just watch your video Thank you. l have 2014 2.4 GDI eng. Santa Fe Sport. Just came back from dealer got there free oil change, l asked about the price on the oil change on the transmission when it reaches 60.000 miles, it blew my mind $390.00 + tax. Just went out and checked my car and l don't have to remove anything to the to get to top plug (fill plug) could'nt find the lower one that shows full level but it has to be in the same spot as your. Thanks for the video, will be doing mine when it comes time. And the dealer say you could go 100.000 miles befor you need to change the oil, but when your warranty runs out and at 100.010 miles your trans. goes sour the transmission job comes out of your pocket.

Lionel Berthelon You are welcome. I wish I had changed it when I bought the car at 37,000 miles. It was very dirty when I drained it at 60,000. I would say don't go more than 30,000 miles before you change it but I like my fluids very clean. The total cost of one fluid change for me is under $40 for two gallons of fluid. Thanks.

I have a scangauge II amzn.to/1wqadnN and I can read it there but really all you need to do is drive the car up to operating temperature (188 F). In my car the temperature settles one block from the middle of the temperature gauge on the instrument panel. Your transmission will be more or less at the right temperature after you drive the car for 10 minutes. I am assuming you don't live in a sub zero or super hot environment which would affect the temperature. The transmission has an aluminium case which should you could use any kind of temperature gun on amzn.to/1tnlkkx to check the temperature too. I think I am going to buy one as it's only $17.00 and I have wished that I had one for a few different projects now and it is way cheaper than the Scangauge II. I will check how long it takes the transmission to get to 140F and get back to you on what I find too. Thanks.

Thanks for this my wife's cars like this same year i hate it. I drive a 03 Toyota Avalon it has a drain plug and a dip stick takes 15 min to change. I hate the sealed transmission design it's all a money gimmick

Isn't the final check supposed to be done with the engine running? The only manufacturer that has you check level with engine off is Honda. In the manual it does not say turn off engine after doing the shifting.

That fluid is not available here in Canada (at the moment or will never). I purchased Motomaster Multi LV ATF which was on sale 2 weeks ago and it was still on the high side at CA$25.00 per 5ltr, and it also have markings for Hyundai's SP-IV. I'll do my 2nd change in a few weeks once the weather becomes really warm and sunny.

just make sure when you change out your fluid make sure you also change out your transmission filter that's located exactly where all those boats are at in the very front where your level plug is out it's a big black thing take all the screws that surrounded all around there and you see your transmission filter if not things could get much worse or towards the future

+Ali Shaeb There is an internal mesh filter but it requires disassembly of the transmission to get at it. Hyundai does not recommend changing it in their service manual. www.hsguide.net/repair_procedures-231.html Thanks.

If you pour a half quart to a quart of atf fluid in while the. drain bolt or drain pan is off. It will flush out the excess gunk and old fluid some. If there is no drain bolt then the pan would have to removed. I used this. procedure when I worked at Jiffy Lube and my own personal vehicles with motor oil changes when the motor oil looked looked dark when it was draining.

Hi Richard, Thanks for this video it helps a lot! Theres not much information out there. So, I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot 2.4l with the Hyundai trans the exact transmission being the 6 Speed automatic. However, after I drained the transmission(Only 3qts came out) I pumped the new ATF Valvoline Max Life "oil level plug "on the front of the transmission. I dont know if thats ok but it starts running out after about 3qts. Richard I thought I would mention mine also has two plugs on the transmission exactly like the drain plug 24mm drivers side up high near the wheel well. I dont know if I have a fill hole "Eyelite" near the intake but I will check right now.

Hi Richard, thank you for the video. I’d like to ask you: how is the max life fluid holding up? how many miles have you gone with it? I ask because i’m a bit wary of using a non OE fluid that meets such a large amount of different specs. Especially since hyundai’s own technical bulletins mention that SP III and SP IV are not replacements of each other. On the other hand, if the OE fluid is extraordinarily expensive.
