Hi John, I’m in the U.K. and am going to test drive a 1.6 turbo petrol plug in hybrids next week. The top of the range model here is named Ultimate. I’m really hoping I’m going to like the drive because I like the new design language of the Tucson. It is also 4x4 which is good for where I live because the long winters here can be very cold and icy so the added traction will come in handy. Great and very interesting review. Thank you for all your hard work and commitment into helping us motoring folk make better, more informed decisions. Greetings from Cumbria in the U.K. stay safe and well.

Drove the petrol and wasn’t impressed. End up buying turbo diesel and wow. Chalk and cheese. Better fuel and so much faster. The torque is brilliant. Recommend to spend extra and go diesel as heaps more power and better economy

We had a 2011 IX35 2lt turbo diesel, they called the Tucson that for a couple of years, it was a great car. Plenty of go, very comfortable and we actually took it places an AWD car should never have gone, we only sold it because it couldn't tow a large van. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

Could you do a video on how to set up a car? Where wing mirrors should be, seat setting (too close to wheel etc), anti slip settings (whether they should be on or off and for what circumstances). I'm getting overwhelmed by so many gizmos. Maybe you could also suggest what tech extras to avoid. Id also be interested in your recommendations on towing setups including suspension airbags, sway bars, balancing systems, etc

The last car I had with actual flat-folding rear seats was a USDM '89 Ford Escort hatchback. They did it by hinging the seat bottom at the front, so it swung forwards against the lower back of the front seats and out of the way of the rear seat backs when they folded down. I'm not sure why this isn't implemented any more, but I could probably guess there's some sort of regulatory thing that precludes it making a comeback.

Hi John, thank you for this report, I bought a Tucson in late 2019 and I am very happy with it. I've been looking at this as our next step, and I've noticed something that concerns me about the rear design - indicator lights are down very low. This seems to be something being used more and more in vehicles and I feel it is not a good design. What are your thoughts on having indicator lights down low rather than where they have traditionally been, integrated with the tail/brake lights?

TBH I just bought the new Hyundai Tucson base Model with N line and I am more than satisfied. Every one just talks about how NA engine is and all that. But really wanna ask how fast you can go. I already got 2 speeding fines on my Tuscon lol. What I am trying to say is you can it a by turbo and what not. But at the end of the day family guys like me drive their family around and the 2 Lt engine is more than sufficient. I live in and around city so tbh really doesn't matter if I drive 1.2 lt or 2 Lt or 1.6 Lt turbo ,they are all the same . Trust me go and drive and think what and why you need the bigger engine for and then go for it 😉

On their website both the Kamiq and Kodiaq have options to add on extras etc however nothing for the Karoq. The sportline isn't even on the website. Btw do you rate it? Cheers mate.

Edited the press kit from "CAR" to SUV", calling it "not" car and then proceed to call it a "car" a short time later. Sorry John, couldn't resist :-) Love 99% of your content usually and content here is great. Like the conversational style as a nice change from scripted too. Not 'really' a big fan of near-2hrs of chat though - not bite-size enough for a lunch break at work so on balance I prefer the 20 min vids. Keep up the great work ol' C.

I wonder how the LCD Display will fare in direct sunlight and heat as there is no binnacle. As a Coach Driver, we use tablets for ticketing and if left in the sun without a cover it warns Overheated and we have to wait for it cool down. Hence we have a cover to slip over to prevent this.

On the point of 44:00 think of it this way; The engine is most efficent at around 4000rpm and less efficient when idiling, taking off, cruising or doing anything other than running at 4000rpm. The torque converter is also a point of loss. I believe (i.e. my opion is not based in concrete facts but I have it anyway) is that it would be most efficient to have an AC and a smallish battery (think range 10km) that is powered by the petrol engine running for 3 out of every 10 minutes.

Hey John, on the subject of wing mirror adjustment, I have followed your advice Dicta Boelke style. Since receiving my new Kia Sportage, I noticed I can't adjust the mirrors out far enough; my outlook must include my own car. I think the magnification effect caused by increasing the mirror's field of view is a mild but increasing annoyance, point in case, having to recalibrate distance perception. If it wasn't for blindspot monitoring, cameras, and proximity sensors, manoeuvring the car is somewhat trickier and less confidence inspiring. I'd love to know your views on this.

John, do you believe the Tucson will be released in a true N spec? Aka a 2L twin turbo, not N line. There has been some specs for a Tucson N leaked on a Korean website apparently. However when the lady and I were at a Hyundai dealership on the weekend (coincidentally when this was streamed, sorry!) the GM was very confident that the hybrid models will be released next year and had ordered some already but he knew nothing whatsoever of a N model. He said that if there was one to be released it would need to be on a redeveloped chassis as the ‘22 Tucson ‘chassis would not be able to handle it’ and would be towards the end of next year, if at all. Please, your thoughts.

Cyberpunk, retro wave, 80’s retro in general is popular at the moment. From video games, music, even to the humble hungry jacks yumbo. If your main market is gen Y then you will probably want to tap into the current trend. Looks like Hyundai is tapping into this trend a little.

The design...this is a bit of a thinker. I'm looking forward to seeing it in person but my initial impression after watching a few reviews is that a dozen people had a hand in designing the exterior. It's almost as if they all took a run-up at the clay shell and made their own cut. One person added a swoop, another a crease, then some dude just took a knife to it and so on. In the end, an overseeing eye ran across it and tried to cohesively bring it all together. Two of my brothers are looking at all the alternatives in this segment and they're taking a keen approach to the new Tucson. Being a bit of a risk taker myself, I've suggested an oddball vehicle in the Alfa Stelvio (I personally think its gorgeous). I know it's a bit more expensive and there is the laden risk of after sales support and parts availability...but I have always approached life with a solid grounding in the understanding that the meaning of life is...death (I forget which smart cookie came up with that one). Hence, what the heck, just enjoy yourself and risks be damned!

I own a 7 speed dct in as cerato GT. "Don't inch uphill"? Great advice except how do you reverse a trailer into your driveway? I can't reverse my trailer into the yard EVEN EMPTY without a smell of burnt dct clutch. And i am okay at reversing -- i used to reverse the trailer up a steep winding drive foot-off- clutch with a manual v6 magna ... but with the dct i don't get to choose foot-off- clutch. The computer insists on slipping the clutch and it is a truly horrific bit of engineering if you need to tow anything. Not great in stop start uphill traffic either but just horrible for manoeuvring a trailer (or reversing slowly up the drive into a cluttered garage).

I would argue that the push button transmission will be absolutely dead easy to use off the bat if not acclimatise muscle memory to within an hour of driving the vehicle for any one with 2 brain cells to rub together. The drive button has a protruding bump. One button above is neutral, two above is reverse. It’s as simple as that. It’s probably the easiest form of brail around. And I’m not sure what high intensity driving someone is doing to not be able to remove their eyes from the road when going from forward to reversing. Some sort of high speed 180 manoeuvre from forward facing to reverse without breaking momentum?

I often get asked why we own Hyundai vehicles when I was a GM guy for 30+ years . I put down a 1k deposit about 6 weeks ago for a turbo petrol highlander (new) Tucson. The other variants have been released this week, but there is a delay with this one, and they won't share why. Hyundai has confirmed the vehicle is in the country and passed customs. They tell me the delay is 30+ days (from now). I assume this model hasn't passed a local spec test. Should I be worried that the secrecy of the delay spells a problem going forward with the turbo petrol version?

@@beedzoful that colour is exactly what excites me about the tiguan...I care more about colour than the design of a car! I'm probably in the minority, it I'd take an inferior car in a colour I love over a better car in a colour I hate.

John, Have you had any communication from Hyundai or Kia on the Wireless CarPlay issues (constant drop outs ) plaguing their MY21 base models with the 8” screen? My daughter purchased an I30 on my advice/ previous experience, but the handling of this issue by Hyundai Australia has been nothing short of appalling. The CarPlay function does not work and there is no wired option in the current 8” screen equiped models. My estimate of 30% of I30’s in the last 7 months being base models means there are at least 3,500 upset new car owners in Australia. This does not include other Hyundai and Kia vehicles with the same screen. How Hyundai Australia corporate has dropped the ball so badly on this many new car owners is unfathomable. Regular and structured communication to the owners of impacted new vehicles would have been a small cost in comparison to the legal sharks starting to circle re this issue. There are owners claiming Hyundai has refunded / purchased back vehicles based on this issue and ACCC repair, replace or refund laws. Any updates or influence on resolution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Sando68

test drove a 2L highlander on sunday in sydney and here are some initial thoughts. very spacious internally, externally looks great. the 2L na engine and auto box is crap. 1.6t is 2-3 months away. the tech is great but you soon forget about it and focus on the driving experience (lack of in this car). felt the mazda cx5 gt turbo awd was a better car in this regard. cx5 refinement internally is better (though it has less space and tech isnt up there). overall i can see where they're heading with the design but it lacks the refinement of other brands. for the same money i would just get the cx5 gt turbo. the only saving grace for the tucson is if they introduce a full fruit N version with a 2.5l turbo with 8sp auto or wet dct.

What a shame the 1.6T only has 132kW. Even their regular Kona 1.6T has 146kW. WTF? After 2 Subies passed in on their latest Outback due to no 2.4T. I love the new Tucson look but will be waiting for the N.

a 929 to the cape ,that would of been fun. i heard on the grape vine trition will be a hybrid in a few years. diesel be around for ever, trucks and trains. our main bulk hauling transport. my experience with new diesels is my parents 3 prong suppository , twin turbo couple and my 2019 trition. i reckon they both go like a shower of shit and could rip electric hesus off the cross. i had a 2003 hyundai elantra elete, was a bloody great till car. fun pocket rocket, sort of reminded me of my 80 Gemini . without the rwd fun. i had the toby price trition , for me. no one else, i liked the package. it had all i wanted ,just added a towbar and roof racks. only time i ever had comments was at the beach camping around the fire. they ask is it nice ,i reply yes nice. i payed a heap extra for a stickker. my opinion toyota dropped the ball when they dropped the 6 cylinder turbo diesel, it was the perfect big 4wd motor. why 100 series cruisers are still stupid prices. dammit i want to visit Canada now

John, I'm yet to see any so called motoring journalists criticise Hyundai for sending Straya the world's leftovers in terms of the New Tuscan (Hyundai must give everyone good perks)...a 2L Highlander that is front wheel drive for $50k+ on-road, c'mon?!!! Why aren't we seeing at least the Hybrid like other markets, especially when the most sought after power train in the most popular SUV in Straya is a Hybrid (Rav4) as I understand it? That's just a big FU to the Australian market! Am I missing something why they wouldn't bring the Hybrid here?

Reminds me of the kind of guy who brags that he likes a simple car and doesn't mind manually inserting a key in the door lock, and then once inside reaching across the cabin to open the opposite door. Crazy

As well as using solar or wind to power the production of "green" hydrogen, Australia has a immense availability of geothermal power. It is virtually untapped and almost zero interest from the marketing department in the federal government - otherwise known as our politicians. It is truly time to MALS.

My sister just leased the latest Tucson on sale in the USA (2021?). She hates it. Its the 4-cylinder and has about as much power as a riding lawnmower. Shes frightened to drive it on the highway because it is almost too dangerous to merge with quickness on an entrance ramp. I rode shotgun and can see why. When you floor it, the transmission lunges down several gears but won't even engage and kick whatever it has in the pants. It just chokes on its own vomit and leaves you gimping the pedal around until you can find a gear it will accelerate in. Ill be shocked if she keeps this thing. Its so bad she wants her 2010 Ford Explorer back which was a POS in its own right. There's gutless and then there's this Tucson. Yeah the warranty is great, but she calls this thing her Flintstone car because it will only go as fat as your feet with push it.

Retardistan Tucson’s are made in the US (Alabama). Pretty much everything automotive made in America is built to a price and generally inferior. South Korean made Hyundai’s (like Australia gets) are comparatively pricey, but better made from better materials.
