This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson compact SUVs. Both are offered with gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The Sportage and Tucson share the same platform and powertrains including, a gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The gas model has a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. The Hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains have a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid has a combined 227 horsepower with standard AWD. The Tucson PHEV has a combined 261 horsepower with 53 km/33 miles of EV range. The Sportage PHEV total output has not been announced yet, we assume it will be the same as the Tucson and the Sorento PHEV’s with 261 horsepower. It will have a targeted EV range of 51 km/32 miles and standard AWD. The Sportage plug-in hybrid will arrive this summer. Although these two SUV’s have plenty in common, they are very different looking. The Sportage has a sharp and strong presence with a tiger nose grille floating design and unique boomerang daytime running lights. The Tucson a distinct and sharp looking exterior with angular body panels, a long hood, short overhangs and a front radiator grille with available dark chrome accents. Both gas models come standard with 17” wheels, available 19” wheels. They both have similar standard features, an 8” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front cloth seats and a manual driver and passenger seat. Available features include, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, a power driver’s seat and wireless charger. The Sportage has a larger available touchscreen and digital driver display at 12.3”, the Tucson 10.25”. In Canada, the Tucson gas model is missing quite a few features that the Sportage gas model has available. There is no offering on any trim of driver seat memory, a power tailgate, ventilated front seats, heated rears seats, a power passenger seat, the larger 10.25” touchscreen with navigation and surround view monitor. These features are available on the Tucson Hybrid and PHEV models. In the US, the gas model specs are different many of these features are available in a package or on the higher trims. Sportage AWD starts at $30,395 CAD/$27,790 USD, the Tucson $31,955 CAD/$27,300 USD. Sportage Hybrid $35,995 CAD/$27,290 USD, Tucson $41,051 CAD/$29,750 USD.Tucson plug-in hybrid $45,651 CAD/$35,400 USD. There is no pricing yet for the Sportage PHEV.

To sum it up Tuscon exterior is better while Sportage interior is better

This is a year late comment so maybe completely irrelevant lol. But I completely disagree, I think the Tucson’s front end looks really atrocious (again personal opinion) with its segmented head lights. The sportage is busy and not as cohesive I’ll give it that. But at least it doesn’t remind me of a bee hive lol. As for the interior I’m mostly partial to the sportage, however I’m not a fan of rotary shifters and the lack of hard buttons for the dash. The power button being in a hot traffic area too where it increases the risk of it being hit in traffic also isn’t my favorite

Thanks for the great reviews. We just bought the 2022 Tucson a week ago and absolutely love it. We also really liked the Sportage, and between the two it was pretty much a tie in all regards, with the Sportage slightly tipping the scale slightly with the futuristic looking one piece dash and infotainment system. However, Kia wanted $3,500K over sticker for the car, and we got the comparable Tucson Limited for sticker, so in that regard, it was a no-brainer $3,500 savings. In the U.S,, all those features on the Tucson which you said were not available are certainly available on the mid level (SEL + Convivence pkg.) and the Limited trims for the gas powered cars. We were looking for hybrid models, but they were absolutely no where to be found. We have been car shopping for the last 5 months, and your (entertaining and informative )videos have really helped us along the way, giving us great information and allowing us to make informed decisions and comparisons. The Tucson won in the end, but the Sportage. the Forester, the Rogue were also in the final choices, and I think we would have been happy with any of them, but the cost over sticker and availability were deciding factors.

We were in the same situation for my wife a couple of months ago. Test drove them back to back. My wife paid the same over sticker because she couldn’t stand the push button shifter in the Hyundai, or the touch buttons for a bunch of things like radio volume. Both are nice vehicles though!

Really enjoy your reviews. I am presently in Chiang Mai, Thailand, returning to U.S. towards the end of the year. After this review, I am leaning towards the Sportage, once they make the plug-in available. The interior of the Sportage does it for me. Again, great job on your reviews, both informative and entertaining. Take care.

My wife and I picked the Tucson Limited PHEV, as we took delivery of one just over two weeks ago (I ordered it on June 6, 2021). If the Sportage PHEV was available at the time, it would have been a very hard choice, as I like design features of both. However, the Tucson PHEV is absolutely fantastic so far, and because my wife does such a good job of charging up the battery, we're getting 105mpg in it.

I've had a 2022 Tucson Hybrid Luxury trim since end of June 2021 (totally lucked out and was able to get it immediately) and love it! PHEV wasn't available at the time or else I'd have probably sprung for that. I really like the screens setup in the Sportage, but I am also really happy to have the infotainment in the dash and not on top of the dash like in some of the others I tested (Rogue, Rav4, CX5). I also thought the push button transmission would be an issue for me but I got used to it way faster than I expected to the point that I don't miss having a tradition shifter sticking up in the middle of my car, or having to clean around it. Between the exterior styling, great views across the dash and the panoramic roof being larger than other I drove, I've been super happy with the choice. I like the Sportage a lot too. Would be a lot tougher if shopping the two against each other but I think the Tucson styling would still win out for me. I also went from a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee and have waaaay more room in the Tucson...which seemed crazy to me! Car shopping is more fun than I realized (especially after over 10 years - so many changes!) and agree with your comment that you'll never get everything you want in one and can't go wrong with either of these. Love these reviews and comparisons!

I own a 2022 Tucson SEL and a 2023 Sportage X-Line. Both are US. Models. Both cars have great features for the money and are fun to drive. No rear view mirror option on the sportage was disappointing but the panoramic roof and rain sensing wipers are available at this trim level which was a bonus I couldn't get on the SEL trim Tucson. The leatherette seats of the Sportage are super comfortable. Remote start on the fob is nice too. I love the wireless connection on the Tucson (does not have nav as you stated) X-Line has nav and wired connection. The interior of the Sportage is noticeably quieter than my Tucson. My Tucson has cloth interior vs my Sportage leatherette. Perhaps the material helps to absorb some that noise? I like them both but of the models that I have, I prefer the Sportage. Great review guys!

Great review. Love the banter at the end. I’m looking to move my 21 Toyota Venza Limited hybrid for the Sportage SX Prestige hybrid. The ECVT in the Venza, limited cargo/ back seat space and haphazardly designed controls are my main reasons. Like Andrea said, there is NO perfect vehicle especially at this price point. Either of these 2 are way less $ than the Venza even at their MSRP. If I can move the Venza @ pocket 4-5 grand I’ll do the Sportage SX Prestige hybrid (Andrea’s way of saying it). Cheers and Happy moms day to all!

As I posted on your review, I bought the Kia Sportage X-Line Limited a few weeks ago. I'm loving it. I test drove a Tucson first but the infotainment and lack of buttons just didn't sit right with me. I really did like the mustang like tail lights though. Both are great vehicles but the interior of the Kia was a lot nicer I thought. I do wish there was wireless android and apple support though. I just did the update for the navigation system and the bulb radio numbers are gone and a more traditional radio screen is there now, which I like a lot more. I do wish the front door pockets were a little bigger and the cup holders in the rear seat are a little on the small side. There are a few other things that are quirky but nothing I can't live with.

Many thanks for another excellent video. My wife and I have been seriously considering getting a hybrid, focusing on the Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy AWD Turbo, which my wife buys into due to the spacious and comfortable interior. But, because we make long drives (4 to 7 hours on freeway around 70-75 mph), and because we end up going up into the remote hills on some notable dirt & gravel roads to visit one of our daughters who lives "off the grid", we have realized, unfortunately and sadly, that a hybrid engine is not appropriate for our new vehicle. Since I am far from ready for a plug-in or electric-only vehicle, we will now be changing my focus to an all-gas engine.

hahaha hilarious dynamic! Love the video and thank you so much for the insights on both vehicles. I've been chatting with Andrea on instagram since my new 2022 Tucson Hybrid got a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AFTER ONLY 74KMS!!!! It's been in service for 3 weeks now and the technician said the faulty sensor is back ordered and they've had quite a few hybrids come back with this particular issue regarding their knock sensor, my error code was P0326. It appears to be a manufacturing issue. All that being said, once the part is expected to come in next week, i'm still thinking of selling my Hybrid Tucson for the Kia Sportage after your review. I'm going to try to book a test drive shortly.

I was in the same boat. The K5 is such a sweet looking car. All the newer Kia’s have a great design. I loved the interior of the Sportage as it felt more premium. That screen is really nice but I prefer the exterior of the Tucson. Here in the US the Tucson offered more features at a lower trim in comparison to the Sportage. I wanted the hybrid but they were difficult to find so I ended up with the Tucson SEL convenience. Ultimately I like the included maintenance and the Included blue link for 3yrs with radar cruise and power lift gate. Kia only included 1yr of connected service and I would need to go ions trim to get some of the safety features enjoyed in the Tucson

I was interested in the Tuscon until I found the Sportage through reviews on this channel, the interior is way better. I put a hold on a Sportage Hybrid SX prestige which is arriving at the dealer on 5/15 (just got an updated arrive date today). The headlights are interesting, but the more I look at it, the more I think it is pretty cool looking. I called around to many dealers here in the SF Bay Area and they all seem to have a few Sportage hybrids coming in around the same time, but the website does not show this yet. I think they are all SX prestige right now, since the vendors want to maximize their profit working within the chip shortages. Thanks so much for the info on the wireless apple car play issue! I really hope they figure out; it is very disappointing that it is just an argument about licensing, but also that means they could optimistically fix this with a software update later.

Soooo many good options out there in this segment and as Andrea says there is no perfect vehicle. But these are two of the best, thanks for the compro. I recently had a 2021 base Tucson for a 10 day Turo rental car. It was very comfy & got over 33 mpg with 2.5 NA engine (combo freeway & secondary highways, ave speed of 45 mph US) ; it didn't take much time to figure out the controls. I especially loved the steering wheel shape as it offered multiple comfortable grips - I'd love to have that in my cars. Like others I don't care for the red, bumper mounted turn signals. My perfect car would have Sportage exterior & interior except I'd sub a dial or push button gear shifter rather than the traditional style. Last fall, we made an offer on a 22 Tucson Hybrid but I walked when they wouldn't come of the $4K. Mark up. Got a 22 Subaru Outback 2.5 Touring instead. Not as trending as the Koreans, but solid, comfortable transportation with great utility. In 3 yrs I may be back in the market for a Hybrid and the Koreans will definitely be in the running. We also have a 2019 Kia Niro PHEV EX that is averaging 125 eMPG and an excellent local Kia dealer. As Andrea says, there is no perfect vehicle. But if buying today, I'd get the top end Kia Sportage Hybrid as it is better equipped & for the bit more cargo space (ideally w the Tucson steering wheel!).

I owned a Borrego EX, and own a Sportage LX, and a Niro SX, but I just might test drive the Tucson instead of the Sportage next time around, but ultimately I think I would want the Santa Fe 2.5 turbo because of the buttons!

Going with the N-line Tucson 2023 that will come with the full size moon roof, 10.25 infotainment screen and as before an actual shifter. Push button would not be a killer, but do love the actual shifter. (The actual shifter is still electronic like the buttons, just works differently. Not sure if there has been anything but an electronic shift trans (other than manual) in years in any vehicle.)

I am very split about these two cars. On one hand, I prefer the exterior of the Tucson, on the other - I like better the interior of the Sportage. The problem is, in my Country - we only have the shorter European version, which I prefer less.

I was in the same boat.

Tucson's design was much more cohesive in the previous model. KIA's new exterior is my pick, and nicer interior as well. And new cool logo! :)

I have put my name on a list for put 100$ to reserve my Tucson PHEV, which I’m told is 18 months out. I imagine battery technology will have changed by then, so perhaps a little more EV only range will be available. My only concern is that upon doing some research, I’m hearing about a lot of engine issues with the Tucson, and even some that have caught on fire. Have the old issues with the 1.6 turbo been resolved? Should I be worried?

Shopping from USA I am thoroughly in favor of the Sportage. It really comes down to the heated steering wheel being available for under $33k on the Kia where you have to spend $40k in the Hyundai Tucson.

I heard the Tucson PHEV does not get the city/highway EPA figures, when in hybrid mode, gets about the same as the gas only engine on the highway. Likely the same for the Sportage. Still, if most trips are short, this would still save you money on gas. I'd still prefer the more efficient RAV4 Prime, but not its sticker price.

I have ordered a Tucson Ulimate PHEV last October, and it isn't even scheduled to be built until December. Who knows how long you will have to wait for the Sportage? I think that if they were both available today, I would still pick the Tucson. I prefer the interior, and having driven a 2015 Honda CR-V with no buttons, I don't really care about them missing on the Tucson.

Motormouth - What is your take on those “divorced tail lights” on the Hyundai Tucson? I am NOT a fan of those. They are well below your average sight line and won’t even be seen in bumper to bumper traffic. I’m also not a fan of RED turn signals. I wish AMBER turn signals front and rear were mandatory. Not necessarily applicable for these two, but certainly applicable for the larger Palisades and Telluride. As these vehicles age and tail lights die/ go out, you can’t tell if someone is hitting the brakes or the turn signal!

I think you hit on something about Hyundai and Kia that always bothers me: You said they have beautiful designs which change quickly and they don’t have a coherent design aesthetic (I’m kinda summarizing). This leads, in my opinion, to designs that are a bit too trendy and that don’t always age gracefully. I think even the designs of the Tellutide and Palisade are already beginning to age. But then again, I drive a Subaru Outback so clearly I don’t have the best eye for design in the first place.
