Well,.... I can think of one individual who believes everything he does is "perfect", he used to be a president of a large international concern. Rumor has it that he's found himself a bit of trouble with the law lately. But the name doesn't come to mind though. 😄😉😇

I work in oil & gas (i.e. around high pressure flammables), and anyone worth their salt owns up to mistakes in hopes others learn from it and it prevents accidents. It takes a lot more character to publicly admit to a mistake than it does to sweep it under the rug. You never know, somebody watched this and changed their ways which prevented a fire with worse consequnces.

I work with someone who as a young man put what were thought to be safe / cooled ashes in the garbage can stored in the garage. You can guess what happened to his parent’s garage. His humility in sharing that traumatic story was a life blessing to me and deeply seeded the dangers of miscalculating the temperature of wood ash. Like him, you are humble and honest in sharing your story, something that no one can take away in a critical comment.

my dad told something when i was about 14 and had just done something very stupid. The only people who dont make mistakes are those that do nothing. That always stuck with me and my observation over the years is that he was 100%correct. Owning our mistakes is the mark of a solid personality, dont worry about the trolls

This is probably repeat info, but consider having 2 of the smaller buckets so that each load of ashes has longer sit-time outside, and also grab a brick or large rock to put on the lids in case of wind. Fires are scary AF...so glad this one was caught in time to not spread out and grow.

I work for a ready mix company here in West Central Illinois and we make large 2000 pound retaining wall blocks. Generally sell for 35-40 bucks. Have to check around your area but that would be a good way to make a compost bin that would almost be indestructible and last for a very long time.

Evan, close call. Glad it wasnt worse and not by the animal bank barn. Over the winter, weld up a skid for a 250 gallon IBC tote. Set it up with a gas powered pressure washer or high flow water pump for use as a portable fire suppression system that you can move with one of the tractors. Or put it on a trailer and then you could move it with your pickup truck. For the future compost bin, consider a filled cinderblock design. Or weld one up with the drill pipe. If you decide on wood, maybe try to find used heavy equipment pads that are put down for excavators Glad Rebecca caught it in time!

Over 40 years ago I was a garbage man for an alpine ski town. Most of the homes were heated with wood so we encountered wood ash in the garbage pails. Twice our garbage truck started on fire from live coals in the ashes. The procedure was to get as far from buildings dump out the truck and call the fire department. Then we would have to get a loader and dump truck to clean up the mess. Also I do not think you make any more mistakes than anyone else but you are honest about it. Cheers from Canada where it is currently -30F. ~ulrich

Sorry you had to deal with such an unexpected event, Evan. The next day at work must have been tough for both of you. I do see the chickens out scratching in the compost that has been pulled out of the bin. That is exactly what you want to see happening when you make your plans and relocate. Put your chickens to work. They are entertained by the scratching and it's all free organic food! At most, I would build a backer board you can push up against to flip the material. But given the amount of material that you are producing, I believe you have outgrown the board structures. I suggest it's time for either a simple pile or if you want to get fancy, build a windrow over time. With a windrow, you can harvest the old material while you are adding fresh to the "new" end. All you need is a high, well drained location that is relatively flat and out of sight from the driveway. Time to make things simpler for yourself given the amount of work you have to do. And really, there is no way to make a compost pile pretty. And by going simpler - you'll have better compost to spread in the spring. Everybody wins, even the chickens!

Evan, Don’t beat yourself up. Accidents happen. On a side note, I don’t think the ashes were the culprit. Based on the burn patterns on the boards the fire started in the opposite side of the bin and started low. Fire from the ashes would have burned more evenly across the top of the bins.
