Chandran Tharoor was a personal friend of mine and I quite understand the feelings of Shashi. He was in the media world and worked for The Statesman and a good communicator. Above all he was honest and highly principled. I was fortunate to seek his professional services and it was a very successful contribution.

Another beautiful conversation with Mr. Tharoor. Now we know about the word games he played with his father and it's impact on his vocabulary. Could fully relate to insecurities of a youngster when parent has health issues. Glad the last two years changed the relationship between mother and son for the better. Cherish the remaining years with Mother.

deeply, deeply touching, and I completely relate with Shashi. what's irritating is Karan trying to impose his own views and revealing his own Mother complex..it is true, one parent can be a pain in the butt and you are never allowed to say what you truly feel about that parent who;s always diminished you....so it's very aggravating that Karan trying to make shashi as a villain instead of being the incredibly brave man he is for saying what he truly felt. and then Karan is surprised that anyone wants to speak his truth-esp on his show..You Karan punish them for speaking their truth. so Do shut up karan!

Mr. Tharoor, whenever you miss your father, just pinch the back of your left hand with your right-hand thumb and index finger, feel him in you, he has not left anywhere, not even physically. He is also in your children. The people who have left us, their good memories and the times we had cherished with them that part never leaves, it always stays with us. God bless you!

Certainly something one fails to comprehend how a son this successful ever failed to admit the efforts of mum in making him reach where one is till the age of 62 but yet it also speaks volumes about the blunt honesty he himself inherited from his mum #Quite a paradox but Shashi deserves the accolades for being this candid and honest and finally doing away with much of the stuff he thought his mum was!!! Finally wishing Shashi and his mum a long, healthy and happy togetherness forever!

It made me to evaluate my own relationship with my parents. I was more influenced by my mother. My dad never punished me (my siblings were severely punished) not did he freely express his love for us. But when I reached my forties I realised how much he loved us. Even then he was shy to express it freely. Very typical of people of his generation.

I came here expecting some "Incisive" questions relating to the socio-politico-legal apparatus of the state, the burning issues of freeing Hindu temples from the clutches of the Govt., and whether the INC can present itself as a viable opposition to the BJP juggernaut. However, all I see is people waxing eloquent on how affable and honest and fluent the interviewee is, when asked about whether he adored his father or not and their scrabble games! This is precisely the kind of echo chambers that INC has managed to create over the years which have completely isolated them from the ground reality and no wonder, they seem at a loss on how to counter the rise of Far-right in Indian Politics. Disgusting!

Describing certain characteristics of one's parents, which in childhood feels as if they are being too strict to instil discipline and 'imagine' it to being 'wicked', does not mean that they don't love/care for the child and vice versa. In fact in our sunset years, we look back at it in good humour that they meant us well. God Bless them.

Great interview and as candid as it could get. I have great respect for Chandran Tharoor and Aunty… who did entertain me in their GK flat in Delhi during early 90’s. I didn’t know them at all except for a common friend ( who happened to be my boss then) with Palghat/Readers Digest connection!!! Believe me, Uncle and aunty were always there to welcome for a chai and snacks, every time I visited Delhi on work. When Sashi describes his dad and mother, I could correlate my memories of their hospitality, calmness and I totally disagree that aunty is H ( whatever it means) by any stretch of imagination… Yes, I found her more dominating the talk with her towering personality but a true lady of great self esteem and confidence. What a couple!

One can never be quite commensurable with the full range of feelings Mr Tharoor held for his parents. But as a general observation mother hens are less likely to bring up their offspring to well-rounded adulthood than a hard-driving taskmaster mum. Child-rearing embraces all those things like inculcation of discipline, expression of affection, allowing a degree of permissiveness, some moral guidance, etc. But does it matter which of the parent they come from? All these things are in the nurturing part. Then the boffins amongst us never fail to point out also the role of hard wiring to consider when it comes to the development of a child to adulthood irrespective of their parent's role.

1:24 I am a huge fan of Mr Karan Thapar’s felicitous diction and his articulate way of conducting interviews. However, the word ‘euphemism’ seems to have been erroneously used by him as the correct word should have been ‘understatement’ rather than ‘euphemism’ in this context.
