You haven't review some of the best audio products such as paradigm founder and persona speakers. Top of the line speakers of focals, sonus faber, dynaudio, elacs, B&W etc. How can you say swans are the best speakers? And you haven't review some of the best iems like EE Odin, fir m5, UM multiverse mentor, noble audio sultan, elysian annilator etc.

You can't beat the tube sound, imho. I use a pair of gold pin Mullards tubes in my darkvoice 3322 with my favorite phones, Beyerdynaic dt 1990's. I no longer have to look for an improvement in audio gear for my bedroom with this setup. Took me years to find the right combo. If you don't own a tube amp, you're missing out. Thanks, Z, love your reviews.

I agree they are probably new Chinese tubes picked for Apos. My bigger concern is changing anything but the tubes. Changing DAC etc. is too many variables. But thanks for staying up until 6:00AM to make us content! Loveyour dedication!

The rabbit hole of tubes is they all sound good - in adifferent way. I have just gone down the Socket adapter road, my 6922's are now 6SN7. And I'm not giong back - impossible to explain correctly becase it's the same but better (is bigger a thing?). Sorry Mr Z grab a socket adapter and some 6SN7 or 6N8P the russian option, don't blame me or do - because you will love them.

The 12AX7 is a much better sounding tube than the 12AU7 and has more gain, that's why it's always used in the phono section of a tube preamp. $150 for a matched pair of Chinese made tubes is a joke. $100 more will get you a pair of vintage tubes that will blow them away.

Thoughts: If they are tested to spec at the factory, why would they then need to be changed further by burn in? Shouldn't they be the best at the time they meet the spec test? Since tubes don't last forever (not that caps do, but at least much much longer), wouldn't you be getting scientifically worse sound that's not to spec for what they were designed for? Concerns: That fucking mat. jfc man

Interesting, but I'm highly skeptical. Where, precisely, were these tubes manufactured? Were they made in a audiophile-quality lab in the Bay Area where Apos is headquartered...or were they just white-labeled from some dubious factory in China or Russia like all the other new crap tubes made these days which sound like shite compared to vintage RCAs, Telefunkens, etc from the late 1940s to mid 1950s (the heyday of tube construction)? I've rolled plenty of both vintage and new tubes, and there's literally NOTHING made today anywhere (sadly), that comes close to pre-1955 tubes.

Anyone know how the Korg nu-tubes compare to nos? Incidentally I have a pair of soviet nos 6k4p on the way from Ukraine for my hybrids. I tried the chinese ones which were just ok. I have a full tube amp by some obscure british manufacturer with 12au7 in but it's too smooth for my liking. I prefer the punch I get from the hybrids - best of both worlds imo.

The specs of the 12AU7 are the specs of the 12AU7, not the specs of APOS. Otherwise, very bad things would happen. And these are probably Psvane tubes, plus additional QA (hopefully).

The 604 has 6J1’s, so they no fit anyways, I highly recommend if you can find pre 1960’s Sylvania 6AK5’s to pick some up, they’re the spaciest of the bunch I found when I had a 602

LOL. I am still waiting for people to realize that the 12au7 is actually a god awful tube. People use it in their designs because it is a cheap, plentiful, medium mu triode, but if you actually look at the curves on the data sheet, the thing is non linear as all hell.

I have a British tube preamp that used a 12AU7 in the line stage. I had the manufacturer convert it to 12AX7 and the difference was pretty huge. More gain, lower output impedance, and much punchier sound.

made in china matched pair of 12au7's for 150$? it's a joke. get proper nos ge rca mullard brimar amperex all will smoke these but will probably cost a little more. i paid 250$ for a strong used pair of longplate 12au7 mullards from 1957 for my rogue preamp but they are one of the best tubes ever made and sound amazing.

Absolutely nothing wrong with going full vintage but that isn't something everyone is gonna be able to get. If 1000 people want to improve their sound there just isn't enough to go around. So you can't just disregard all modern tubes. The goal being to spec them to SOUND like those vintage tubes you have in your amps. Absolutely no reason it can't be done.

So much BS in the tube marketing world. It's not a "new" manufacturer. These are Chinese tubes made by either Shuguang or PSVANE. I certainly wouldn't pay more than about $25 each, because from that point there are better NOS alternatives.

I can't find who manufactures them, but they are outrageously overpriced regardless at $150 per pair. For about 2/3rd that you can get a matched pair of Genelec Gold Lions, which I would consider premium modern-production tubes.

The so called Gold Lion tubes are made in Russia at the Reflektor plant. They have little in common with original UK made Genalex tubes other than the branding and logo. Just buy NOS, or stick with cheap Chinese, Russian or Czech tubes. Don’t be swayed be fancy branding and marketing.

@@johnratcliffe6438 Not really, although there are a few tiny specialists like Elrog in Germany and Western Electric in the USA who do a good job. One problem is that modern health and safety laws make some of the old materials and methods impossible to do today. This is also why production is mostly done in countries with looser regulations like Russia, China, and the Czech Republic. Unless they are physically broken, tubes do not deteriorate with age. I have heard 100 year old tubes like the Western 205D that were still working perfectly.
