I can relate Jason. I started trad archery about two years ago shooting instinctive only. My progression with practice went very well, then I tried gap shooting. Ugh, what a mistake that was. I did as much research on gap shooting as I could find but it nothing helped. I tried gap for a month with terrible results. I was a mess for a while but I'm back shooting instinctive. I'm having fun again and things seem so much more comfortable and natural. Thanks so much for your videos. I've learned many things from you. Much appreciated!

I want to THANK YOU Jason! this vid motivated me to work on my release(I have a mild pluck) but then I focused on keeping my bow arm straight and BOY my groups not only tightened up but I am consistantly drilling the spot! Thanks again for all you do, also your, vid, R U Good enough, was a huge eye opener and is the reason I'm taking my recurve out this season!

As a new archer this vid has been a great eye opener. I’m just starting off and so I’m working through different techniques to see what works best with me but though all that I just think too much on my form and forget to lock onto to the target. I will now try what I’ve learned in this vid and hopefully it’ll improve my archery.

I’m 100% with you Jason. Recently I tried a bunch of different shooting styles. Some gave me confidence but, killed my shoulder, some were horrible. I’ve since gone back to my “normal“ draw weight 60# and back to my original style and can’t be happier. Great video

Glad you enjoyed it. Gap is fantastic for many. For me it just diverts my attention. I need all my focus on the spot. Happy to hear you are shooting well! Shooting an arrow is an addiction. I went hog hunting today and brought my 4570 rifle just to change it up. I missed stump shooting my way back to the truck. Love shooting my bow any chance I can.

Just watched this video and you're an amazing archer and an amazing teacher! I did notice that when you shot "for real" your elbow moved backwards on release, indicating imho that you pull through perfectly. You just do it without any flair or fancy stuff! So keep doing you and forget about the people thinking they know better than you. Your results speaks clearly what is working for you. 👍

Nice to hear someone keeping it simple. I started shooting recurve 50 years ago. Long before all these techniques, styles, etc were a thing. I still shoot game with the same Bear recurve. No frills. Great video!

I find that an internal smile of confidence helps accuracy. I deploy it moment before the shot. I also find follow through distorts my accuracy and just release and hold hand position. I find left hand grip and nock height to be very important for accuracy. Also, keeping arrows clean, numbering them and taking note of the best performance arrows. I pulled my three best and put broadheads on for Turkey season. My limit is 15 yards. I feel confident at 10-13. Solid groups of 1.5" or less and the occasional flyer.

I have tried it all and gap shooting screws you up so bad I wish I never did it I almost quit shooting because of it now I have worked on my straight arm and now I burn a hole in the target your videos are hands down the best it’s straight up no bull 💩 and I can’t wait till hunting season here in Pennsylvania great stuff brother

I started six months ago. My right arm is much bigger than my left arm now. My tendons under and above my lower arm look like cables. I did not expect that. I wish it was symmetrical. Got laid up by back and fore arm pain really bad earlier on. I'm now using a 1968 56" grizzly that I bought from an 84 year old I know for 150.00. It's a 50# bow. The orange bag had a quarter inch of cement colored dust on it. When I pulled the bow out of the bag, it spoke to me. It looks brand new. I started with a 45#' Sanlida which is a pretty good set up for the money. I could barely pull it back halfway for over a month. Now it feels like nothing to pull the Sanlida.

I have experienced every thing you discussed in this video. And you are 100% correct. Is my back tension right, is my bow arm bent right am I pulling through the shot. Well I had to stop listening to all the BS in my head, and just do what feels right and shoot. Thanks for sharing this. All new and old shooters should watch this. Like Howard Hill said, ask yourself are you a target archer or a hunter. Its hard to be both at the same time for some people, so choose. I chose to be a hunter. Thanks and God bless

I had the same issue only with a shotgun and duck hunting. I was very good and then I read all these articles on leading the bird etc. Screwed me up for years. A lot better now. Your brain works way better than you think and will figure it out with whatever you do. I guarantee it!

Great video, just an all around great video. One thing I will add, I started off shooting lighter bows at the beginning of my journey, as you often hear start light to learn. I learned on a 45 pound longbow, well, once I felt dailed in a year or so later I started hunting and shooting only mid 50s... I never went back to the lighter bow because I thought it would be back tracking... Recently I went to the light bow with a more serious nature, realized I am much, much more accurate with lighter bow AFTER learning how to get off the string clean.... I'm a few weeks into shooting my little 45 and I may just stick with it, and not move up again...heavy high foc slim micro arrows we have now, no reason to shoot higher weight IF you don't wanna but also want to kill.

Great video and thanks for your honesty. It's interesting to know that even super experienced archers like you still struggle with things from time to time. We're all just human, eh. This is my 3rd year of trad archery and my first season hunting and I'm still figuring out what is best for me under different real-world conditions. I agree that going with what your body feels natural is the best way. If it was easy, it wouldn't be nearly as rewarding when it all comes together.

Spot on Jason, I have the exact same release if I try any other method I spray arrows and ingrain a fault in my form. Think about it,the jump shot in basket ball, the golf swing, there are certain basics you must perform but you do it in a way that your body is comfortable.

Have improved 100 percent since your cold shot video. Work midnights. Get out of truck grab bow in garadge shoot one shot. Live with it . Practice in evening. 3 under point on and just shoot. Solid anchor fletch touches nose done. Yes dump the B.S. GREAT Information today.

Your 100% correct. I pretty much fixed it by following the arrow to the spot, don't move anything, focus on spot, follow arrow to spot.

Amen! This is exactly me . Used to gap an string walk an do the proper form otherwise I’m going to destroy my shoulder an let the target go an all the mental stuff. An it deadset done my head in. After seeing the old John shulz video an giving it a try it blew my mind. Every archery coach or guru said that’s a terrible way to shoot ,but I’ve never smashed so many arrows from tight grouping . So why do they keep pushing people down the best method or whatever it’s called path?

I'm the same way. When I take a shot everything is in autopilot. All I do is focus on a spot and repetition and practice all comes naturally. When you start going through a checklist at full draw thinking about form and release....you have confidence problems and boy does that suck. I had it a few years ago from the same thing. Tinkering with my form based on what I was hearing on KZfaq. I was shooting 6 inches left no matter what I did. I had to stop shooting for a few months to forget about the bad habits I had incorporated and had become automatic. Luckily I overcame it. But I feel you, nothing sucks more than not being totally confident in your shooting.

You just did a video about what I was thinking a lot lately. 1. The release and 2. that my arrow or arrowhead moves a little bit forward before I release it. (but I only see this if I record myself) I changed my anchor recently and watched a lot of other archers and traditional WA archers stuff etc. and saw a lot of things I didn't do or that my technique wasn't quite as perfect as compared to some french archer that I watched on YT. But it is just like you said - if I don't concentrate too much on what I do or not do and just focus on the target and shoot, it works pretty well.

Yep my relesase does the same thing. creeps forward at the shot. but when I do that i hit stuff. when I try to not do that I loose focus and screw up.

@@SamkoTradBow Exactly. Only a little bit, but it does. But as you are saying, if I don't focus on that or try to have that pull-trough release the hits are still there and working. Quite interesting though. So there is no real "right" or "wrong", at least if you are comfortable with the shooting and the hits, we probably should keep it this way. Good to know that I'm not alone with that haha. Thank you anyway, shoot straight.

This helped and made a big difference for me. Thanks. I hunt from the ground in tight cover with a 56” grizzly bear recurve. Short bow for tight spots so release stability for accuracy so important.

I go through the same thing! I am constantly working on the release. I don't get the " just relax your fingers " I try but truthfully I just try to forget that and just concentrate on the spot.

That's good shooting!!!! Back to the basics that works for you!! I have to tell myself" shoot my Trad bow like a compound". Arm solid to the target, solid anchor and small amount push pull and let the shot break naturally... Keep that bow arm solid to the target don't let it move off target before and after the shot.. thanks for sharing

Javelina is an amazing hunt. I did it 6 years in a row out of Marfa TX. Hunted with outfitter Wayne wemers. He no longer does it but there were othe ranches in the area. I would check it out. Was affordable and incredible

Spot on! The new thing is people trying to make it more complicated then it is, look at target and shoot the bow. If you want to treat it like a compound with all this gap shooting walking the string go back to compound. The whole reason you do traditional is for the simplicity of it, not to where ur useing yardage again. Shoot ur trad bow enough and it's just a matter of look, pick a hair and release. Never understood why people do all those steps.

The worst thing I did was watch the popular channel that “pushes” three under, fixed crawl, gap shooting. Totally killed my shooting to the point I didn’t hunt with my longbow for 2 years. A couple of weeks ago finally went back to split finger, no clicker, just focusing on the spot and letting my brain do the rest.

I learned to finger shoot anchoring under my chin. May not work for everyone but I get a real clean release because my thumb rests on my lower jaw.

Yep the old target style release. dont see it much these days but it sure is a fantastic way to shoot a bow and if it works great for you then it is great for you.

Damn Bro, hit the nail on the head! I agree, shoot what's comfortable for you. There is NO right or wrong way if you're hitting the target. Been shooting trad my whole life, didn't make the change when wheel bows came out. I figured, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Not knocking anything, if it works.

Exactly. Each shooter has to FIND what works best for them and then let the bow eat. pick a spot and the mind and body can work out the math while the shooter focuses on focusing.

I do both, there’s no question in my mind that at close range, before your arrow starts dropping rapidly, instinctive shooting allows you to get off a MUCH quicker shot which can make the difference between success and failure, however ,just for me, if I have the time I find aiming to be more accurate especially at longer distances

Dropping my bow arm and hitting left (right handed shooter) is something I have to fight. It affects my point of impact most with my ASL as it’s less forgiving of such things compared to my recurves (shelf cut closer to center on my recurve).

I used to do that alot too as I would peak to see where the arrow hits or how it flies. I have a podcast coming out and more vides on how I am isolating aspects of my shooting for "form" work that doesnt affect my real shooting sessions. its been working amazing.

3 under screwed me up for a long time this past year. I have shot on and off for 20 years and shot instinctively until last year. My range and groups improved. But for some reason 3 under amplified my target panic

turners shot IQ He explains how we anticipate recoil. He is primarily dealing with sights and while we instinctive archers don't have them, all of the rest of his system is great for quiting all of the distraction in your head.

I’ve been shootn traditional for 31 years. Everyone has their own style of shooting. I got listening to a lot of videos trying to get better and realized I got worse. I went back to what works for me.

Great video my friend... I agree with you. I am a hunter, I do shoot gap, but I have that arrow way up and I am basically looking right down that shaft. My point on is like 12 yards, which is perfect for hunting. Arrow drops really quick is the only downfall, 10 inches at 20 yards. 20 yards would be my max shooting at deer and thats an aim at the top of the back shot. But for me it is what I switched to and I dont even think about my anchor anymore, its all about the same sight picture... but man, it is extremely accurate at close range. Im not sure why more hunters dont do this?? Thanks, Steve

I shoot just like you with recurve. I release quicker though. I know when I release it was a good or bad shot before it gets anywhere near the target. Edit: not as good YET.

When i first started i had a hard time picking a spot so i was shooting 6 inch circles at 20 and now with my horrible form i can get about 3 inch groups at 35 but i never shoot past 25 on game as for gap i was lucky to get 6 inches at 15 yards haha definitely not my thing but as always i always find your videos both enjoyable and helpful.

i think gap is still the best method for many shooters. but for me it was a huge mistake to even try. wont make that mistake again.

I have always done the same thing with the hand and I am shooting the Split Vison/Instinctive Gap that is the Howard Hill method. I need to use the target/spot and arrow with the gap guess. I have had to do this ever since a kid and took a city summer rec archery program, found out I was hooking the string before release, this was worse then Plucking it was hooking the string so I would continue to draw while doing some type of slow releasing, meaning I did not know when the string was going leave my hands past anchor, a very dangerous unsafe thing to do as the arrow or feathers would hit my face as I let go due to the arrow not releasing right. This was when they tried to get me in a Summer Rec Class to shoot the draw though style I had never done before. I have tried this drawback style release again when getting back into the sport/eventual hunting in 2021 and nope was a no go, I am worse now with a release issue/target panic thing that prevents me from doing the drawback style of release.

Man, I walked into my local archery shop and tried out a recurve when they asked if I wanted some advice. I shoot similarly to what you've said in the video, I just look, and my body has figured out the rest. I snap shot a very decent grouping and they proceeded to essentially instruct me to shoot target recurve style because it's "better". I just don't care for it and freestyle traditional is something that works for me. I feel like modern precision target archery has somehow become the gold standard for all archery and its rules are imposed onto primitive, traditional, and hunting disciplines. Do primitive or ancient military archers and fletchers care as much as we do about matching arrow spines to each individual bow? Can you imagine target rifle shooters telling self-defence, military, hunting, or re-enactment shooters how to do things? They'll be laughed at and told to stay in their lane. Some archers with this mentality need to check themselves before thinking their way's the only way.

Hello Jason, could you do a video on cross dominance shooting? Im having issues deciding wether to change from right to lefty because of a cross dominance between my draw hand and dominant eye. Whats your opinion as a hunter and instictive shooter on cross dominant shooters? Love the wisdom you pour in the channel

I was in that position. I'm left handed and left eye Dom. But always shot a compound right handed. When I got into trad I switched to left hand to match my dominant eye. Best decision I could of made. I can shoot both right and left handed but let is so mich better with my Dom eye

What I’ve noticed about Trad Archery it’s almost just like golf. Folks for get the goal, ball in the hole or arrows on target. When you start playing swing or shoot form bad things happen. When you practice practice when you playing or shooting to hit the target shoot at the target.

Right on Brother I've been shooting traditional archery since 1963 I'm 68 years old still shooting traditional archery I don't even shoot what they say on the right spine arrow I shoot ceder arrows sometimes light sometimes heavy always hitting my Mark I've been shooting so long I know my bows and my arrows Howard Hill in one of his shooting demo's shot spine arrows fron 45 to 80 pound all out of 70 pound long bow hitting his mark at 40 yards perfect group's enough said about all b.s on arrow spine in all your shooting technique is how I've been shooting All my life regardless what the so called experts say keep it simple enjoy this God given blessing on instinctive traditional archery great job God bless

That’s funny you say this because I’m doing the same thing right now. I’m wondering if it’s my arrow or my poundage is to heavy and then I have to remember it has to be heavy I’m a hunter not a target shooter. It’s only 70 so it’s not that heavy. I’m trying to pull through. Bending bow arm straight arm. Blah blah blah. And I think I just need to practice and pick a spot

Yep when you are shooting to hit a target just focus on the target. when you are shooting to work on form like a release just use a bag target at 3 feet and shoot with your eyes closed focusing only on the release. the focus is what matters.

That’s your style Jason, stick with it! Our sport is like a lot of others sometimes we just go through things whether they are mechanical or mental. Pitchers get in slumps, basketball players slump, it’s human nature. I’ve sure had my bad days and weeks hunting with a recurve over the past 33 years. My biggest issue is drawing on deer, I want to slow everything down so they can’t bust me and that throws my rhythm off. So I practice drawing real slow. I think Howard Hill kept his release hand on his face? Thanks for the vid. Pick a spot, don’t let the bow work you push towards the target, release , keep the bow arm there which is following through and it’s gonna go to the spot😊

OMG, these things, ALL these things, are my “mystery” shot causers! That is exactly what happens to me, all at once at times. I am a 3 under “point on target” Aimee and can do pretty well. It’s just sometimes I do the dump, plucky thing and sends an arrow in the woods or into my backdrop. It all stems from a “not now signal” from my pea brain then I pluck it cause I know I have to release. What I feel works is a controlled let down and a restart, but I am rarely smart enough to actually do it.. love your stuff my man and you are a sweet shooter! Pretty good shooting, that’s some awesome shooting and a goal of mine!

Question:,Can you recommend a traditional bow or perhaps a price range that I should pay for a decent bow? Use to be traditional hunter decades ago and miss it very much. Would love to see vid on equipment recommendations,cost etc. I attend the PA bow hunter festival yearly and there are many traditional bows for sale but I don’t know what to look for. Can you help?

Lots of great bows out there in all price ranges. The 150 dollar range has many of the China and Asia bows like the samick sage and black hunter. Up from there you have some of the bears and Martin bows and they are excellent. Then you get into used custom bows for about half to 3/4 the price of new custom bows. Best thing to do is attend those shoots and try some of the bows and find one that you like and can afford. It's hard to find a bad bow today. They are all excellent

You use a 26" draw...please recommend a bow that is reasonably quick and forgiving

You don't get both. Really quick and forgiving is like asking for light weight and strong. Can't have both. Fortunately quick is irrelevant speed means nothing in a bow. Forgiving means everything. A bow style is a very personal choice. In my opinion the most forgiving bow is a straight limb longbow like those made by northernmistlongbows.com. but that type of bow is not for everyone. Best thing you can do is attend a shoot in your area where you can try different bows. Recurves are a good happy medium with speed and shoot ability and any recurve today is a good bow. Samick sage, bear kodiak, black hunter from Amazon, etc.

I still the good thing about this, is the fact that you were open minded enough to at least try something different and work on form and release, even if you went back to the original way your still ahead knowledge and learned something. Which to me is a gods thing.

Thanks. the difference for me was noticable instantly on both sides of the messing around. I was happy with my shooting before I started messing around, hated it during the messing around process of trying new stuff. and then loved my shooting again when I said forget it all and went back to just picking a spot.

@@SamkoTradBow I don't know where they get this "pull your hand back to your ear" stuff from. How do you anchor your shot against your face then? Once you let it go it's over. I don't know how everybody else does it but I'm only thinking about three things when I shoot. I know that if I'm gripping the bow, I'm going to miss. If I don't have my release hand pressed against my face, I'm going to miss. And if I don't know exactly what I'm trying to hit, I'm going to miss. Anything more complicated than that is just too much.

I noticed you tilt your bow to one side. If I’m shooting a compound bow can I tilt it or is that a trad bow technique only? Also, what poundage are you shooting? Thx

Because a longbow has the arrow sitting right on top of my hand turning or canting my bow doesn't effect anything. With a compound your arrow is farther away from your hand Because of the arrow rest and the fact that you are using sights, canting the bow would cause the arrows to impact at a different spot

Sometimes you just need to walk away and regroup. That’s my issue most the time. When I’m not thinking about it too much I do my best because that’s what instinctive is all about. I haven’t tried that gap stuff yet seems like too much work and brain thought for shooting arrows but to each their own and whatever works.

after the olympic recurve, i learmed to shoot with a longbow some principles remains the same : your bow arm does not move, it gives the direction and the strength of the arrow if you look the videos of our french former world 3D champion Romain Gardeur, you have the same technical preparation nothing more to say, just look at your example, BRAVO !
