I am restoring an old Biedermeier chest of drawers from 1847. There were many individual parts that had to be glued back together. Veneer had to be reglued and replaced. A key was not available and a blank was refitted. As a finishing touch, the old layer of lacquer was removed and replaced with a shellac polish (French polish).

Danke wiedermal.

Your process of making keys is fascinating. I buy every old key i find, and they are not expensive, i have maybe 50. Usually, i have one that fits. But, if i cant get one made, i have to give the precious key away when i sell the piece of furniture. It will be better for me to follow your example and learn to make keys from blanks.

Hey Chrigun! First of all thank you for the Video. Your desire to Save this Kind of furniture instead of just painting it is very important to Save These beauties. Additionaly using the polishing with Shellac is an ode to the masters. Dont take it personal,but there was two times where i almost Had a Heart attack. You sanded the freshly stripped drawers at a low grit just to use the scrape/plane on it. It removes so much of the Patina and of the natural differences. Second, of you dont have matching veneer, get it, ask other restorers, im sure people you know got. you covered. Because on Long Term Most patches Fall out of Place When it comes to matching the Rest.overall i love your Videos, but These two things hurt regarding Taking off so much of the thickness with every restoration. Dein Trapez passt besser. 😄

Wonderful restoration! Thank you for your videos. I would suggest that, in the future, you might crowd source matching veneer. Here in the US, I frequently see furniture on the curb, usually beyond the owner's ability to restore. Many times, lovely veneers go wasted. I would hunt around on furniture pickup day to salvage veneer scraps for you for free! Of course, you may have time constraints that make this idea impractical. I also have a question. I see you and other restorers strip furniture, **then** make repairs with glue, epoxy, filler, etc. That seems counter-intuitive: you get those repair chemicals on the bare wood, which can impair the stain & finish process. So for instance, a bit of resin glue can soak into the wood and cause a spot that never takes stain. Looking to understand the method. Thanks in advance.
@chrigunrestauration

Hello. This is a good suggestion but unfortunately not always feasible. Some veneers are no longer available. Others are difficult to obtain. There aren't many companies that sell veneer. You always have to check whether you get the right one or the one that is closest to it. The next problem is that the veneer is usually only available in large quantities. Usually there are 20-30 sheets. They have to be paid. Often the right veneer is not included. It's always a trade-off. I reuse old veneers for other projects and always check to see if I can get remaining stock somewhere. But even that is no guarantee that the right veneer is included. For stripping. I don't like doing it very much. I only do it when I have no other option to remove the old surface. These are usually synthetic paints that unfortunately cannot be removed any other way. In order for new surfaces to hold properly, all traces of the paint stripper must be removed. This means the parts must be washed thoroughly. It takes a lot of work to remove the remains. That's why I don't like doing it. But then it is possible to redesign the surface. But the point is, no rose without thorns. I hope I was able to answer your question. Greetings, Chris

I still marvel at veneer in previous centuries! It must have been time consuming and expensive to make it and sell and use it then, without industrial manufacturing. A rich, niche, luxury item, as opposed to now, a cheap cover over plywood or MDF! 😼

@ande100 😀 kein Problem. Ja. Es ist eine Spätbiedermeier Kommode. Die Biedermeierzeit ging von 1815-1848.

@@chrigunrestauration Toll, danke.

If you can't reasonably match veneer you should replace it.

I have to agree with @timhull8664 I also enjoy your videos but this one was a bit grating, IF that was a valuable antique. It is better to source the correct key blank or make one to fit, rather than altering the lock. The replacement veneer was wrong wood and the grain was a poor match. I’m guessing that production schedule meant that there wasn’t time to order the correct veneer. Again and only if this was a valuable antique, then removing the surface aging can significantly devalue a piece. If you start with a hot damp cloth and just clean the surfaces, then you can make an assessment to what minimal refinishing is absolutely necessary. It is better to consult a professional antique restorer if a piece is historically significant. That is intended as constructive criticism which is how we all learn and improve.

You did a great job on the woodwork but as a professional locksmith, I'd suggest you leave making keys to someone who knows what they are doing rather than mutilate the lock.
