"I Am Sam" is the compelling story of Sam Dawson (Sean Penn), a mentally-challenged father raising his daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) with the help of a unique group of friends. @@jamesjross we watch dramas to feel things, that's what the creators and actors are trying to do. And the fact that they can is a testament to the skill of their craft. Obviously it isn't real. But it mimics real life themes and common struggles like love and questioning one's own abilities (or lack thereof) or getting picked on for being different or neurodivergent. So the emotional response we get from that is very real. If you accidentally get stuck with a pin and bleed it's real, but when you get stuck with a strong emotional trigger and cry tears... that pain or anger is less real?

Sean Penn deserved an Oscar for this movie. I have a at least four disabilities. Autism Disorder, Minor Intellectual Disability, ADHD and anxiety. I can have a lot of meltdowns though Sean Penn played this roll incredibly amazing. I love this movie so much.

I hate this because no parent knows what it takes to be a parent. No book, no classes can teach you. You learn as you go. There are things that he could not give her but he gave her the most important gift. He gave her love and compassion. He gave her a stable home. Endless friends who are all so different. Being a good parent doesn’t always means being “normal”. Sometimes it’s sharing the love and kindness in your heart with someone. Loving them unconditionally and doing the best by them. Sam always did the best by Lucy, he thought of her first. It’s hard to ask any parent to give up their kid for what people perceive as better. So imagine someone who does not understand why they cannot see that he loves and does what is best for his daughter.

I got my dad to watch this with me. He was a single father on the spectrum with ptsd, it hit him similarly. I think that when you have a dependent you love them so much that you'd give them everything yet bc of that it makes you doubt that you're enough. I bet you were more than enough for your kid. Unconditional love and constant effort is all a kid wants.

I’m only physically disabled and we have to deal with this discrimination from our own family. My own sister won’t let me babysit my niece because she thinks I can’t keep up with her. 🙄 horrible what disabled people have to go through.

This scene messes me up cause a disabled pops knows more than my own damn “normal” pops about being a good parent. Constancy, patience, listening, pretending to listen even when you can’t, love, admitting imperfections. All stuff many normal dads don’t do. Even if he doesn’t know how to always handle Lucy, he tries his best over and over again. That’s what matters and why Lucy always loved him back no matter what.

This movie is sad but it’s special to me. I’ve always wanted to kinda be a counselor for autistic people . My best friends sister is special needs so is her mom , they listen to me nobody else, when I’m at her house and her sister needs to do something and her grandparents are trying to get her to do it she won’t listen to them. I talk to her and she listens . This movie brings me into tears but I love it and is very special. Guys please understand special needs people aren’t “stupid , dumb, or idiotic” they’re just different but they bleed the same as us. They see things different and sometimes you need to see they’re point of view or perspective it might seem hard but just take a few minutes out of your life to understand them. I promise if you just listen to them your might seem their point of view.

So I remember sitting in my moms car on a late night drive over hearing my parents talking about a movie. Weeks prior to this they kept telling me I was aloud to see it, but when I asked them the name of the movie they told me that I couldn’t watch it because of some type of random bullshit. I remember desperately looking for this movie when I was like 11 years old and only finding this now.. I don’t know exactly why I’m saying this to a bunch of random people on the internet, but to me it’s almost like I’ve randomly stumbled upon a thing that I was looking for like 4-6 years ago *it’s like I was meant to find it*

My eyes well up with tears every time I see this scene; it is so heartbreakingly moving, Sean penn is phenomenal in this movie he really makes you feel for the character and Sam is such a wonderful father I so badly wanted to punch the lawyer for pressing him to the point he cried, Michelle Pfeiffer was awesome in this as well!💯😁😉😘👍
