Who said girls can't play the drums? Veteran drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, accompanied by four emerging musicians, highlights her life and performs a musical improvisation in conjunction with an original poem, “I Am the Drums," which alludes to the drums as a metaphor for a more balanced, more harmonious way of living. She asks us to consider the possibility of an inner drummer in everyone.
Mao Sone - trumpet, Andrew Marzotto - guitar, Mats Sandahl - bass, Negah Santos - percussion
Terri Lyne Carrington is a 3-time Grammy Award winning jazz drummer and producer. She received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music at age 11, and later became the youngest person to receive an honorary doctorate from the college as well. She has performed with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, Stan Getz, Lalah Hathaway, Dianne Reeves and more; she is currently Zildjian Chair in Performance at Berklee College of Music's Global Jazz Institute.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I'd say that Terri and Anika are about equal, but in different spheres of music
@paradidd
@paradidd 7 жыл бұрын
If it's the Anika I think you mean, she's great but If you took 15 different bands of different styles and had each play 3 tunes with each band, you'd see a big difference in Terri's vast experience and versatility that would be considerably higher than Anika's. If you're talking about just chops on the drum set or drum pad, they would (to most ears) more like they are on the same level. These days with all the athletic video drumming going on, people a lot of folks think that's a parallel in talent to someone playing music with other musicians, listening, reacting, knowing what not to play etc. I know Anik has played in bands and she is great, but the level Terri has many more dimensions to it and years.

Your favorite drummer does not make her the best. Gergo Borlai is also great. So is Senri Kawaguchi. Billy Cobham. Neil Peart. And a great many others. I love Terri Lyne Carrington's drumming too. They are all 'top rate.' My personal favorite was Buddy Rich. Take care! :)

People who think that this is just jive, just do not get it. Terri Lyne can play anything on the drums. She is so well trained technically, and has worked with some of the greatest stars. Some people play sloppy stuff to hide behind the fact that they really can't play. I am a drumming instructor. She is absolutely brilliant! She can play the most technically perfect, clean, crisp solo if she wants to. Terri Lyne is playing MUSICALLY here... thoughtful expressiveness. She is a phenomenal artist.

As a drummer/musician...It's a mystery to me how anyone would find this to be "noise" in the manner I suspect it is being used here. The "self-praise" comment is so far from the truth. To make such a comment just seems envious and mean-spirited. Terri is an amazing drummer/musician..PERIOD!!!!

@Jimmie16 6 жыл бұрын
You can't train ears to like a sound you either do or you don't like a sound format. You can appreciate the technic but not the sound. BTW I hate this kind of jazz it's just a discordant racket to me and I've been listening to and playing music for over 65 years and it still sucks.
@BradfordGuy
@BradfordGuy 6 жыл бұрын
This kind of Jazz takes a trained ear and an elevated sense of rhythm to really appreciate it. I have been playing music since I was in grammar school and I still cannot listen to this type of Jazz; it is just too hard to follow. I think this genre is really for the true geeks of music; maybe a tad eccentric - they are on a completely different plane of musicallity!

@@Jimmie16 Agreed. I've been playing and following music for decades and I played in a swing/jazz band for a few of those and loved every minute of it. But I still never understood or appreciated this kind of mess. She may be super talented but unfortunately it would be hard to discern listening to this.
